Part 1 of a 3 part video. Introduction to carbide tools, and spindle turning.
This is one long video, broken up into three parts. I go through many basic cuts and operations of woodturning and demonstrate how to do them with carbide tools.
I confess I’m not an expert at everything shown here - my beads could use some work, that’s for sure! But in the end, I get it done, I think.
Part 1: • Part 1 of 3 - Woodturn...
Part 2: • Part 2 of 3 - Woodturn...
Part 3: • Part 3 of 3 - Woodturn...
Here are the makers of the carbide tools I use:
Harrison Specialties: www.harrisonspecialties.com/we... (I have the Simple Rougher, Simple Turner and Hollower, the Simple Shear Cutting Finisher, and the Simple 55* Detailer. I also have one tool handle from this site.)
Mike Hunter: www.hunterwoodturningtool.com/ (I have the Hunter Osprey tool)
Glenn Teagle (UK): www.ukwoodcraftandcarbidechise... (I have the hexagon bar hollowing chisel, with a homemade handle)
Easy Wood tools: www.easywoodtools.com/ (I have the Easy Detailer)
Check out Eddie Castelin on KZbin. Also visit his site to buy carbide cutters - he has many popular sizes. Just measure the ones you have, see if he has one that will fit.

I just received my Harrison Specialties tools last week, and am already making it look like I almost know what I'm doing. Members of my club look down their noses at carbides and swear you will never make a project with carbides that can rival a good gouge. My mission is to prove them wrong. Thank you for a very informative video.

I have watched this series several times over the last two years. I have Harrison's square, round and pointed cutters. The square and round I use frequently. Not long ago I bought a 6mm Osprey. Still learning how to use that. I have used this series to refresh my memory on different techniques. Great series.

Nothing like a good old 1inch skew and a big broad gouge

Can the carbide rougher do the job of a large traditional roughing gouge? Say you are turning a large 10" diameter log with bark on it

I finally tried some carbide tools and I really dont enjoy them, especially for roughing out. Having the corners coming down feels like its beating on the tool vs just peeling with a skew.

Thanks for the info. The tool does not attach to your magnet because it is a high grade stainless steel, not aluminum.

Thanks. Question: What are the suggested speeds of the Lathe for different projects? Thanks again

Can I use diamond shaped carbide inserts using a bit holder in a CNC wood lathe machine? Are the Carbide bits same for wood and iron lathe?Cheers

Great video...You mentioned that the one round carbide cutter would give you "the catch of your life" if you plunge straight in. I can tell you that this 100% correct because that is what happened to me. What round carbide cutter should I buy for hollowing? I don't want to use the other one anymore.

For hollowing, I just use a flat round carbide cutter. It is far more forgiving than the smaller, cupped cutters. In my video description, you can find the link to Harrison Specialties, where I bought my simple turner and hollower.

I I agree. I was horrified, even if the spindle was pretty smooth by then.

I am not sure if it is camera angles, or not but your distance on the tool rest seems to be a bit more than I can get away with using old fashioned high speed steel. Do you find that the carbide tool work with a constant larger gap? (High speed indicated how fast this gets dull, NOT that you will effortlessly go "fast" thru the wood)

When the wood is spinning on the lathe there is a strong "beating" motion of the shadow and light on the wood. (say around 13 minutes). Is that to do with flickering flourescent lighting, or what is creating that artifact in the video?
@SJWoodworks
@SJWoodworks 5 жыл бұрын
Looks like just a video artifact, probably related to the frame rate of the video related to the spinning of the piece. I don't really know.

Easy Wood Tools bar is stainless steel... not aluminum, which is why a magnet won't hold it. Aluminum would not hold up, it would be terrible.
