I have finally learned something about a technique that was beyond my skill level. Thanks for the lesson.

Trim your video or add more turning..seem you talked to much filling time at end. Good points, clear sound, film. East to follow along.

I use a Zebra Z grip pen to make turned pens' Anybody else doing this?

I just start between centers and then proceed pretty much as you did here. I don’t think I’d be comfortable jamming onto the face of the jaws - but hey, everyone has their own way of doing things and they all pretty much work.

Yeah, in wanting to turn my first bowl I watched several videos and not one of them turned one the same way...or even attached a head the same way...Faceplate, chuck screw, live center...one guy even super glued a piece of wood to the bowl then attached the faceplate to that. And of course every one of them didn't mention a thing about making the curve inside or out, but they sure did love to talk about their super mojo-doolawa super expensive chisels when I'm here with a Central Machinery mini lathe and chisel sets I got from Amazon wondering why none of them will show me how to make a basic bowl with tools everyone can afford. Finally I stopped watching the videos, deciding the only way I'm going to learn anything is by just diving in and doing it. If something breaks then it breaks and I'll know not to do that again.

Can the carbide rougher do the job of a large traditional roughing gouge? Say you are turning a large 10" diameter log with bark on it
@Sam-tg4ii Жыл бұрын
I have this carbide set. It's good quality and made in US. But I still feel a bit scared using it to rough gouge something big like this, especially with bark. I keep thinking the carbide tip is going to catch,break, and fly off into my face. Not sure how grounded this fear is but I like that a traditional roughing gouge is just once piece.

I have watched several videos tonight about off-center bowls, they were all good but this method was the simplest and easiest to understand, thank you. I have an old piece of very dark walnut that was passed down to me from a father to a son then to me., and I've had it for over 20 years. I think this will do it justice.

Saw your video for the first time today and I read all the comments too. Impressed with the Cocobolo pen but not once did you or your readers mention that Cocobolo is poisonous! It's dust is a severe irritant so always wear a good mask and safety glasses too. Keep up the good work!

I've been turning since I was 12 now at 70 still at and I just bought a set of carbide's just to see what all the hype was about ! Guess what I hate them anyone interested in buying a set of carbide chisels!!! I'll take the old school chisels any day and do circles around carbide turning they SUCK!!! In this video he's removed the center which first which is bad one should remove outside to the center as the walls of the bowl get week and vibrate with no center support!!!🤔 Give me a bowl gouge 5/8"and a 1/2" and half the time the bowl will be finished and hardly no sanding! Also try doing live edge with carbide! Not here to knock this video down but lean old school first and you will see were I'm coming from! Thank you to my grandfather who taught me how turn!!!👍

Well, I'm way behind an 8 year old video. Don't know if you're still monitoring this site but I tried the website to place an order and it said you're shut down, email was returned as unable to deliver. Phone message said you were recovering and that number was out going only and don't leave a message, which I did at the beep anyhow. I'd like to place an order but can't seem to accomplish that . Any help would be appreciated Get well

There are a lot of carbide woodturning tools on the market. I think the ones I use are sold at simplewoodturningtools.com right now. But there are others out there too, and I'm sure they have evolved and improved in the years since I made this video!

Do you have carbide hollowing vidioes?
@taiwanluthiers2 жыл бұрын
You're basically dealing with rotting wood... I think it needs to be epoxy treated somehow at various stage of work... perhaps once the outside bowl shape is done put it in a huge vat of epoxy and suck the air out with a vacuum pot.

I finally tried some carbide tools and I really dont enjoy them, especially for roughing out. Having the corners coming down feels like its beating on the tool vs just peeling with a skew.

I’m looking at buying some carbide tools so was also having a gander at uTube for information. While yours is a good instructional video ,please,please,please get rid of that bloody annoying too loud music, I had to keep a finger on the volume button to turn it down then up again to hear you. I am sure viewers would rather hear lathe/ wood turning sounds than that awful noise. Sorry no thumb up.
