Here's another update on this: I received another email from ThinkGeek who stated to perform a factory reset. They offered these steps: (Some of us already tried this, it doesnt appear to work even with the additional fact that the flashlight button needs to be held until a message appears. It never did for me.) 1: Please turn your Pip Boy Unit off 2: Charge the unit for a full 8 hours. 3: Turn the feature select knob to DATA, then hold the flashlight button down. Turn the unit on 4: Continue to hold the flashlight button down (past the boot-up vaultboy) until you see a factory reset message on the bottom of the screen. Even more frustrating is that I also received an email from BethesdaSoft who offered these replacement options: 1. Pip Boy peripheral and stand: These will be shipped together and the stand is not available to be shipped by itself. 2. Only the Capsule: Please be advised if the lights don't work on the Pip Boy, remove the battery pull-tab inside the compartment where the phone is placed. Capsule? Battery pull-tab? Why does the replacement sound like the cell phone version Pip-Boy released with the game? The funny thing is they even referenced the video in which I compared both models. How more difficult could this possible be?

It would be nice, if you could just plug it into your computer, and access it that way... but from the base, the computer doesn't see it turned on... from the unit itself, still not seen. OH, and I discovered, if you remove the padding (where the straps are, like you can with the phone version) you will find under it, close to where it plugs in, a micro USB port... so I hooked a line into that, and connected to my PC... still nothing.

You can plug it into the computer however it doesnt provide any access to any system files the device might have. it just eases the capability to set it up for bluetooth and what have you.i suggest going through the link i provided to submit your claim.

I did that... got the standard troubleshoot message back, but with the extra sentence of "The flashlight button is the clear button on top of your unit." When people are saying it's stuck on the initializing screen... exactly what do they mean? For me, I turn it on, I get the scrolling text, and then blank screen. It's a powered screen, but blank. Are people getting farther along?

They should make a version where you van plug the holotape into the pip-boy, and then they should seperatly sell holotapes with fallout music and games on it.

Enclave Soldier ...the Radio knob would be for tuning, the Gain knob is definitely the correct knob for adjusting volume on a receiver. Increasing/decreasing gain would increase/decrease volume on similar RF receivers.

It would be nice if they would make the software downloadable. If they did that they could allow users to upload software updates through the usb port located under the padding. Simple solution to a defective product. I kept mine even if its defective, because the manufacturer stopped selling them. I'm sure they will still have collectable value even if flawed.

I thought the exact same thing! software updates would have been idle. I've tried messing with all the usb ports too and nothing would allow me to pull any data out of the device. I was hoping to pull the program out too and and learn and re-code it myself but no luck. Who knows, maybe someone out there will eventually figure something out.

It would be cool if the radio on this thing picked up real radio stations and had GPS so you can go to the map and see where you are like google maps. Maybe if the geiger counter worked as well as the holotapes and like someone else said you should be able to buy holotapes for this with games and soundtracks.

QuantumGaming very curious. I recently found an auction with an unknown Bluetooth pip boy cheap. And it’s stuck on the initialization screen. Got the usual run around and “will forward to the proper department”. So assuming no fix yet. I love the build and feel of it. I’ve seen only on mod fix that they basically used a raspberry pi and he had a friend who helped fix a pip boy program code. Maybe with a raspberry zero.

So to sum it all up, this is a great idea and almost finished product. For now this is a 400$ fancy alarm clock which in lots of cases doesnt boot up and after 2 actions you have to reboot it because it gets stuck. I am not so sure that all the bugs are solvable trough software update but i hope that bugfixes/tweaks will be done in next batches. With bugs fixed, few features/sensors added to it and better build materials i have no doubt in product sucess.

ATTENTION DEFECTIVE USERS DO NOT SELL YOUR PIP-BOY! I bought a defective one for a cheap price of $125.00 instead of the retail price of about $300.00. I contacted Bethesda. They are NOT defective! They just require a hard reset. Follow these steps and it should fix it. If not they is always a replacement guarantee within 30 days of purchase. Hope this helps. Please try to perform a factory reset on your Pip Boy unit to see if it resolves the booting issue you are experiencing. To do so, please follow the steps below. Please turn your Pip Boy Unit off Charge the unit for a full 8 hours. Turn the feature select knob to DATA, then hold the flashlight button down. Thanks for your comment, many in the comments have already tried the reset method. Many units ARE defective. Many devices dont even make it to the initializing screen where the hard reset would initiate. Some units are faulty straight out of the box and others go faulty over time (passed the 30 days replacement guarantee). There are enough people complaining to collect the sufficient amount of data to see these devices were poorly tested.

i used mine extensively for a period of time and it was fantastic using the bluetooth setting to play music and ehatnot but just two, three days ago it booted up and made it to the initialization screen and gets stuck there. :(

The reason I'm interested in those is the old school computer tech appearance. Only if an actual CRT was able to be used, but obviously that would make it more expensive, complex, and a little heavier. Also does it actually require bluetooth to function with navigation and radio?

Well there are ways that the old CRT look can be mimicked at least. This thing is already pretty heavy if you wear it long enough, lol cant imagine if it were actually CRT. But yes, your phone needs to be connected via blue tooth otherwise some features will not work. Its just a fancy gimic of a smart watch in some respect.

Ah your corners were dented too, my original one wasn't but the pipboy didn't work so the replacement one had corner dented but worst then yours which makes opening it unbalanced due to the dent.

Ah, my boxes seem the opposite of yours; my first one was perfect same with pipboy except the pipboy was stuck on initialization. While your box is like my replacement box except mine was dented in the corner more but the pipboy works just has annoying screen markings.

Derex19 what you’re experiencing is pretty much a known defect. Almost all of the Bluetooth pipboys were shipped with this issue. Unfortunately thinkgeek simply made a expensively cheap product and there isn’t much that can be done. Please check my pinned comment in the comments section. You’ll find a hard reset process that may or may not work depending on how bad the software issue is in yours. If it doesn’t work, I believe there’s information there as well for you to get in contact with thinkgeek for a replacement if they are still honoring that. Good luck

Derex19 unfortunately I know that situation all too well. It sounds like yours is beyond help. The only I could recommend is trying to get a replacement from wherever you bought it or try contacting thinkgeek as they manufactured this things. But be aware that as we all have seen, about 99% of these appear to be defective

The speakers on the pipboy dont sound terrible without the base but this may depend on what youre playing and how loud. The white "knob/port" thing in the back doesnt do anything, its stationary and cant be moved. it feels just like the release version "cellphone version" except this one is much heavier in comparison. you may get tired of wearing it after a prolonged amount of time.

It's worth a try, go through whatever means you have to so you don't stuck with a useless paperweight. And do something about it before more times pass. I'm going to be shipping mines back to thinkgeek this weekend so they can send me a replacement. I would suggest going to talk to a manager at the gamestop you bought it from and also try to contact their technical suggest online and seeing if there some type of return process there too.

Hangman EXE there's really not much of a comparison. Especially because one is only a plastic shell that houses your phone which uses an app with different connectivity than the Bluetooth deluxe version. The video would be as this comment.

QuantumGaming Update: I just fixed it by taking it apart the main face and screen and just removed the flat battery next to the motherboard and it started to boot up again. I put the battery back and it was working again

BUYER BEWARE. Bethesda store has NO phone support. Email support takes 24 hours between each dialogue, and they havent helped anyone that has a broken pipboy get functional so far. The consensus is that the MAJORITY of the units shipped so far are DEFECTIVE

Kyle ask Bethesda support on returns or exchanges? Because I feel the defective ones we got can't really be fixed from the consumer's side and doubt support can provide any way to fix it since that factory reset button combo didn't do anything.

I got a reply from thinkgeek, it contained a link to the games support website. Had nothing to do with their other products including thins. The most we can do there I post to the forums thought it would technically be unrelated. I'm going to search the bethsoft store again and possibly email thinkgeek again as well.

Mine is a brick. It worked for a little over a day, PERFECTLY... now, you get the scroll when you turn it on, and then blank screen. Doesn't initialize. Nothing. Zip. $400 paperweight.

When I got mine it worked flawlessly for like 2 months then it got stuck permanently in boot up screen, I refuse to part with because it's a timeless piece if anyone out there knows how to fix these and kick them out of bootloader soft ware glitches I'm sure, I'd pay for a service to get it updated via some program or something.

These were sold by ThinkGeek 4 or 5 years ago and cost around $400 usd. However they stopped making them because 99% of them were defective.

You got one of the defective ones. Bethesda talked about this. Shoot them an email and tell them. If you send it back they will replace it. As long as they see that you didnt break it lol.

It's pretty buggy. Especially when first used but after that, works fine. Not the greatest but fun to have as a clock and Bluetooth speaker

I don't know about that, this is a consistent issue that happens every single time. I don't see it getting any better. These are just highly defective especially for those who can't get passed the initial boot up.

Dom Retana yeah I had that problem twice. Or when I hit the green screen and gets stuck. It's very defective :/ sadly

Dom Retana when it got stuck, I held the power button down for a while then left it unplugged till it died (literally the first few minutes from opening the box too btw) then I plugged it in and left it charging for a few hours. Turned it on and left it on the plate. Weirdly, I get a white noise when I leave it plugged in like that and it bothers me so much but all I did was disconnect it and it stopped. So when I connect it now, I let the pip sit on the charger but not all the way.

@@interfer001 new I highly doubt. They stopped producing these years ago because they were all faulty. In regards to is it worth buying? That’s going to vary depending on your intent on getting one but more so because theres a huge risk as they were all defective and most to the point were inoperable. Just read any of the comments in each of my vids and you’ll see how many had issues.

@@interfer001 I took a look a few eBay listings. Let me say none of these are “new”. They are old maybe unopened units. Some don’t even mention their functionality, this goes back to the risk factor which is very high. Just take a look at other listings and you’ll see many that say “stuck on load screen”. Also a lot of these are being sold on eBay for 2 or 3 times the original cost, for that alone I’ll say definitely not worth it.

My Pip Boy is a brick. The battery died, and I recharged it before turning it back on... it showed the scroll screen bit, but then it's blank screen from then on. No initializing screen. I submitted my request 48 hours ago. Still no response. I am beyond frustrated. I had to make a LOT of sacrifices to buy this... well... brick.

Ok everyone, I have gone through the process of returning mine. It's on its way back to thinkgeek. So everyone knows, mine was purchased through through the bethesdasoft store, but if you notice, the store is managed by thinkgeek. If any of you have purchased yours through these channels, I suggest you submit a claim through the link I have provided and be patient. If you do not hear back from anyone after 3 days, by all means submit a new claim, however I would highly recommend you do not respond to any previous inquiries as even they mention it may change your position in their queue. I will be contacting them as soon as I see that the tracking number shows it has been received. They have agreed to send me a replacement. Quantity is limited from what I've been told, but I will keep you all posted and believe me I understand everyone's frustration. Please keep cool and patient and dont give up on getting this corrected for yourselves. Let me know if you have any questions. I will be updating this the best I can and I'll post a new video once I receive the replacement.

Ted Nelson you can return it with a replacement or money back it's hard making a OS and as a programer it's hard to make buttons go with features.

Ted Nelson your heart into it? You need to know what your doing in the first place. You need a lot of components for buttons and switches. soldering can be very tedious,the screen some codes. It can take months.
