Enjoying the series and the way you explain why you're doing what you're doing. Purchased my '65 F100 in Nacogdoches a few months back and it's waiting for me in Lufkin. Like you I'm originally from North Texas (Richardson) but moved to Northern Virginia for work and have been overseas pretty much since '88 (currently in Saudi). I know these videos are quite a bit of work to do but, just so know, there are geezers like me out here looking forward to putting your tips to work in our own shops. 'Till next time - all the live-long day!

Sweet update, I've been working along on mine also. Have the firewall smoothed, dash block sanded and the dings and dents on the roof worked out. I'm very excited that I was able to have my friend re-upholster my seat and headliner. Hope to have some paint and primer on the interior soon. Keep up the good work. Roland

I have been following along this whole series and I am doing so far the exact same build here in KY. I have already C notched my frame with pieces of schedule 40 pipe, and my rear Mustang gas tank is in. But I am not too far ahead of your build. I went to Las Vegas to get my truck so it had zero rust issues which has made the build much easier than normal. I have subscribed and will look forward to the next installment video.
@Texasknowhow7 жыл бұрын
jthulan - Awesome! Yeah, Las Vegas, AZ, New Mexico and TX are good places to get these trucks. I'm working on some rust in the floor pans now. A new episode should be out by next weekend. Stay in touch. TexasKnowHow.com then click contact at the top. We'll start an email exchange if you like.
@jthulan7 жыл бұрын
Didn't see the contact option. I'm partially from TX, as I lived in several cities for several years. I am curious as to your motor mounts. I have three options; the 351w/ fmx that was in my truck when I got it, I also have a decent running 352/auto, and access to a wrecked 96 Grand Marquis with 60k miles on a 4.6L. The 4.6 will bolt right up, but if I go with either the 351 or the 352, I will have to create motor mounts. Also, my original plan was to use an explorer rear end (bolt pattern to match my CV front, rear discs, non-open rear diff...) but had decided to make my existing 9" work and just have my axels redrilled. I would still only have a 3.25 geared open diff though. After watching your videos, I have decided to pick up an explorer rear end this weekend and go that route and save my 9" for another project. Glad I didn't have my axels redrilled yet.

If you chop the bottom of the stock frame/motor mounts and weld a plate it should bolt right to the crown vic mounts. Thats what most people do.

LOVE this series! I'm cringing every time I see you hammer in a seal without pack the backside with wheel grease though. lol Old mechanic's trick to keep the seal's spring from jumping out after install. ITS a PITA to get that spring back in place once installed. Thought i'd share the advise Clay. Looking forward to the 5 speed manual conversion. Seems we are building the same truck; I have a '69 though. However, we are going the same direction with the upgrades. I have kept the 9 inch and converted to the explorer rear disk brakes on it. About to start the CV swap, just waiting to borrow an engine hoist from a buddy! Keep up the good work and details!

I've not done that in the past, but I can see how packing with grease would help. Glad you are enjoying these vids. Thanks for commenting and telling us about your project too. Clay, great vids!! I don't mean to tell someone how to do work on their vehicle, but I would have replaced the bearings on the end of the rear end. You had the thing striped down and the parts are not that expensive and the seals had failed. Now if they fail you will have to take the axles out again. Some times when they fail the could wreck the rear end. The other thing is when you do final assembly use anti seize on all hardware exposed to the elements, if your not using Stainless Steel hardware. If you have to take any off in the future you will be glad.
@Texasknowhow7 жыл бұрын
No offense taken Eric. Each person makes their own calls on what to replace and when. I decided not to replace the bearings as the inside of the seal area was really clean and nice, no sign of water or anything other getting in there. Also the bearings felt really nice and tight and had good rear-end oil on them. My call, I'll live with it. Thanks for the comment and for watching though... Take care, Clay

been watching ur vids on the f100 cant wait for more on it. I got a 94 f150 i want to eventually do the cv swap on so i can bag the truck the twin beams have been replace with djm 3 inch drop beams but if i bag it with beam ill still habe major camber issues and wear tires. with the cv suspention i can do a bolt in bag intead of a bunch of chopping and welding jst to still have a camber issue. also will have more options for wheels because the 5x5.5 bolt pattern is hard to come by in certain wheels . I did come across a set of half decent wheels for now i like the look but dnt love it if you know what i mean i have a couple vids on my channel mostly stereo but do have a walk around of the truck im trying to make it stand out from other f150s jst to be different. always liked the street truck look and chevy is to common for me everybody got a Chevy street truck at shows plus love the old fords better anyway. I have a 67 f100 custom cab as well but it is a long bed. It was my grandfathers that he bought new. I want to do basically everything you have done to this one. IT also has the 352ci in it. I just don't have a shop or the tools like you do to get it done right. Thats the only thing that has kept me from tearing into it. I'm going to figure it out soon cause I can't take it anymore. I want to see that truck on the road. Any Ideas on how big a deal it would be to change the bed to a regular bed though?
@Texasknowhow7 жыл бұрын
Mine is a long bed as well. I've gone back and forth debating cutting it down to a short bed. I've even done the measurements and thought about doing a medium bed length to look cool and stand out in a crowd. Some folks have done this mod on KZbin and I'm sure you can find a good example. One such video is our friend Nathan of "Nathan's Garage", but his was cut down to fit a full Crown Victoria rolling frame. BTW, Nathan is doing all these mods in a older style two car garage in CA somewhere. In today's terms his garage is probably a 1.5 car garage. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5LYm393bsiBfrc This one is of the C10 Chevy truck, but you need to cut the frame like this - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqOclqSJqr2Kj7s Basically you cut 16" out of the bed and frame in front of the rear wheels and 4" out of the bed and end of the frame in the back behind the rear wheels. Difference of 20" for overall length. Some folks just cut the 16" in the front of the rear wheels and call it good, but that rear overhang is longer than a real short bed and looks different (they call this a "shlong bed", haha). In fact I think someone did this in Street Trucks magazine a few months back (maybe June '17 edition). Here's what that looks like - facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=386557724777825&set=gm.10151549332073882&type=3 You don't really need a full on shop to do these mods. I worked primarily in one bay of our 2 car garage for the past year and did most of those videos there. I had a shop, but it was just for all my junk really and it was too small to get a full vehicle into. Heck there are folks on FaceBook (see "Fixem your way 67-72 F100") who are doing these things out in the front drive who don't really have a garage at all. Thanks for writing and stay in touch; reach out to me for any help - WWW.Texasknowhow.com, then click "contact me" at the top. Take care, Clay

M Dean - yes this is our 3rd 4Runner and all have been this body style. We love the 4-Runners. I've been in the process of moving my family back to Texas from Virginia. Long move. We are now in temporary accommodations while we search for a home (with a shop or room to build one). I have some good footage that I need to process and publish. Hopefully in the next few weeks. You should post up some video of that cross-country trip. We loved Moab. Live in Salt Lake for 6 years. Bought and set up my Land Cruiser just for that reason. Take care, Clay

We are on our second 3rd gen, love them. IMHO one of the better semi-affordable SUV's. Had an 80 series between the 4Runners and although it was nice, it wasn't nearly as comfortable or affordable. Looking forward to the updates....good luck on finding the right place. We moved last April and then worked all last summer on the old house to get it sold. This is one of the main reasons I haven't worked on my '68 F100 or other auto projects much.

Did you ever figure out if you needed to shim that rear end to better align the flange with the drive shaft?
@Texasknowhow6 жыл бұрын

@johnbriscoe38707 жыл бұрын
Are you concerned at all about the 8.8 pumpkin being off center? Won't this cause unwanted vibration and early u-joint failure?
@Texasknowhow7 жыл бұрын
No, as long as the pinion angle is equal and opposite of the transmission coupler and the rear and the tranmission are perpendicular to the frame, you can move the pumpkin left or right and the u-joints won't complain. At least for this much, moving them to an extreme would not work. Many folks are running these successfully. Good question though. C

@Texasknowhow7 жыл бұрын
Saul Rodriguez - Hey Saul, good question. The rear-end is from a 2000 Explorer and it was 4 wheel drive. I think there is a range of years right in there that work and also look for the limited slip. This is indicated with an “L” in place of the decimal point on the ratio indications. I. E. 3L73 for a 3.73 ratio. Merry Christmas to you as well! Love San Antonio, we came there for a day visit last month. Take care! Clay

Pinion angle will be a few degs up usually. It needs to be equal and opposite of what your transmission output coupler is. So kinda depends on your setup. Hope that helps. Take care, C

Oh ok I can't wait to see it. Awesome that's great I'll be watching for it when you do uploaded. And I have a few questions? WhT engine your using? And the 8.8 rear end does it have the option for cool over springs? Do you need to built special brackets or how does that come in play if it does? And you said you got yours out of a 2000 explorer right? And did you had to cut the differential or it fits perfect we're it don't stick out the truck sides? Sorry I'm building an 69 f100 and thanks to you it's coming along..
@Texasknowhow7 жыл бұрын
Tony, the 8.8 out of the explorer (year 2000) is a leaf spring set up already, so I just put my spring packs (minus the two littlest leafs) back in with this rearend. It is slightly shorter than the 9" rear so I'm using spacers (2") for now and the explorer rear wheels just to move it around and it fits under the wheel wells perfect. Some of the 8.8s out there are for coil type setups, but the explorer is leaf setup. I'm using the original ford Big Block 352 FE engine (5.8 L) that came with the truck from the factory. It will be a gas guzzler, but should be fun to drive! Best of luck with your project man, these trucks are a lot of fun to work on. Take care, Clay

What about shocks and sway bar?
@Texasknowhow7 жыл бұрын
I had to think through the suspension for a while to determine how I wanted to end up. i.e. bag it or go with a fixed height suspension. For now, I want to get the truck back on the road in the fastest manner and save some $$. This was started as a DIY budget build so I'm staying with it. So, for the front the CV standard fare will do the trick; shocks are integrated into the springs and look to be in good shape, so keeping them. Same for the sway bar up front. In the rear, the Explorer rear end had a sway bar and I plan to also use that, but the vertical mounts on the rear end just hit my frame when the suspension is compressed, so I need to do a little trimming and add C-notches on the frame back there. I've got the original lower spring holding plates from the explorer which incorporate the lower shock mounts. They have been stripped of rust (see video on using electrolysis to strip rust) and I'm going to measure my final ride height to get the shock dimensions to the truck's original top shock mounts. Once I get this measurement, I can source some shocks. I was told the original Explorer shocks would work, so that may be simple. For the rear sway bar, I'm cleaning it up, painting and mounting with the OEM Explorer mounts (rearend side and the frame side). Hope this helps, some of this will be in the next few episodes. Clay

Clay.. Fellow Texan and reluctant Virginian here again. Would like your opinion on the Hobart Handler 140 welder you are using. Do you use gas with it, or just flux core? I was able to successfully extract the front clip from my '59 after much study and careful removal of nuts/bolts/welds(!) Learning how to work with limited space and still leave room in the garage for my wife's motorcycle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKWohpWMdrh6n9U Hope to hear from you soon. JCK
@Texasknowhow7 жыл бұрын
Love my Hobart Welder. It is a great welder for just about any metal thickness you may encounter on one of these builds. I use the gas; it is so clean of a weld you don't really have to brush it after, but I do (because I'm OCD). I watched your video and the way your front clip comes off is very similar but slight differences than the 67-72s. Looks like you are on your way man! Keep up the good work and keep posting - your videos can help many others working on the same body style trucks.
