Aww that EMD prime mover sound lol. I work for the Union Pacific RR in the Midwest and we use these in our high horsepower units along with the other railroads here.

The predecessors to those GM 710 engines date all the way back to WWII !!! Really unique engines I must say - welded frame/block, "uniflow" design (no intake valves!), starts fairly easily when cold, turbocharger has a clutch and gearbox to reduce turbo lag, etc... plus the high pressure fuel lines are encased in the valve covers so if there is a leak it won't start a fire. (Some locos in the USA use hoses for the high pressure fuel, and they are not enclosed in a separate compartment. Unfortunately, if there is a leak in one of the hoses, it will spray a fine mist of diesel throughout the engine compartment, usually causing a fire!) P.S. Some locos with 710 engines here in the states have an air starter, which is easier on the loco batteries. P.S.2. Also popular back in the days (around the 40's to mid 1990's) were Detroit Diesel (originally a division of General Motors) engines, which are quite similar in design. They were used in trucks, busses, fire trucks, military equipment (including some tanks), etc... and had a similar scream/roar when under power. :P

I subscribed for your 37 rerailing video, spotted these 66 vids and realised you're also in Newport. Small world! Cracking videos, it's nice to see more than you would normally. 20 years old now, time flies, it seems like only yesterday the first few landed at Newport docks. I don't half miss the 37 growl in South Wales though, the modern stuff just doesn't quite cut it for me.

I've been inside a 47 and 40 and they looked a lot more substantial and complex than the 66. I agree that the 66 is a good loco but the British stuff was vastly superior build quality. I always think the new gen of locos look really cheap in comparison to older British built machines.
@DOCTORDROTT
@DOCTORDROTT 6 жыл бұрын
British built locos are better build quality, but the 66 are now 21 year old and have done nearly 1 million miles each. Class 47's are my favorite to work on. Best loco built. But the Westerns were something special. Spent over 30 years working on 37's. A class 66 new was £1.3 million each

@Pedro DLR GM engines are good power units . but the EMD locos are average build quality and noisey. Worked on these and the 59's. If they put a GM into a 60.......... you would have a super loco

@DOCTORDROTT I think that is feasible. Look at all the stored 60s thn look at the 69s, a GM engined 56. Surely bringing the 60s back in using simpler GM guts, would fulfil the needs of pretty much every operator.

@FM60260 8 ай бұрын
@@saippuakivikuappiasIt would be a bit boring if everything had the same engines. The class 56 have pretty much all become class 69s or scrap so there aren't any RKTs left. If the 60s were converted it would mean Mirlees would be extinct since 37901 has also alegedly been marked for battery conversion. There is also the issue that if the majority of locomotives in the country are powered by the same brand, the manufacturers can easily hold the entire freight network to ransome by demanding more money for servicing or they can stop them running altogether. Similar to what is happening in Poland.

@FM60260 very true, but the 60s are extremely expensive to maintain and not as reliable as the 66s. Don't get me wrong, they're a "better" loco when everything bar availability/reliability is taken into consideration, but they are the things that affect a company's bottom line. The Electro-Motive stuff just works and when it doesn't, it's usually a much easier fix than on a 60. Pros and cons to each approach as you rightly pointed out but at the moment there is nothing out there that can do the job of a 60 but that has the reliability/availability of a 66, unless you count 59s or the 66s geared for 60mph but that again leaves you with Electro-Motive...

Coolant temperature is around 70 /80 decrees C , so very warm in the engine compartment. I have found that a class 60 engine room seems hotter

@@nounoufriend1442 I’m pretty sure the 59 has a 16 cyl to my knowledge not sure, a lot of our locos here in Australia are dominantly 16 cyl but very few with 12 and 20 cyl One loco that looks similar to the 66 and 59s is our g class and 81 class locomotives
