I'm learning to drive these and this is one of the best tour's I've seen.

surely better than any documentation the railroads provide

Back in BR days the mpu cards were known as traction cards or Modules . The hsts went through them on a regular basis , usually on the load reg side.

Thank you for such an honest, comprehensive, and knowledgeable tour. As an electronic/mechanical engineer and loco enthusiast, it invaluable viewing. Hope you can do more on the work you do, really interesting stuff.

I've always wanted to drive a freight train but there is no one that is hiring in the north east of the UK.

Freight is on decline with too many companies . DB are looking for drivers

It would have to be a trainee driver role as no experience,😢😢

What are those 3 nipples below the circuit breakers? They seem to be on just about every fairly modern EMD i’ve been on. Those cab heaters are the same as used on EMDs in North America. Sometimes the heating element is weak, and we block the inlet vents with paper towels. They put out a little more heat then. The Smart Start is good on the locomotives with either an electronic governor, of electronic fuel injection. On our older SD40-2, which is what class 59 is based, the Smart Start sometimes screws up. With the mechanical governors you sometimes have to give it more fuel in starting by holding in the lay shaft. Smart Start can’t do that. I’ve seen them keep cranking until the battery dies. Other times the system gives up when the diesel won’t start. In this case hopefully someone is available to manually start it. If not the lights, fuel pump, and other devices might drain the batteries.

Air filter check points, With the EM2000 screen, and a lap top plugged in and those ports everything can be checked on test runs from number 1 cab to monitor performance .

What, exactly, are the Pass/Goods buttons, in the cab, for?
@DOCTORDROTT6 жыл бұрын
indication of brake rate, Pass rate faster brake application / release, Goods position just has a slower brake application heavy freight trains, coal steel etc. Some faster rated trains, freightliner types class 4 trains run in Pass position. Most freight run 60 mph max, but container trains up to 75 MPH , the top rated speed of a class 66

Do your goods wagons have graduated release, or direct release brakes? Here in North America, most passenger trains allow a partial release of the brakes, but freight control valves just do a direct release.

What is the noise going bang bang bang?
@DOCTORDROTT3 жыл бұрын
Its the auto drain valve, expelling moisture from the airs system

Hi James, also wanted to ask why do class 66's make a kind of chirping noise at tickover when at a red stop signal?
@andrewwww76843 жыл бұрын
Also, why do we buy class 66's from Canada why on earth can't we make our own loco's, we gave birth to the railways/railroads we were world class builders of steam trains, I live in Stockton on Tees the birth place of the railways.

@@andrewwww7684 In the UK , the loco builders could not deliver a bulk order of "off the shelf" locomotives. EWS ordered 250 66's in one go. Its sad to see .We don't seem to make things these days. Years later the factory where these locos were made was also closed and production moved to where labour was cheaper

Just think 1 mpg flat out pulling 2000 tonnes at 60 mph, but only at this setting 25 % of the total time on average.... HGV hauling 44 tonnes only doing 8 mpg . I have been on a Scania 660 hauling a Caterpillar 777 (120 tonne )dumptruck doing 1/2 mpg !
