Part 2 Herbert Herr Cuckoo Clock repair w/Bushing work

To finish up this clock, I found I had one bushing to replace and one of the whistle boxes did not go with this clock and had to make some changes. Both Whistle Boxes had the same tune.

Here I do most of my work on clocks. Mainly cuckoo clocks, yet I am always looking for the unusual and eye catching clocks. Some of the clocks I get into are ones that need saved from the dump. They fell off the wall from not securing the clock to the wall using the stud behind the sheetrock. Some of the clocks were laid to rest out in the garage or barn and I except the challenge of getting them back together again.
A well loved clock at one time is one that has a lot of wear and you find old bushings that might need to be replaced.

I like the toothpick for placing the bushing in the hole. I have shot them everywhere trying to use tweezers.

Those tweezers need some rubber on the ends to hold the bushings. The toothpick seems to work the best for placing to see if your new hole is the right size of not. Thanks so much for watching and you have a great week.

Yeah I have seen the videos where the guy buys the one kind of bushings which are tall and he uses the bushing cutter to take the excess off. I would imagine that it would be easier handling the taller bushings. I also file down or use my dremel on the inside of the plates. Works for me. That is what matters. The outside wire that you touch to trip the cuckoo to advance if it is too close to the inside lever then when the clock goes into warning the door will open. Typically I make a bigger space between the two. You have extra holes in the whistle box. Someone who can hear well which isnt me could hear the difference in tone. I normally put tape on them. Love how you moved the bellows. I think it sounds ok to me. But again I am death. LOL. As always great video. Thanks for the shout out.

After I learned more about the whistle box I decided that when you screw the whistle box against the clock box, where the extra holes are, it doesn't matter about the holes. Yes, if it make you feel better, then use some tape on the holes, but the whistle box is just a box with a piece of wood in it at different heights for different tones. No air moves in the box, the air moves across the reed and the sound wave from the box is made. At least, that is the way I see it. Now if the box were broke and you glued it almost all back together, then I could see you would want to seal up the cracks. I do show bushing being replaced, but I don't show too much because there are some that think I don't do it right. The main thing is does the bushing work after you installed it. My answer is, Yes it does. Thanks for watching Cobe’s Clocks 2

If your worried about file marks and people calling you a butcher what I would do is measure how tall the plate is take the bushing and put it in a vice and file it there and continue to measure until the numbers match up

The bushings are too small to do this and I am not worried about someone thinking it's butchering the movement. I do what I can with the tools I have and if the person watching the video only has the one clock to work on, then this is the video for them. Very nice. What can we use as bellow wires? I’m using a shaped thin paper clip but I think it’s too heavy as the volume of the sound of the cuckoo is too low.

They sell new bellow wires on line, or some people us wire from a piano, but they are hard to bend for my taste. As long as you have long enough wire to open the Bellow at least 3/4 of the way open and you can bend the wire, you should be good to go.

This clock I think was Frankenstein together. I fix the bellow that was with this clock, but I had to move it around and move the lift eye and wire for the birds tail to make it all work. This is also why the bellows sound the same tone. And I didn't have a different tone whistle box in my extras box.

@@justmike57 If you put a pice of plywood and glue it over the holes on the whistle the clock will cuckoo normally. I've had this problem in the past when i would fix mine

i have 4 Cuckoo Clocks they are old and all running but i dont know what i have !!! i need to know what kind of clocks i have HELP!!

Normally you look on the back of the movement. Regula is the most popular movement in clocks, but there are a few other name brands out there. Remember that some companies only build the Box the movement is in and have their name stamped on the movement. Very old clocks will have a count wheel in them that you can see working as the clock counts out the hour.
