I just retired as a locomotive engineer (driver) after 32 years, and I can tell you I had quite a few diesel locomotives like this that set a lot of line side fires as well as fires inside the car bodies. Many fires were from aspirated ( non turbo) diesels that were the result of carbon build-up inside the stacks which also included diesel and oil residue that were not properly combusted. Most of the fires were from older EMD dieseld, but I had a lot of newer GE diesels that were notorious fire throwers like in your videos and these were turbo-equipped. It was one of my daily inspections before I left the terminal yards to make sure I had extra fire extinquishers in each locomotive especially during the dry season just in case they started fires. Sometimes it could get pretty intense at times when my locomotives were under a heavy load climbing hills. I remember a few times seeing fire and sparks shooting out the stacks so high it looked like a volcano. Glad those days are over!

@@NotSoCrazyNinja None unfortunately, but some of my conductors snapped a few from their I-Phones before they were banned from bringing them inside the cab ( safety reasons). Personally, it could rattle your nerves if the fire was coming from inside the engine room while pulling at speed and the conductor is trying to put it out with an extinquisher. What was scary was if we had to switch an industry that delt with hazardous materials, we had to make sure there was no excessive sparks being thrown from the stacks before we went in. I could write a book about those days, I guess!

Our EMD's tend to burn pretty clean all things considered, however some the older Goodwin-Alco engines would clag a bit and sometimes give you some fireworks. It used to be quite a sight seeing the 48 class which could still often be found as trailing power, pulling fully loaded wheat or flour trains out of the starch mill nearby at night at close quarters... Some without exhaust scrubbers fitted had quite a bit of ember and flames coming out the stacks when they were working hard. On the other hand, Qube's Danish MZIII class engines with the 20-645 EMD main engine can get pretty hot and heavy up the top.

These engines are not blown or dying, this is just spontaneous burning of carbon deposit in the exhausts. It is quite "normal" on older engines that have not been properly cleaned. A blown turbo can cause this kind of fire too.

This is insane. Are they just stack fires or some kind of engine failure?
@NotSoCrazyNinja3 жыл бұрын
I think it varies. During cold start, there is a lot of atomized diesel going out the stack since not many of the cylinders are firing just yet. When some do, they release hot exhaust gas into the same area where there is a lot of fuel. If the fuel to air ratio is right and the temperatures are right, bam, fire in the stack. There could also be a lot of carbon buildup in the stack that can get hot enough to catch the unburned diesel on fire. Diesel engines use compression to ignite the fuel, so, on cold start, it can take a little bit for all the cylinders to fire right.
@unity35963 жыл бұрын
There just heating up there cold unburned oil that's why the locomotives are smoking while starting up but if it smoking constantly that's a engine problem

Ähm...Wie wär's mit Motor abstellen?
@froz3nmindz1242 жыл бұрын

@MrPaul-id8vu3 жыл бұрын
It's like burning oil and soot out of an engine exhaust pipe!
@christophhro13 жыл бұрын
They will test the maximum Force of the Diesel-Engine from the loco, this produces Current like a very huge dynamo. The powerlines are disconnected fom the drive alternators and the produced current has to bring outside to a variable Resistor. So they can control the load for regulating the diesel engine. And as you can see, theres a lot of Load. And don't be afraid, the maximum load has reached, the Exhaust pipes were not molten and the smoke pollution rate is okay for such a 2-Stroke Diesel. There is only burning carbon and not fireflys, made of molten Steel, magnesium or other. The Engine herself runs proper, without a trace of any damages. In 0:12 -those Engines sang goodbye..
@Dokker623 жыл бұрын
Stationary test with an incorrectly adjusted Injection system - as usual in russia. The engine runs way too rich with far exceeded exhaust temperatures. These nutjobs never had any clou about pumps and nozzles.
@christophhro13 жыл бұрын
@@Dokker62 agree, but a 2-stroke engines produces more smoke than 4-stroke engines anyway. However, there are normal russian parameters for a stationary load test in this take, so i'm afraid.

@@christophhro1 If you watch e. g. estonian 2TE10Ms you'll find pretty low-smoke working 10D100s considering their age and ancient constructive principle. These dinosaurs can run ok if maintained professionally. Examples in this vid are far from proper handling.
