I agree. Another thing that I think is sometimes missed about The Hobbit is this book is Bilbo literally telling the reader his adventure, just like he was doing at the beginning of the LotR at his birthday party with the hobbit children. So everything in this story is presented through the lens of Bilbo Baggins and what he thinks and how he thinks that Middle Earth "works" etc. A great example of this is that we know that trolls are not concerned with the proper way to cook anything, nor do they talk ... but Hobbits are concerned about cooking and food and they of course talk. This is Bilbo projecting his own ideas and ideals onto the trolls in his story ... sort of like the fish story that every time it is told the fish that is caught gets bigger and bigger. This is one of the things that makes it such a good children's book as it is more fairy tale than historical account. Looking at these Hobbit movies, and the book too for that matter IMHO, as an example of a historical account of these events, much like LotR is, is sort of missing the best part of The Hobbit.
@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy11 ай бұрын
Indeed, it's important to remember that Tolkien wrote _The Hobbit_ first and only ended up writing LOTR because his publishers wanted another Hobbit-centric story rather than what he'd already had written for _The Silmarillion_ at the time... even if it took him another 15 years to complete. This is why I implore people to watch the "Hobbit" movies before the LOTR movies at this point in time. The former story is just not as dense, epic, or complex as the latter.

Its my perception that Frodo wrote the LOTR story and the way its told reflects his personality. Bilbo wrote The Hobbit and it reflects his. To me Bilbo always had flare when telling his stories so the movies are funny and exaggerated to reflect that. I hope I'm explaining this to be understood.

The Hobbit is very different from Lord Of The Rings. The Hobbit was written for children as an adventure type story. Hence it's corny and quirky style. LOTR was written some years later more for adults as a metaphor of WW2. Tolkien was part of a writers circle that also included C. S. Lewis of The Chronicles Of Narnia fame. Which have also been put to film.

When these movies came out, 3D was trendy, and Peter Jackson wanted to film the movies in 3D, but 3D cameras made it more difficult for them to use the more practical effects of the LotR trilogy and they also couldn't use old camera tricks like forced perspective to make some of the actors look smaller than others. The result is they did have to rely a lot more on CGI and green screen. The Hobbit is also a more lighthearted story than LotR. It's meant to be more like a fairy tale while LotR was more of an epic fantasy.

The problem with this movie was that it was made as a Prequel to LOTR. However, the book was written first and was meant to be a stand alone story. But the Tolkien decided to to make that ring "The Ring of Power" and created the LOTR. The book is actually a whole lot simpler but the studio took Tolkien's other writings and added them into this movie to make it a trilogy when in reality, I should have only been 1 movie. It's still a lot of fun and it's great to be back in Middle Earth, however it's kind of a messy at times. I still love watching it. When you're done with this, go seek out the animated Hobbit movie made in the late 70's lots of fun, simple and to the point. However if you want a laugh, go check out the animated LOTR made shortly after and you'll see what I grew up with until that Masterpiece made by Peter Jackson came out.

You gotta understand that The Hobbit was written for children. (In fact, I learned to read by following along when my mom read The Hobbit to me and my sister.) Anyway, The Hobbit is a lot more action-packed and not as heavy. The book IS more light-hearted, with the trolls, etc. And then later, J.R.R. Tolkien expanded that world and wrote The Lord of the Rings for adults. (He actually went back and updated The Hobbit to make it fit better into the Middle Earth of the LotR.) Also there's a lot of singing and poetry in all the books, so it's not weird for a fan of the book that the goblin king sings. Peter Jackson didn’t originally intend to make The Hobbit. The LotR was the story he wanted to tell. The heavy one.

THe main problem was that there was very little time to film and no time to prepare for these movies. Jackson was brought in last minute and filmed it 3d and a higher speed than normal, which added difficulties. In LOTR, he had years to prepare and make much of it real and not so much cg.

The Hobbit and LOTR has a 50 to 60 year gap. Elrond is something like 3000 years old. In LOTR Aragorn is 87 years old. as he is Duadain. A race of long lived humans but not as long as Elves or Dwarves. You should read both books plus The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales.
@magnus1001002 ай бұрын
No, Elrond is actually much older. He was around 6440 years old when Bilbo finds the ring the year 2941 of the third age. Elrond was born the year 532 of the first age in Beleriand and he was over three thousand years old already when Isildur cuts the finger of Sauron in the first Lord of the rings movie. Galadriel is almost 2000 years older than Elrond. She was born in Valinor in the ages of the trees (The trees in Valinor that was destroyed by Ungoliant and Morgoth). The year was 1362 during the years of the trees so she is over 8000 years old when Bilbo finds the ring.

I agree that it's hard to not compare it to LoTR because it's in the same world and shows some of the same characters but Peter Jackson had 3-4 years pre production time to prepare everything for LoTR and had only 4 months to get everything needed for The Hobbit. He said in an interview that he'd have cast take extended lunch breaks so him and his wife could write the script to be done in the next scene. He wasn't even given enough time to put a screenplay together before starting. Even with all the studio pressure/interference, I think they turned out great for what they are. A light hearted adventure. I still marathon both trilogies and with LoTR, it's a day of crying through half the movies and with the Hobbit, it's popcorn and entertainment. As much as I love both trilogy, I love the contrasting differences between the two. The Hobbit is an embellish epic adventurous tale told through the eyes of Bilbo with some half-truths for Frodo. It's goofy and entertaining. Whereas In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo's story is filled with suffering and hardships. He quickly realizes he's not like Bilbo, and that the actual reality is no match for the legend he admires. In the end he loses his optimism and his happiness and leaves Middle-Earth.

@paulkondon11 ай бұрын
Yeah, there were a lot of people who never read the books who loved the Lord of the Rings movies, and wanted more of that world. Of course, while it does mean Gandalf and Bilbo and Elrond and Galadriel, as well as Saruman and Frodo, it also means Arwen and Aragorn and Legolas and Gimli. There were no actual sequel novels, but LotR was itself a sequel to The Hobbit. (The Silmarillion is a Homer-esque construction of the mythological history of Middle Earth.) Peter Jackson wanted to go back and give Bilbo his due and tell some more history, but didn't want to direct. He gave it to Guillermo del Toro to direct, who then left in the middle to direct Pacific Rim. Jackson stepped back in, and decided to add more characters than were ever in The Hobbit, and also to let the LotR fans see the foreshadowing that was never in The Hobbit, but added later to explain Hobbit events. The original was going to be either one long movie, or two shorter ones. Jackson went a little too far, and there are scenes which do seem a bit dragged out to make it a trilogy like LotR. Unfortunately, it couldn't measure up to LotR, but gave him three movies to fill with extra lore. I always felt that gave Gandalf (Ian McKellen) more to do, because all the scenes where he is off doing other things weren't in the book at all. He was just gone and Bilbo and the dwarves were left to themselves. You'll see more of that in the next two. If you leave out the scenes where Gandalf disappears, you get about what was in the book. Funny though, some of the parts you seemed to dislike the most are actually important parts of the book, especially the goings on in the Goblin caves, both with the dwarves and with Bilbo. The riddles scene is actually to demonstrate that Bilbo is not a fighter, wants to harm no one, and knowing nothing of who Gollum is nor the true nature of the ring, it's just an interesting diversion and test of his own wits and skill to get out alive completely alone. As you mentioned, the story is The Hobbit, not Gandalf and the Hobbit. And, as many people have mentioned elsewhere, it's a children's story with a moral for the idea that the little people have an important contribution, and their struggles are every bit as important as big wizards and heroes. p.s. the third movie, The Battle of Five Armies, was handled in a single chapter in the book. Azog was mentioned in passing as present when Thror died, but did not appear after that. Those are examples of how much extra was added. I think a better approach might have been do one movie, then a bunch of extras for a director's cut, with the "side quests". Then there would be no need to deliberately fill out two more movies with material. What was left out was all the songs, which told a lot of the story, especially the dwarves' song of the Lonely Mountain, which is several pages long. Bilbo is enchanted by that song, and that convinces him to go along. He later tries his own hand at song writing, and a bit of it is sung by Gandalf arriving and Bilbo departing in the beginning of Fellowship.

Completely agree with you guys. Fanservice indeed. Its fun yes, but that's all it is. Its stretched. The story here is just for one film. They made it into 3. And it shows. Its not bad, its watchable, but it holds no power over what masterpiece the lotr trilogy is. Its not even 1/4th as good. It is what it is. Its goofy, its cartoony, yeah, its a kid's short novel after all. And its ok. The first hobbit film is the best of the three in my opinion. The part that is super close to the book is the riddles in the dark chapter with Gollum. That was done amazingly well. Lots of other stuff in this trilogy is not even from the book. Its fabricated. But I guess we can kinda accept it, if we agree that its just a nostalghia trilogy to get back into the world. LOTR was a dark trilogy, and the source material was like that too. The story and flow was insanely good, it can't be topped. Also agreed about CGI, there is something magical on what they achieved with the practical effects in the first lotr trilogy that can not be replicated no matter the money they throw to CGI effects. CGI truly makes it more ugly and unrealistic most of the time. Its messy. Its fun though with the right perspective. And hey you will enjoy the dragon for sure!!

The reason for the riddle game is because The Hobbit was a story Tolkien made for his kids. That he revised later. Children's stories usually have puzzles/games like this for the characters to overcome. It's a clever way at putting a teaching/learning lesson into a story.

When Galadriel said "I have passed the test. I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel" it was because despite always having wanted power, and a realm of her own to rule, she denied the One Ring which is the strongest of all the rings. She bared the ring Nenya which was what empowered her and the realm she created, Lothlorien, which she could not do without Nenya. She knew that denying the One Ring meant two things for sure in the very near future: 1) Frodo would succeed and destroy the One Ring, which had power over all other rings of power, which meant Nenya would lose its power, which is what kept her realm alive and flourishing and 2) She knew that if Frodo failed and Sauron was reunited with the One Ring, then should would have to take off her ring to avoid being corrupted by Sauron and become a slave to the ring she bared. Either way the test she passed was not giving in to her yearning for power and in doing so meant she knew she was giving up all the power she had at this time, and so she knew it was time to return home, and that her place was not in Middle Earth.

Just to clear it up. The creatures in the mountain are goblins and they are ruled by the goblin king (the big one with the saggy neck lol) they have similarities to orcs, but they are ultimately different species. They turn to stone in sunlight like the 3 big ones earlier in the movie that were trying to roast the dwarfs, which is why they usually live inside caves or mountain. I like your guys reaction, and watching it with you guys, thanks! When Bilbo gets the ring, it doesn’t attract Sauron’s attention like by the time LOtR is set because he hasn’t bent all his strength towards finding it yet or whatever, so yeah basically the wearer just gets to be invisible. It’s funny you mentioned you didn’t like the riddle battle between Bilbo and Gollum, as it is such an iconic part of the story from the book! But it’s ok, maybe because it is more a children’s story, it really does come off well in the book. I totally agree that the increase in CGI cheapens the effect of the movie. I love the New Zealand landscape as Middle Earth, loved seeing Galadriel in the story, and her friendship with Gandalf. Also enjoyed the inclusion of Radagast the brown, though he is portrayed very differently than I imagined from the little description we get in LOtR. Like you I just enjoy spending time again in middle earth. And the soundtrack! It really does serve the movies well.
@majbrat11 ай бұрын
This is set in middle earth. It's just 60 years before LOTR and Sauron was just stirring, so the orcs & evil beasts are not all controlled by his evil yet. Regarding your opinion: To be fair, the Hobbit was written a little lighter to appeal more to children, and the movie makers wrote it with a bit more silly humour and less darkness than LOTR to get more of a younger audience for $$$ to make it PG, and they added characters not in the books (a big no-no for die hard fans as Tolkien was very deliberate and smart with his characters and humour). LOTR is much more serious and had a more exclusive, older rating in theatres. The stakes are also much higher in LOTR for the whole world is in peril; this one is an adventure. Another problem they had is they did not have Peter Jackson, his wife, or a lot of the team to start with. The movie production was postponed years with issues, then part way through filming the director was fired and they begged Peter to come save it. If the Jackson team had written the screenplay, it would have been closer to book, and been better imo, but Peter & team did their best with what was written. The special effects coming in the next 2 movies are pretty wonderful and they are fun & entertaining. The first one had to set up a lot of character introductions, and establish how important reclaiming the mountain was, which is never as fun. Keep an open mind, and remember this one you can watch with your kids sooner once you feel it's ok. ;) Then LOTR when they are teens.

Can't forget not everything is an accident. The One Ring is trying to get back to its master, who is regaining his power. Trapped with Gollum under the ground it senses when a possible way out arrives in the form of Bilbo, so it "falls" out of the pouch to be "found". Bilbo's sword glows blue when orcs or goblins are near, and likely any other related critters. As far as the majority of complaints about this trilogy, imagine the difficulty of squeezing the LotR trilogy into just one movie. Now, imagine trying to stretch one shorter story like The Hobbit into a trilogy. Either way would create a world of aggravation for fans of the books.

I liked these movies but the LOTR trilogy is a masterpiece. So I'll admit that when Bilbo first picks up The Ring, the LOTR music playing gives me chills and a little excitement.

I think that makes sense with saying the movie was all over the place and if you have a different perspective from the books. The hobbit book seems to have constant action every chapter. Obviously more of a kid’s story so it’s a bit goofy but fun.

The gray version of Gandalf is in fact in some ways the weakest out of all the wizards in terms of raw power, at least according to the books, and even when the "God" of this world chose him as one of The Maya to walk middle earth, they did it because of his courage and power to give hopes to others. That was his talent. A different kind of talent, and one that exhibited wisdom of a different kind. It was never strength or being super powerful or something else. It was all about giving hope to the races of Middle earth to survive and stand tall against evil. And they made no mistake in choosing him as we have seen.

"When elves go bad they go Marvel villain bad" A fun little tie in with the MCU and Tolkien's universe: Cate Blanchett is Galadriel and Hela, Lee Pace is Thranduil and Ronan and Hugo Weaving is Elrond and Red Skull. Also, the scene with Bilbo and Gollum, "riddles in the dark", also has a tie in with the MCU: in Black Panther when agent Ross interogates Klaue, well who are the two actors playing the characters 😁

This is indeed middle earth. Rivendell was in the hobbit and the lord of the rings. Middle earth is the continent. Frodo and Sam called bilbo a g because they heard bilbos story from bilbo. Who says "yea I was a wuss" when telling a story?

Believe me, most of LOTR fans won´t be surprised by your reserved reaction. I´d say that, if you would claim it comparable with LOTR movies, it would feel just fake. Hobbit was the first published book from Middleearth from Tolkien. And it was originally bed time story for his children. It is an awesome short lighthearted fairytale about little lazy hobbit (a folks that he invented in this book - hence the name) dragged by an extravagant wizzard into adventure with funny grumpy dwarves, stupid clumsy trolls, singing nasty orcs, high stake game of riddles, and heroic march on greedy dragon. I really recomend reeding the book. It´s short, fun and quite magical. When the LOTR books came out, it was entirely different. It was epic saga expanding immensely the world, the mytology and the stakes. It was partly built on the Hobbit (and revealed that during Hobbit storyline, there were happening much more important things than it seemed in the fairytale) but it was completely different style, tune and amount of story (Hobbit is short book, LOTR are three large ones). As someone pointed out here, Hobbit was "supposedly" writen by Bilbo, who was in his eyes simply on an awesome adventure (and became a bit of wierd celebrity for that back in uneventfull Shire). And LOTR was written by Frodo, who held the weight of whole worlds fate, and was not able to heal from that trauma. When the LOTR movies were created, it was in some ways one huge professional fan project. Practically everyone from the huge crew were fully into it. What was possible, was shot in real locations with real masks and properties. They had huge story source (three large books with apendixes and large legendarium) and passion to reproduce it as close as possible (recreate the same feeling as they have reading them). And they had will to spent enough time, energy and resources on it. And the result speaks for itself. When the Hobbit movies were created, the situation was quite different. There was probably simmilar passion at the start, but than studios came in and forced their way in hope of higher proffit. They demanded, that this tiny book, should be also triology (original plan were two movies). So the story had to be expanded by a lot of things different from the book (which usually don´t quite fit with the main story - that was also heavilly altered). They even forced the change of director (Peter Jackson was not the original one, but they thaught, that he would make it as great as he made LOTR). And they wanted the movies as soon as possible, without spending unnescessary money. So less real locations, less carefully crafted props, more CGI and more cheap time fillings. There were even instances, when the actors had to shoot random battle scenes, that were not yet in the script (and the script had to be done based on them). Even the soundtrack got short. Sure, there are some amazing pieces, but also some cheap nonsencical ripoffs (like using LOTR Nazgul theme as random epic tune for unrelated epic scenes). Yeah and lot of fanservice too squeeze the most of nostalgia and LOTR success. I still remember the dissapointment from cinema, where I was looking forward to see passionately presented beloved fairytale, and have seen wierd attempt of "LOTR success part two" that could not decide if it should be heavy and serious or lighthearted and goofy (and failed to combine both). Not mentioning how far it went away from the book, too make it long enough for three movies. I don´t want to just rant about it. It was not that bad as it might sound from what I just wrote. In some way I enjoyed it and it definetly had a lot of great parts (exspecially the first movie). But I just really understand your dissapointment and simply tried to shed some light on few potential reasons for it. And I believe that most of the fans understand too, in some way.

Saruman began to secretly desire the ring hundreds of years before the events of Lord Of Lord Of The Rings and before Sauron's return. The Necromancer is basically Sauron, I think.
@spencernaugle11 ай бұрын
If Sauron let it be known that he was not dead. Everybody would have worked together to fight him again to weaken him. And keep the number of orcs down. (Obviously they can't kill him, so it's like cutting off a weed each year instead of digging out the roots) He Used the name Necromancer so he could go about his business Undercover. Slowly building up his strength and growing his army. Only around now, did the council realize the necromancer is Sauron. I forget how long it took him just to regenerate a physical body again. After the ring was cut from his hand, he was in spirit form for a long time.

I 100% agree with your comments at the end of the film reaction. I felt the same way the first time I watched it. Also bear in mind, that the Hobbit films are about 60%-70% made up and do not even follow the actual book. In the films they've made Azog the Defiler the main antagonist - and while he technically existed in Thorin's story in his past, he has passed away and is not in the company's adventure to Erebor at all in the actual book. This definitely effected the way The Hobbit felt on screen. I'm sure lot's more plays into it, but these films are certainly subpar to the LOTR trilogy for a multitude of reasons. Still beautifully filmed and edited, nonetheless. Honest reactions are always the best! Keep up the excellent work y'all!

You guys must dislike performance art, that's the second or third time you've mentioned secondhand embarrassment when people dance, or sing, or play music live lol... I'm guessing you all weren't theatre folk. Everyone in my friend group plays instruments, my cousins teach dance, and we get together and jam and people sing songs and other people start dancing, and it's a good time, so personally, I don't feel any shame in any of that... Now, if it's bad, someone who loves you should tell you, so you stop embarrassing yourself lol

You will probably get a different reception to these than you did with LOTR. People are pretty tough on them because they are sort of cookie cutter cinema at points; something LOTR isn't. It almost comes off as a children's movie at times... I honestly think its fine because I always viewed The Hobbit books as more of children's tale. Either way, they are fun in my opinion and you get to see more dwarven stuff which is cool.

I know that the Rings of Power gets a ton of hate and I definitely see why. The show deserves much of the criticism it gets but I'm still kind of enjoying it. There's one character in particular that definitely hits me in the feels. If you let go of the expectation that the show should be an exact recreation of the Silmarillion it's actually pretty decent. I for one would like to see you guys react to it.
