Smaug talks, because some of the dragons of middle earth had the power of speech. They were created by Morgoth, the first dark lord, and were given intelligence. Morgoth's first Dragon was called Glaurung, and he was said to have had very powerful speech, with which he could pretty much bewitch his enemies.

“Necromancer” means someone who uses magic to bring the dead back to life or at or turn corpses into zombies. This was not the origin of Sauron, but as Sauron was regathering his power (still recovering from his defeat when he lost his ring 3000 years earlier), and he took station in Dol Goldur, people didn’t yet understand the mysterious personage there was Sauron, but took to calling him the Necromancer instead. In the real world, when Tolkien wrote The Hobbit in 1937 he had not formed the LOTR story yet and had not developed the Sauron character. “The Necromancer” was just some offscreen bad guy used as a plot device to pull away Gandalf from Thorin’s company so that the dwarves would get into trouble. Tolkien later retconned The Necromancer as an alias for the returning Sauron.

These films definitely have a different feeling than the LOTR movies. Part of that is budget cuts, but part is because the Hobbit book was actually written for a younger audience. It’s geared towards kids. That’s why there’s less blood, the action scenes are sillier as opposed to dramatic and truly terrifying, etc.

Morgoth created the Dragons as a secret weapon against the Elves in the First Age. The first of these was known Glaurung the Golden, Father of Dragons, flightless but possessed of a terrible cunning and fiery breath. Before he was full grown, Glaurung grew sick of waiting and went forth to attack the Elves who were maintaining the Siege of Angband, burning the plains of Ard-Galen and the Elvish settlements therein, but since he was not at his full strength, he ended up being driven back by Prince Fingon and his archers. Glaurung's essentially teenage defiance displeased Morgoth as it let his enemies know that he had more than Orcs in his arsenal. The biggest dragon of all time, Ancalagon the Black, was so large that when Earendil slew him and cast his corpse upon the peaks of Thangorodrim (three volcanoes that Morgoth had built his fortress of Angband under), he crushed them utterly. Smaug is an insect comparatively. After the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age where Morgoth was defeated, most of his dragons were also slain, but some few fled, journeying eastward to the far northern wastes of Middle-Earth (as Beleriand to the west had sunk into the sea). Over time, they bred, but becoming smaller and smaller with each generation without the influx of dark power from their lost Master. Since they had such a lust for gold, and the lands to the south were mainly the lands of the Dwarves, they raided southward and destroyed the Dwarven Kingdoms where they could, taking their treasure hoards for their own. Some also attacked the lands of the Men who dwelt in the northeast of Middle-Earth as well, but there were some who fought back, and the numbers of these fire-drakes slowly dwindled throughout the Third Age. Smaug is considered the last of the great dragons, although it is theorized by Gandalf that some few lesser species survived into the Fourth Age, whereupon they slowly became extinct.

Besides being greedy for gold, the Dragons in Tolkien are also incredibly intelligent and can sense magic. But they are also Very, very Vain... And love to tell anyone they stalk how great, perfect and powerful they are. Kind of a big Character flaw.... They were "Created" by Sauron's Master ; the Evil Valar, Melkor, who is also called Morgoth. and are on a near par with Sauron, the Balrogs or the Wizards, in their own dragon might.

You missed out on Gandalf finding Thrain in Dol Goldur, which means you are watching the theatrical versions. Oh, well... A lot of the really fantastic dialogue in this movie and the next one is verbatim from the book, even though a lot of the complexity of the book has been taken out. A necromacer is a wizard that deals with the dead - including being able to raise the dead and command them. When sauron reappears in middle earth he appears as a necromancer, which raises suspicion because a necromancer is, by definition, an evil calling, so the white council (Galadriel, Elrond, Saruman, Gandulf - and i think, Rhadagast) is formed to try to found out more about him. He appears in the Greenwood at the old elf fortress of Dol Goldur and evil things begin appearing in the Greenwood, which becomes known as Mirkwood. Because Gandalf suspects the necromancer is Sauron, he wants to get rid of Smaug because Smaug is super powerful and in alliance with Sauron would destroy the east, where the dwarves and other men live. I wont say too much more because it would be a spoiler but when Mordor rises again, Orc and Easterling armies under Sauron's command attack the dwarves, and the elves, including rivendell and Loth Lorien - which is why those people dont appear in the Lord of the rings at the end battle.

Sauron disguised himself as the necromancer, because he wanted to hide his true self until he had regained most of his strength. After the ring was cut from his finger some 3000 years before, he lost his physical form, and it took him many hundreds and indeed thousands of years to get at least some kind of physical form back, as well as his power. It's worth noting though that aftet the ring had bedn cut from his finger, he was never anywhere near as strong as he had been when he had the ring. According to the book lore, the ringwraiths either just faded, or hid until he regained his strength. They were never buried in tombs. Their power was directly related to his.

🤦♀️Aww……damn dudes, why are y’all watching the theatrical version tho!? Maybe it’s not on purpose? If it is on purpose…why then?🤷♀️ I mean like yea, I know…it’s not like the end of the freaking world oss but imo you are definitely doing yourself a disservice in this particular case, that’s all. But oh well, either way I’m just stoked to see you guys react to this one as it’s by far my favorite of the trilogy and I’m sure that I’m not even remotely on my own in that thought! Cause I mean like seriously…there are so, sooo many reasons why it’s the best one out of the trilogy! But if I had to pick a top/favorite thing that just puts this movie so far above and beyond the others…I’d have to say that the absolute best part is…of course *Smaug*!!! Why?(tho idk why anyone would actually feel the need to ask such a thing in the first place…unless they’ve never seen the movie I guess🤷♀️if so…WTF are you even doing here, go watch it immediately ffs!🤦♀️😤😅) well, all I’ll say is that…imo he is the absolute BEST dragon ever put to screen, period! Sorry(not sorry) end of story! Try and change my mind? Don’t bother😂 But…regardless of the fact that I need not have to explain anymore about why he is so amazingly portrayed…nonetheless I do still want to give props where they are most definitely due…so I will say that, for as freaking awesome as Smaug looks in this movie…what truly seals the deal and makes him so damn awesome and memorable is…… THAT VOICE!!! Like FFS it’s brilliant y’all!🥹I mean no joke, I got full body goosebumps the first time he spoke! I actually saw it in theaters when it came out and HOLY SHIT my dudes I swear the bass in his voice felt like it legitimately rattled my damn brain ffs! 😱😳😵💫 Now look…I knew it was gonna be great as I heard that the absolute legend that is Benedict Cumberbatch was going to be voicing Smaug (and motion capture aswell😉👍) and all…but omfg it was beyond amazing hearing it and seeing it all come together was actually somewhat shocking to see/hear just how great and seamless it all was, especially for back then…hell, the fact that it still holds up and even surpasses some of the stuff that comes out now…it’s crazy to me that it still gives me goosebumps sometimes with a good set of headphones!(try it) But anyways…loved the reaction (as always 😉👍) my dudes!

They constructed an open-sided barrel for the camera to see into, sat each dwarf actor in it in turn, and dumped real fish on top of them. It was one of the most unpleasant things they had to do for filming. 😄 Of course, the more fanciful shots on the river were green screen composites and/or CGI ("Legolas standing on one Legolas" 😂), but quite a bit of the barrel ride was practical. Stunt men rode down the roughest parts, while closer shots were of the actors. Even some of the actor shots were through pretty rough waters.

Bombor outran everyone because the actor is a runner, and wore running shoes instead of the costume shoes. For that reason you don't see them much below the waist for that scene. These movies you have to watch extended edition for the proper story. It doesn't matter as much for An Unexpected Journey but this one and Battle of Five Armies it's absolutely essential to watch Extended not Theatrical. You miss out on an EPIC scene if you don't watch extended for BOFA and you won't understand it if you don't watch extended for this one. The love triangle between elves and dwarf is ludicrous. Nowhere in the vast writings of JRR Tolkien did dwarves and elves ever intermarry or procreate. In fact, Elves and Men were created by Illuvatar, but Dwarves were created by Aule instead. I think this would make it impossible for crossbreeding. I also don't like the idea of making some of the dwarves more "human" and "better looking" to facilitate this farce. I read that everyone on set was opposed to the love interest but the producers did it anyway. Rant over lol. Carry on. I still love ya'lls reaction!
