Ned Beatty's speech, apart from the obvious performing value, is a scene that should be remembered as a great gift for humanity. No wonder they weren't allowed to shoot this inside NYSE...

That fact it was rejected by the corporate temple shows how powerful this scene is. A Shakespearian monologue of our times.

Also in the movie is Lance Hendrickson who plays one of the network lawyers going over the contacts with the terrorists in the Cathy Cronkite scene. He previously appeared in Dog Day Afternoon and later in The Right Stuff and Aliens. Hendrickson was illiterate when he started acting and here he is in Network spewing out complicated (and accurate) contract jargon.

Louis and Max's scene of marital dissolution was, in my opinion, the most play-like scene where even though the acting is a bit over the top, it speaks to the level of things that never get said in situations like that - the intensity of the dialogue is a stand in for the internal emotional turmoil that must be evoked and foisted upon the audience. If you have ever been in a violent breakup you'll understand that the ability to speak properly disintegrates into speechless anger that degrades into physical violence.

This is a fascinating series. It really demonstrates what is necessary to produce excellent films. Very well done, Tyler. This being said, I cannot for the life of me understand that one, single dislike (as of 2/14/19). What person would be so ignorant as to dislike such an intelligent, thoughtful series? They must have clicked on this video by mistake, thinking they were actually going to watch some low-brow garbage and instead of just moving on to something more along their own gutter level of intelligence, decided to leave their mark -- a dislike. I can't think of any other explanation for this.

BTW, you meant to say that the winter romance scene was originally preceding the Max and Diana getaway scene - but I knew what you meant. As for the overdub of emeritus years, the specific problem with the audio is that the overdub doesn't have any room tone. As a musician and producer this jumped out at me right away, and what I never understood is why they didn't just take a Nagra and record the dub in a room with the same mic setup.

Thanks for these NETWORK shorts! Sorry to be a nitpicker, but misspellings gnaw at me and force me to act. When Robert Duvall is yelling at Faye about Mr. Jensen's anger about Beale's blowing the whistle about the loan, some silly bunny doing the sub-titles has Duvall yelling "Two billion dollars isn't peak; it's the wrath of God!" I wish Cheyevsky were alive to see the state of modern American television. He'd be proud how he called it back in '76. It's hard to pick a single favourite scene but Ned Beatty's monologue has to be high in that consideration. If the film was played more straight it would look embarrassingly out of place, especially when he shouts: " You. Will. Atone. " It takes on a very Shakespearean quality in tone and performance. It is meant to scare that 💩 out of Howard Beale. I imagine that a modern audience will find it very silly, but it fits within the reality of the film. Anything else would have diminished the effect. The film is not much of an exaggeration to what is around today. Now it is time for a sequel.wherein the anchors at Fox State News devolves into an all-out civil war.

Marlene Warfield, New York-born and -raised theatrical actress, was terrific as Laureen Hobbs, the young U.S. Communist Party apparatchik (modeled at least in part on Angela Davis) who runs interference between the Old Left and the '70s-era media-savvy revolutionaries. She has more screen time than Straight, and deeply deserved at least a supporting actress nom if not the actual award (racism?). And both Duvall and Beatty in their respective roles deserved the supporting actor award.

According to Dave Itzkoff's book, they originally hired Roberts Blossom. It's really hard to imagine him in the role (probably because he's usually known for playing crazy old men). No Small Parts did a fantastic episode on Blossom. Here's the full quote from page 119 of Itzkoff's book: "Roberts Blossom, who was originally cast for the role, had been cut loose in early January after Chayefsky and Lumet disagreed over his performance."
