I have been buying KNO3 from Duda Diesel. They have it from pounds to 50 lbs to pallet loads.

Great video thanks for the lesson. I'm going to try to reproduce a way to get potassium nitrate from nature following a process from the fox fire books on how they produced potassium nitrate back in the mountains of Appalachia because if this country keeps going in the direction its going a person will be able to buy anything so it will have to be up to us to make everything we need to put food on the table

When I recrystillize potassium nitrate, I use 2 cups of water and 3 cups of nitrate bring water to a boil and add the nitrate... The nitrate will desolve without much more heating, then I pore it through a coffee filter and this is usually done in the winter in minnesota so it doesn't take long to cool down.. you get big crystals by using more water. Just don't use too much water.. the white particals that are stuck to the inside of the pan have only a small amount of nitrate the rest is a large amount of anti caking agent and some calcium carbonate .. the last batch that I did was 10 pounds of potassium nitrate and 1.5 gallons of water after running this through a couple of coffee filters there was nothing floating on the top of the water and was crystal clear the crystals that formed were very large.. this is the way I've been getting the best results, this is what works for me. Just my opinion on a very good topic that you just shared.. THANKS..

To the Guy who said you can't Weigh Black Powder. You couldn't be more wrong . I have 2 Lee Dipper sets , The Old Red set from 50 years ago and they current larger Metric(CC ) Yellow set and they both have listing for the weight conversion based on the Powder Granulation ( Fg, FFg ,FFFg, FFFFg ). They volumetric measures we all use are only an approximation of weight based on Modern Factory Powder . Weighing charges will give you more Uniformity from shot to shot also this helps compensate for variations in home made Powders and shows us where we need to improve our Technique change carbon source etc. Lame Beaver is Correct. The same thing goes with Smokeless Powder Weigh for Precision but a correctly set Powder Measure will speed thing up when loading larger quantities of Ammo.

I hope you will show if any performance difference between using BP made from recrystallized vs out of the bottle Spectricide KNO3 in actual BP firearm DJ

Interesting video. I enjoyed the process and will try this myself. I went to the Spectricide website and looked at the Safety Data Sheet for the stump remover and it does show that it is greater than 94 percent potassium nitrate. That would indicate that there are more impurities than you would like for making your black powder and your process would be beneficial if using the Spectricide. I thought you might find that interesting. Thanks for your videos. Jack

If they changed the chemicals in it, it will be on the ingredients label. I know the old label said potassium nitrate.

@@lamebeavertradingco.1642 Legally they have to list it for poison control. On mine the label on the back is folded and you have to peel it back for ingredients and it does state potassium nitrate. If they substituted something else it would have to be on the list.

I started making powder about 3 months ago. I bought Hi-yield the first batch. It did NOT work lol. I found the spectracide and made a few batches with that and it worked just fine. I buy the pure stuff from Amazon now, but I have the spectracide for backup. Actually pucking while watching tonight 😁

Add to yesterday's comments.. I am ashamed to have forgotten to mention that shirt is perfect.. Just a thought, and for fun, if you do a recrystallization of the potassium nitrate, you did yesterday you will see the difference between the first and second.. I have seen that the second time nothing seems to float on the surface and is much clearer in solution. I did notice you used 200 ml of water to a pound of stomp remover that would be a super saturated solution, add an extra 100 ml for the crystals to have time to grow.. potassium nitrate is almost insoluble in water at 33 degrees that means the solution will be almost potassium nitrate free when removed from the crystals at 33 to 36 degrees.. I also have a question for you. Cap and ball revolves 1851, 1858 and 1860 which of these would be the best to purchase as a reproduction and for shooting reliability... THANKS again your helping me think differently...

Just noticed your comment. If you are just starting out with Cap and Ball revolvers, I would recommend the 58 Remington. Remington's are not known for cap sucking. What caliber are you interested in?

An Old Food Dehydrator works for drying your product when the Weather doesn't cooperate The first time I tried using Lead for tumbling to break up the KNO3 Prills it left my KNO3 badly contaminated with lead .I went out and bought a small Electric Coffee Grinder to Powder the KNO3 . I was able to salvage the contaminated batch by the boiling water and re-crystallization method . I've also learned some sources of Sulfur can be cleaned this was because sulfur doesn't dissolve in water it will stay in the filter but the clay will run out and discarded.

If you just let it sit after mixing with a large volume of water the sulfur tends to settle out faster than the bentonite clay. Had not thought of trying a filter. Thanks.

If you check the MSDS for that product it should say the percentage of the components it contain, well thats what it should be. Recristalization is the easy way to go to purify soluble salts.

It's possible most of the impurities in the Spectricide went i to suspension in the water and are not the particulate matter you caught in the cloth. Maybe it requires several purification cycles?

Has anyone used melted KNO3 for bluing steel? Supposedly, it makes a nice dark "European blue."

I have heard there is more than one way to skin a cat, and know there is more than one way to remove a stump. And there is more than one kind of thing sold as “stump remover” and some of those things are not potassium nitrate and some are. Black powder is mostly potassium nitrate so impurity there is going to have a bigger impact on the final product than a similar per cent impurity in one of the other ingredients. A spec of dirt is not going to make much difference but if 10% is sodium nitrate or calcium nitrate or potassium chloride or sodium chloride(salt) it will still look white and not like dirt, and can still make a clear solution in water but that 10% will have an impact on the final product. The point of recrystallizing is to try and separate the potassium nitrate from all those other various salts that might be present.

I have a didgital version of same wheather guage. You Need to Know. You have excellent humidity, dry as a popcorn phart, in my home area cold at night lowest for the day, 65% humidity at 70 deg with very cloudy skys. "I dry" my kno3 in my (wife's) oven at 300 on a cokie sheet, then store dried with desicant in air tight containers bulk and for each batch. "I do" Soft, RO water. read the bottles? "my black bottles" say "in fine print" their chem make up. Your dogs! alert sounds, sent mine! on a full farm security alert, and full pack seach and guard with their dog cat stealth at the 6 and 3/9. My shirt should maybe say "Watch This"? "I got my dogs" TWICE!!

So one would have to get spectaside brown bottle? Is their a way to make a primer compound like we see in rimfire cartridges? I was all pumped to try a project but I can't afford to waste money. Probably should just keep investing in rimfires

Why not do a video debunking any one who states just don't use it because it's not "Pure" enough to make gun powder. If you have been following this channel you will have seen I do purchase it in 5 lb bags in it's purest form, and have shown my source.
