The fact that he chose to prioritize the design of the watch first and then the mechanism it's just mind blowing. Here's a good example of a watchmaker who understood that the design of the dial is what matters the most not the other way around. Roger smith chose the hard way and that what makes him one of the greatest watchmaker in the world.

This is probably a classic neophyte question: are there any watchmakers who make a mechanical watch that includes complications that automatically allow for February and the 30/31 day months? And the leap year? Thanks in advance.
@BarkandJack4 жыл бұрын
There are 2 complications to check out. Annual calendars will run the course of the year and take into consideration the correct number of days in the month. But they don’t track leap years. Perpetual calendars will run until the year 2100 where the leap year changes. So any perpetual calendar will do what you want. 👍🏻

I'd love to hear his opinions on other watch brands. As someone who has access to the caliber of watches he himself creates, what draws him to an Explorer? If it's the simplicity then has he ever considered (or even tried) creating something less complex, like a field watch.

His cheapest watch is GBP 150,000. Not sure how competitive it is. He's Britain's answer to FP Journe. But for me I'd rather buy 2 x FP Journe;)
@BarkandJack4 жыл бұрын
He’s miles above FPJ. The process is far more intimate, and the fact his waitlist is 5 times that of FPJ, highlights the difference. FPJ watches are great, but RS is playing in a different league.
@greaterbayareahero14014 жыл бұрын
@@BarkandJack Did you do a review of the Journe Factory? Journe has 3-5 times his staff numbers hence the reason why the wait list is longer for Roger;) Roger was born in 1970. There is no way he has done more than Journe. Just look at Journe's awards compared to Rogers. Even though Roger had a good teacher George Daniels it's not saying much if you don't have too many awards or recognition. Journe has achieve more though one paper. I assess them based on not just technical skills but an all rounder. Journe definitely has more style and elegance in his watches. Somehow when I look at Roger's watches it leaves me thinking that the finish is just not complete. I don't know what it is. Anyway I respect what Roger has achieved and his OBE and it's all subjective. But if we compare on paper Journe trumps here. From my point of view George Daniels is the man. If Roger can take George Daniels work of on the co-axiel escapement and move this forward into something more outstanding and unique and gets the award on this, then I take my hat of to that;) Look I am not trashing Roger Smith. I respect him as a watch maker but by the same token, I think if you are comparing him to others and saying he is the best watch maker in the world, a lot of people may not agree with this claim.
