here is a simple thing which i used to follow when i was learning to drive : just do follow RPM meter. i used to change the gear when needle was about to touch 2000 RPM.

Add extra 5-10 kph for each gear while driving on uphill roads... For example, for i20 elite Petrol (VTVT Engine), following way should be used for changing gears on uphill roads... 1st 13-15 kph max 2nd 30-35 kph max 3rd 45-50 kph max 4th 65 kph max 5th As per your wish... Not a thumb rule, per se. However, this way, you will not shift more often on long uphill stretches and will save fuel. Tried and tested. Pervasive fact: Engine sound tells it all.

I also had the same problem of sudden acceleration while shifting to 2nd gear But to fix it, the speed should the around 20 to 30 km/h and lift the clutch a little slow and then accelerate

Gear shift hamesha speed se nhi RPM dekh k karni chahiye, har gari ka gear ratio and coordination same nhi hota. Aisa bhi hota h ki koi gari 2nd gear and 2000 RPM mein 40 kmph tak pahuch jaye.
