I am in the process of doing this to my e39 530i 2002 m54 engine I'm going to install new vacume hoses ,manfold gaskets injector kit new throtle body belts vanos seals head gasket oil pan gasket , etc..my peoject is full restoration.....I'm pro painter by trade but man this my first bmw and i love the way it drives and handles!!! keep up the good work i enjoy your vids,welcome to cali.

One thing I would add to your disassembly and this is from personal experience; before taking off the main drive belt, you want to loosen the water pump pulley bolts or the power steering pulley bolts otherwise you may end up having a difficult time taking those off depending how rusted they are or how stuck they are in there so having the belt there helps hold it in place without damaging it and if you try using a vice or something like that to take it off later you may end up managing those pulleys because they are plastic and fragile, especially if they're very old.

Man, I've been wanting to see a video like this on step by step for everything on the engine for the longest, of course it's different/easier with it out but it gives us an idea where things are. Could you do a video on how to keep your bolts, nuts and other parts in order when doing something this big? I'd love to rebuild my engine but I'm afraid cause then I won't know where all the different bolts and buts go and get them mixed up.

What you can do is get a piece of cardboard or foamboard and label each bolt as you take it out and put it through the board. Or keep bags for each part that you remove and label the bag. There are also bolt containers that you can buy. Good luck and thanks!

Just FYI, but these M54 engines use a thermostat that is controlled by the DME. The DME heats a wax element that allows the thermostat to open earlier or later.

I was a little surprised to see an upgraded (metal impeller) water pump come out of an engine with a cooked head! What happened to this car? Blown expansion tank?

It was one of the other hoses that was split.

I don't see why they wouldnt work fine. And for sure when I start rebuilding the engine ill be sure to go over the wiring thoroughly.

Is there a way to know if you should change your termostat and water pump? The car get to operating tempetur in normal speed, like 4-5 km of driving normal. Heard they are importent to change

For the thermostat you will get a check engine light if it is bad. But if the car is overheating definitely replace both. I suggest refreshing the cooling system every 100k or less, that includes hoses, water pump, thermostat, expansion tank, and if possible the hard plastic lines under the intake manifold.

My car has a secondaryy air injector leak in both banks and my check valve hose going to the back of the engine is cracked if I replace that will I be okay?

If the hose is cracked then replacing it should take care of the light. Make sure your pump is running when the car is cold.
