My little Ackie absolutely loves getting scratches... like to the point where she's obnoxious about it. She likes to come out and explore my desk while I'm drawing or working on the computer, and about every 15-20 minutes she comes over to see what I'm doing, and if I don't acknowledge her almost immediately she starts nudging my hand or forearm until I pet her and give her a chin scratch.

Great stuff and thanks for sharing! This is helpful for some research I'm doing (a story with dragons) and understanding how lizards think and behave has helped a great deal. Also. So cute! If I could house a few monitors at home, I absolutely would!

What could block a water monitor reaching full size? Stress? Food given? Cage size?

+New England Reptile Distributors Right on, very respectable how much care you put towards your pets. I went to order my water monitor from BACKWATER REPTILE but cancelled my order after finding out they are not really know for great reviews. I am going this next weekend to the Reptile Super Show, hoping to find a reputable breeder there to get my new buddy! Do you happen to recommend any breeders that might be there? (I would order one from you but dont have $500 to spend more in the $150-200 range)

m r if you can’t afford $500 for a water monitor, this species is definitely not for you. That’s just a fraction of the expense of keeping such an animal. Water monitors grow very large and require a ton of food, big custom enclosures, costly heating and lighting equipment, specialized veterinary care, etc.

How long do you keep them in this simple environment? I've had my quince for 4 months, made a normal enclosure and he hides constantly. I know I'm not supposed to uncover him so if I switch to this how do I know when I can switch it back? This change will stress him out so I want to make sure its ok to do. I stck with only positive experiences and trying not to stress him. He hides when he's out and I come in room. I try to do that slowly. Then I will sit down and not look st him, I try to stay below him etc. Hes in a from opening enclosure, with water , dirt etc.

That's not true because I have a Meyers Parrot and she loves scratches and to be held and cuddled!!

Hi, I was wondering if you thought a NERD water monitor would be a good choice for a first monitor lizard? By no means a first lizard or reptile but first monitor. If the person has a passion for reptiles and did a lot of research about care and taming, over a year? So the person definitely knows what they're getting themselves into.
