Many, many years ago I saw this in a Road and Track on a bumper sticker: Q: Why do the English drink warm beer? A: Because they use Lucas refrigerators. Anyone who's ever owned an English car will get that joke. Your comment about electrical issues brought back this memory.

@@1959dud Yes, I remember many years ago - around the end of the '70's - when a friend of mine who owned two classic Jags showed me his two checkbooks. He showed me a brown one and said that this was for the cars, then he showed me a blue one and told me that was for everything else. He introduced me to Broken Kitty, the best place to get parts and mods for old Jags. Electronics and conversion kits to replace the straight-6 and the V-12 with a GMC 350 cu.in. crate engine. Most British cars follow the old saying we used to have when we crashed our motorcycles: "You'll heal, the bike takes money." Just substitute "bike" with "British vehicle".

Side note. Using a brake flare tool. Put a small flare on the end of the fuel hard line. Will keep a hose frame slipping off under pressure. One clamp will do after that.

Hello Steve I notice that when you were cranking the engine the oil pressure warning lamp remained alight,this age of discovery as a protective circuit built in that stops the engine running without the required oil pressure if it's been left for a long time it's lost pressure at the oil pump do please prime the pump before you go chasing around all the other systems Good luck with it.

A permanent rubber hose. Hmm. The British sometimes made interesting engineering decisions. I used to own a Ducati. The Italians also at times subscribed to this approach. It was a fun bike to work on. Thanks Steve.

Fun fact: if you have the coil pack set up instead of a distributor (sounds like it), it is the same set up as the Series 2 disco. Having as many Land Rovers as you do I assume you have RAVE. I will say, prime the oil pump on these old buick/rover V8's. Cam and Lifters are made of cheese. Check N/P safety switch, oil pressure switch, immobilizer switch, and crank position sensor. Man I missed that start up ding of a D1.

Go to the start - Powers & grounds from the fuse box to each of the components that are involved with ignition. Then move on from there to the ECU.

Keep the disco vids coming ! Love to see you work through the problems! 🇨🇦👍
@aikengabrielsen25142 жыл бұрын
A no-spark situation is 90% certain the coils. The disco units (and GEMS rr has the same) are a lot easier to do - I put longer bolts in place of the lower mounts on my Thor coils so with the upper bolts removed, I could just slip the coils up and tilt them back. With a head gasket change annually (my engine has the so-called 'porous block' issue), that saves 20-30 minutes each time I need to get the top end off. The way to go is test a couple of cylinders from 1 coil pack and then the other. That's 1 6 5 8 and 2 3 4 7 so if you have bad spark on 4 or 8 of those then that's culprit #1. HT leads fail of course as the factory leads are so-so, but it's rare and you wont see 4 or 8 plugs with no spark, just the odd one or two. At least with the GEMS system, the coil packs are cheap!
@aikengabrielsen25142 жыл бұрын
I assumed before this that you've not got knackered plugs and that tyou have fuel getting to the rail...
@aikengabrielsen25142 жыл бұрын
PS: put some rust converter on the battery tray asap - also on the rear door shuts and the boot tray - as it looks close to unsavable and you do not want to be fixing rotted panels. There are guys stamping replacement sheet parts for discos, but better to stop the original metal getting that far that it needs to be cut out. Welding in replacement sheet is a pain in the bum on them as it's pretty thin and even with a decent TIG welder as blow-through is hard to avoid. Ofc I am an amateur welder so that might be my incompetence...

Hi Steve - good try, at least you solved the fuel issue and that's no small feat! Concerning the ability to start, my experience with XDs is nil, but you touched on the crank sensor and I would check there. All my LRs used traditional distributors, with an attached amp module. The amps they've made for the past decade are very unreliable right out of the box. However, it sounds like the XD's setup does not use this method. Best wishes getting rid of the electrical gremlins!

First off: with no FOB the immobilizer is stopping your crank and/or spark/fuel. There is a EMK code u can flip with the drivers door key 1515 or 5151 is the 'Dealer Code' (not sure which, but ie unlock once lock 5 times repeat) and that will get past a LOT of issues. Next check other plug wires for spark, but lets assume their all dead. Check under the engine for Rats chewing wires on back of engine sensors. BUT whatever is stopping the power to the fuel pump is ALSO killing ignition; makes me think immobilizer! Also the Neturel/Park switch can stop cranking as well, might help to wiggle the shifter on no crank, but the hammer trick tells otherwise.. FYI, you probably have to type the 1515 code into the door EACH START! Why I ended up getting used FOBs and paid dealer to program ECU to them. Hope this helps man! 96 disco 1 here
@ThisWeekWithCars2 жыл бұрын
The FOB does work and the immobilizer is not the problem.

Why not throw a little Ospho or some other kind of rust converter at that battery tray? Half an hour with a wire wheel and some rust converter would probably work wonders. Or is that a rabbit hole leading to a full restoration? lol

No genius on land rovers here, but when you were cranking over there was no indication on the tachometer. I know on old 90s fords the Crank Position Sensor can be most easily diagnosed by seeing if you register any rpm on the tachometer during crank

I just had to replace the fuel pump on my 1995 D1. Much easier for me. I had a plastic ring, not metal, so it rotated with just a few taps. Also replaced the fuel filter. My car has no rust, thank heavens, and has a reliable distributor. The only expensive issue I have had is a new alternator. Mine has about 105K miles on it and I have owned it 16 years. Fuel mileage is 10 MPG. :(

Although Steve asks for help I am never sure he needs it! Seems to have the whole thing ironed out although how he remembers whether he checked for a spark or not is anyones guess. English , American or made in Japan I’m not sure any electrical system is designed to last without attention as long as some of these vehicles. Honest John in the Telegraph used to say about 8 years for most cars and the scrappage scheme we had a while back gave you £2k for a 10 year old car I think. Not sure anyone builds cars to keep out mice either?
@robt21512 жыл бұрын
I rarely buy any car that is less than 8 years old and I usually get at least another ten years use from them (except for my '84 V8 Defender which I have had for 29 years, mouse-free)
