Thanks Mike Time to quit while your ahead? To sell or not to sell, that is the question? If it's running good, keep it till it starts giving trouble, then get rid of it! To me, the electrical comparison was comparitively in range. It obviously was the mechanical part that that caused all the problems. Reminds me of a 71 AMC Hornet with a "double acting" fuel pump problem many years ago. Wound up to be a worn cam lobe for the pump. Good job Mike, hope this engine lasts a long time!

The answer to a lot of questions is that the high pressure pump control is timed. The beginning or the end of the pump stroke is being used. That’s how the pressure is controlled. In live data you can often see if cam timing is correct or how much it is out of spec. Because it is important to know for the engine ecu to control the high pressure pump. Somewhere in measurement group 90-94. I hope this usefull.

Nice score with that engine, Mike! Thing looked mint! Glad you got that nightmare behind you now. Problem is, if you sell it, what kind of problems will you run into with a replacement vehicle? That's the conundrum I have whenever I think I need another vehicle, lol. Especially anything built this century ... We've had our 34 year old Grand Marquis for 17 years this past January, & the Silverado for 13 now. The 26 year old Volvo 940 is our newest addition to the fleet at 5 years of ownership. I'm keeping all of them, because, you know the saying, "Better the devil you know than the one you don't." ... And because I can't afford anything built before the 1973 model year. If I had my way, my whole fleet would be run with carburetors and HEI. 😂 Anyway, great follow up, Mike - thanks for sharing. 👍🍻

@@GoTechTraining - Ahh you young fellas don't know what you're missing! 😜 I've been the same way as far as cars go, except for one time when I bought a brand new Silverado in 2007. Biggest mistake of my life! I was better off driving stuff from the 70's through the early 90's as far as reliability goes. That Silverado has been a lemon since the day it left the showroom! I bought new to try and save myself the aggravation of frequent repairs. HA! This thing was the worst vehicle I've ever owned in my life in that regard - instead of wrenching on it, I was sitting in a dealership for hours for warranty work! I'd rather be doing it myself! Will be the LAST new vehicle I ever buy. My next "new" vehicle will be pre-1973 model year. 😁

@@GoTechTraining - Well the AFM problem is widespread with those, but that's just one problem of many. I had brake pulsation on the test drive with just over 40 miles on the clock, trim was falling off the driver's door at that same time, lower ball joints made it only 38k miles, uppers 50k, along with the hub bearings, & 1 strut, & started burning oil. Front axle started leaking around that time, too. Kept throwing "Service 4x4 System" right out of the gate - dealer kicked that can right out of warranty, and I got stuck replacing the 4x4 switch at 55k, then my rear differential's spider gears shed most of their teeth off at 97k. And don't get me started on the paint and body metal strength. I tapped a little sapling in the yard with the right rear of the bumper when it was just 2 years old, and that cost me $2,200 in repairs. It not only bent the bumper, but tweaked the box and creased it right over the rear wheel. Had to go on the frame machine for an hour to straighten that out. When I had it all apart to replace the bumper components, the amount of rust I saw was frightening. 2 years old! Chevy's slogan used to be, "Like a Rock" - today it should be, "Like a beer can". 😟

is the pump maybe damaged inside( bypassing/piston/diaphragm, causing a low tension follower chatter and over-pressure break down of the coil clearances, making current rise? sometimes my mind goes off the wall, but sometimes that off the wall is very close to the real issue

How would the pressure regulator pwm ,bad pump vs new because of engine fuel demand. ?? I would have liked to seen the Regulator comparison along with pump comparison.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Over Load, the "pump" which is what I was calling it, acts as the regulator. It's a solenoid that allows the fuel into the rail. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

@@GoTechTraining can you activate this regulator with the scan tool to bleed off fuel . Not sure if VW gives this option. Never worked on this vehicle before, where some other vehicles have regulator after pump at end of rail.

Ok I have some input: On my engine (BPY), my cam follower was worn COMPLETELY THROUGH; as in a giant hole where the surface used to be. This meant that the cam lobe was making direct contact with the end of the fuel pump plunger (imagine just removing the cam follower and putting everything back together). The camshaft lobe wore down the fuel pump plunger quite a bit. After all this, I still did not have a check engine light for low fuel pressure. This tells me the fuel pump was able to meet demand, even with quite a bit of the mating material removed. I’m not a mechanic, but I’m wondering if there was a problem with your solenoid? Or maybe the fuel pressure sensor? Any thoughts appreciated.
@GoTechTraining

@@GoTechTraining I’ve already replaced the camshafts, fuel pump and follower. Didn’t scan it at the time, but I do remember I didn’t have a MIL. Would be interesting data. My bearings weren’t as bad as yours, luckily. Even measured clearances with Plastigage. Thanks.

Hi I have a 2007 Audi A4 2.0t and I have a p2293 and I have a real rough idle for about 3-4 min and then it will stall out. The idle is going up and down and the fuel rail pressure is sticking around 1800 psi. Replaced the fuel pump twice, gotten new sensors, replaced the purge valve and replaced the camshaft and follower. Still having the problem. Any ideas would considering we’ve replaced almost everything. Thank you.

I've never seen a tamper resistant cover on a computer connector before. Maybe they put it there thinking that the aftermarket would come up with some plug-in power chip for the module and they wanted to prevent that from happening. In general, Volkswagen seems to do odd things for tamper prevention (triple square and 12-point bolts come to mind).

@andyeckel7195 4 жыл бұрын
throttle bottle ding ding ding. This was exact same thought. The VW “diesel gate” scandal that cost VW billions and darn near destroyed the company. It was not a deterrent against tuners, it is deterrent against EPA and other investigators / regulators from trying to reverse engineer PCM logic. For others reading this comment who may not be familiar with the massive scandal, try a Google search for “VW diesel-gate”. I used to work for a Big Oil company and we used this scandal as a learning case study to teach our employees about how corporate reputation can get ruined by this type of cheating. If I recall correctly, people including top executives went to prison for this.

I would suggest that you keep the car and put a lot more miles on it. Sometimes you gain a lot in automotive education by just enduring and experiencing first hand all the problems associated with a specific make, model, technology, etc. With your skill set you are more than capable of keeping ahead of anything the "fine German engineers" put into this vehicle.
