Hi gents, thanks for the content. I'm really enjoying this series. By no means a criticism whatsoever, in act, it's refreshing to see a professional company building a garden room for what it is and not over engineering it like it's some sort of multi story car park. The difference I've noticed are; No mot type 1 sub-base. No steel reinforcement. No insulating under/on slab as of yet. Screws and plugs (baseplate to slab) usually bolts with chemical fix. Joist size not suitable according to span table. No joist hangers for rafters. As I say, not digging u out at all. In fact, I'm in agreement with alot of ur methods, I think it would save alot of ppl plenty of money, and enjoying watching this build. Would u say that the answer to all of this is just simply... Yes, it's a lightweight garden room, not a two story extension? Thanks chaps.

Hi Nick, Thanks for the comment. I'll have to be quick as my tea is nearly ready!!! Concrete slab is basically a raft so even if part of the ground moved underneath the slab would be fine, you'd have to but about 100 tones on it to get it to sink!! No need to any sub base, over 50 years on construction in the family and we've never seen one sink. Not enough weight from a Garden Room or Shed. Base insulation video is to come, stay tuned! Fix a piece of 4x2 into concrete with one screw this way and try and pull it out, I bet you can't ;) If you do, fix 8 more into it like we have and I promise you it won't move. Doubled up 5x2 bolted are more than strong enough. Even with 2ft of snow the loads are spread over the whole deck and wall plates and will not flex enough to cause any danger. Joist hangers not needed for rafters. 50mm of screw depth into timber has a withdrawal force of nearly 180kg, we have 2 per joist so that's 360kg per joist at the front. We have 12 joists so that means you'd need 4.2 tones of wind to rip the roof off. I don't think that's ever happening on our 600mm overhang! And especially not in the uk where we don't have hurricanes. Thanks for watching the video and stay tuned to see how we put the rest together

@creategardenrooms
@creategardenrooms Жыл бұрын
Best to just double up 5x2’s and bolt them. 6x2 may flex a bit. 6x2 will be absolutely fine structurally but if you walk on it and it flexes you may risk popping the plasterboard at a later stage which would be a shame!

Is there any reason I couldn't use single 4x2 for the roof joists on a smaller build (5 x 2.5m)?
@creategardenrooms
@creategardenrooms 11 ай бұрын
No reason really other than it being a bit tight for insulation. It should be strong enough however you do run the risk of it flexing in the event of snow which could pop the plasterboard screws. Very unlikely though but just a thought 👍
@ramzanj2468
@ramzanj2468 6 ай бұрын
Why are you bolting together two joists to make thicker joist why not buy the correct thickness joist? Cost would be more with two bolted? Is there a reason to do it like this? I have done lots of building works and would not do this. Also on another video you did a floating floor but bolted down the osb boards to the concrete below that leaves no expansion contraction room... No need to screw down...
@Amansshed
@Amansshed 3 ай бұрын
I suppose it depends on your roof covering. mine is mental so I used singles as well.. starting to think il double them up when i put the rubber on due to weight of the boards..

hi steve dont know if anyone replied to your comment but this garden room wont need planning permission as the total square footage is less than 30m2 and the total height is under 2.5m meaning it can be built under permitted development

is there any worry with sole plate getting damp as it sits on the ground level? How far above the ground level is the slab height?
@creategardenrooms
@creategardenrooms 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! No chance of that happening at all. Concrete is normally about 4 inches above ground level and there is a DPM under the concrete and a DPC under the wall plate 👍
