What an interesting conversation. Kudos to Zevi for asking difficult questions and sticking to his guns. I would contest the point of the story that Rabbi Friedman uses towards the end of this video. Most Jews retain a childlike image of a protector God. Starting to put on Tefillin and wear Tzitzis in a time of crisis is very often likely to be an attempt to curry favour and protection from the same deity that caused the massacre in the first place BeHashgocho Protis BeArteinu HaKedoisho asher tomid einei Yahweh Elohecho etc.
