So today I finally got the heads back from the machine shop. I got back with them just before lunch and got right into putting it back together....after I ate. It is going pretty well.

A really great video JC.At last a decent length video out is so nice to sit and watch one of these than lots of short ones, also great to see a real time working video with steps to watch rather than this is what we did. Keep up the great videos as usual can't wait to see her run, Thanks for sharing

I've never seen that crank turning socket. Expensive little bastard, but I can see how useful it would be. It's on my list now. Actually could have used it yesterday when I was putting a timing chain driven water pump on a CX-9 3.7L No screwdriver slot in the alignment dowels for easy removal? That torque sequence isn't as bad as some I've seen. I broke two 1/2" breaker bars on step 5 of an early 6.0dsl, the ones that had heads that cracked under warranty. ^ Stage 1: Tighten bolts 1 through 10 to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.). ^ Stage 2: Tighten bolts 1 through 10 to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). ^ Stage 3: Tighten bolts in sequence 1 through 10, 90 degrees. ^ Stage 4: Tighten bolts in sequence 1 through 10, a second time, 90 degrees. ^ Stage 5: Tighten bolts in sequence 1 through 10, a third time, 90 degrees. ^ Stage 6: Tighten bolts 11 through 15 to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). ^ Stage 7: Tighten bolts 11 through 15 to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).

I wish i had all the machinery to fix my fucked v10. Either a lash adjuster or rocker is knocking. Had oil pressure fluctuations.

It kills me that you didn't change the oil pump when it was opened, i see you live dangerously 😂

this engine was oiling very well and had just had the oil pump and timing components replacement by the previous owner. the engine is still running very well today.

sometimes i get a little irritated with all the mamby panby hand holding that goes on these days. grab the head with your hands....you dont need surgical gloves you dont need purell ...just carry it over to the engine and put it on. then move on.

the bolt holes are not quite 1/2" deeper than the head bolts will reach. so there is no threat of that amount of oil hydro locking the bolt. also that oil is a full sythetic and is very thin. the mojority of it dripped off before it hit the hole. besides all that, this torque sequence was a 3 part and the threads are not sealed. i am sure as the bolts went in it spread the oil throughout the threads. i am very comfortable with the was it was done.

Cat tells you to turn the bolts like 2 flats or 3 flats I like Fords idea of 90 degrees it's easier

i prefer the simple old "torque to xx ft lbs" method.

Turning specific amount measured in degrees gives a more even clamping force
@j.c.smithprojects7 жыл бұрын
i dont know if i agree but i am sure there is a bunch of engineers who know better than i do.
@j.c.smithprojects7 жыл бұрын
it is only as even as the torque wrench's accuracy. torque to yield is about stretching the bolts. ironic that we used to avoid over tightened and stretching bolts and now it is a desired result.
@doublea5567 жыл бұрын
The bolts will stretch for old school stuff without the torque procedure using turning degrees. The torque procedure is just not designed to torque them to the limit of their elasticity. The later models using torque to yield bolts are designed for even clamping force across the head for better sealing. Torquing to a ft/lb spec can be uneven across the head just from the friction or dirty threads. BTW I wouldn't use that click style torque wrench for the turn 90degree steps I'm sorry. I don't mean to critique. I like your videos. I'm sure people would tear me apart doing some things

I don't believe that extensions change torque values. Maybe on an impact gun, but not hand tools.
@ashtonferrell17762 жыл бұрын
Yes, when you use an extension with a torque wrench, it will reduce the amount of torque on the bolts! 25 years diesel Technician master tech! The shorter the extension, the less you loose. The longer the more. Also depends on the type of extension. Chrome is actually harder than the impacts but impact extension reduce the loss of torque. If you do have to use an extension, use a good thick, shorter the better, impact extension! Been doing it for years!
