I am working on drawing plans for barndominium 2 story interior, post frame exterior. Could I go approximately 6 feet with a cantilever? Considering using “i” joists with a 15 foot span, no end wall on upper floor, it will be a loft with hand rail only. Thank you for posting valuable information in all your videos.

I'm actually just starting to look into doing this exact addition on my home. It will be my first time messing with 2nd story. I have done plenty of single story stuff. So a 2x12 @ 21' span would support a 2nd story bedroom? I was afraid I would have to get some kind of prefab joists.

How will the slope of the roof die into the new second story? I see this in San Diego and wonder how a sloped roof can die into a vertical wall without concern for water intrusion.

I have a home built in 1987 with gable roof. The entire house is built with 2x4s, including the attic. I'd like to put some 4x8 plywood up there so I can move around and insulate the attic ceiling instead of the floor. Do you think it's OK to have 3/4 inch plywood up there or should it be 1/2 inch? Sorry for confusing question.

People do it all the time and size usually doesn't matter for plywood as long as it's strong enough to support who ever goes up there.

I need to run a beam from the end of a bearing wall about 14 feet over to an exterior wall. The issue is, the beam at the exterior wall lands above a window header on the wall. The windows are 36” wide and have 2x12 headers but not sure if this is an issue or not.

You might need a larger window header, but I can't provide lumbers sizes.
