As an expat coming from the US, tasting Dutch foods and be a hit or miss. If living in the Netherlands has shown us anything it's that Dutch food is anything but bland. DUTCH CHEESE can be unique to say the least but unique doesn't mean bad...smelly maybe but not bad. I never expected such a wide range of unique cheeses to this part of the country but I can tell you this, Dutch cheese is some of the best in the world. So you can say, this is kind of a mini Dutch cheese review on the smelly and not so smelly. During the Dutch food taste test there were some hits and misses but we had some fun doing it! Life in the Netherlands as a foreigner with new food to explore has been great...If it ain't Dutch it ain't much! So here's my little living in the Netherlands vlog, I hope you enjoy it! The expat life is a great life and don't be afraid to try the unique Dutch foods available to you...you won't regret it!!

For drinks: old fashioned Dutch is anijsmelk. You can buy a package of De Ruyter anijsblokjes. Dissolve 1 in a glass of hot milk. There you have it!they don’t sell the anijsblokjes anymore, they changed to anijsstaafjes

crunch anise seedwith pestal& mortar then microwave in some milk. will do too. But if you can get the cubes by de Ruyter, it is easier. Not really a drink but really Dutch is Brinta. A pre steamed oatmeal for in hot milk to make a breakfast porridge. They cold variant now too. Old fashioned is to add brown sugar. We often add Brinta to pancake batter.

Compliments on both of you pronouncing Gouda, kaas and more. You did excellent in getting a good collection of typical Dutch cheeses you can buy everywhere. I keep dice sized cubes of old goat cheese in the freezer. I grate one when cooking. For that, I use a Microplane brand grater which looks like a wood file. Using this brand of graters with older cheeses is easy. They are about €20. If you feel like trying something new sometimes. Try a few from the Zuivelhoeve cheese franchise. There is one in Koningshoek mall in Maassluis. edit: typos

Indeed, some things are "acquired tastes" 😅 Friese Nagelkaas can be a very strong taste which you may have to get acquainted too a bit. It's like with olives, you may need a few passes before your brain rewires and gets fond of it. You can eat the nagels in the cheese. They're often very soft.

Smart too, because this way you get the best advice what Dutch food you should eat! As for the drinks: you really should try Chocomel, cold as well as hot (put some whipped cream on top of your hot Chocomel)). A very Dutch 'drink' is advocaat, if you like with whipped cream. Jenever is also very Dutch, and citroenbrandewijn.

Boerenkaas means it's from raw milk, unpasteurized. It's a strain on the producer because of higher hygiene requirements but it keeps the taste of the grass, the soil and the breed in the cheese. Some age well, some just get very sharp with old age and lack nuances, some are still very creamy at Jong Belegen, some are only great in some seasons. It's not that transparant but we have good cheeseshops to rely on. There is Boerenkaas in the supermarkets too but usually they might as well have pasteurized it. Stinky cheese is usually just that stinky because the stink builds up in the package. I often remove the package and let it ventilate in an open window for a few minutes. It's not like it will produce the same amount of stink while eating it.

As a (sort of) drink suggestion: Zwarte Kip Advocaat and maybe Tokkelroom. You can have them pure or with a dot of whipped cream. You "drink" them with a small spoon... And another "kruidenbitter": Muier Schipperbitter. Also an old and now barely used drink: Citroen jenever. This was a "Sunday" drink for women, they used a little glass with some sugar in it. Like an early Liquor.

My absolute favorite is "gras kaas" which translates to grass cheese. It's a seasonal cheese that almost tastes like butter made from the first milk cows give when they come out of the barn and eat fresh grass instead of hay. On another note, you should try white asparagus (also seasonal) which is a delicacy in spring in the South. It is serves and smothered in Hollandaise sauce or butter and pretty difficult to cook because you have to get it exactly right otherwise the asparagus are either undercooked or get extremely fiberess and unpleasant to eat.

In a few weeks (month maybe) the cows are going out in the meadows. The first milk made from that grass makes great cheese. Very young soft 'graskaas'. You can also try 'jonge boeren gatenkaas' a little bit nutty taste. You can eat cheese any way you like. I like the crust (right under the wax-layer) some people don't like it at all. When you want to try a very old cheese go for the 'black labels' Old Amsterdam, Old Rotterdam and that kind ;)

Sorry, meent tried. There are a lot of specialist cheeses in North Holland like messenklever (cheese hangs on to your knife), Friesland Kollumer (not from the supermarket). Friesland nagelkaas was originally made with skimmed milk, the cloves were added to give it some taste. Suggestion: you make a nice cheese plateau for dessert with cheeses from mild to strong (I take four or five). I love this with a dessert wine like Monbaziliac (I hope I spell this the right way). French btw. Enjoy all your experiments.

I really enjoy watching your video's, and love the Dutch food tasting episodes you two are doing. For your new beverages series I would like to suggest you to try Beerenburg. Beerenburg is a traditional Frisian liquor (but to be fair originaly from Amsterdam), made by adding herbs to jenever, with about 30% alcohol. You can drink it pure, but I would also suggest to drink Beerenburg mixed it with coke. Normally the ratio is 1:5, so 1/5 liquor, 4/5 coke. But if you find this too strong, you can of course adjust the ratio to your taste. Enjoy!

Great video again! Jenever (the original Gin) is the first one that i would suggest. FYI: The Dutch invented the distillery, the name Brandy comes from the Dutch word Brandewijn and the Dutch were the first to put Hop into beer. Making it essentially the beer we now all know and love. So you have to try some liqueurs of the brand Bols (the oldest distillery in the world) and some Dutch beers. Brand, Hertog Jan, Heineken, Amstel, Grolsch are the most popular Dutch brands you can find in any supermarket. And the last one..Advocaat ( you know it as Eggnog) is a Dutch product/invention especially made for the elderly 😉 .. Enjoy!

The various likeurtjes are pretty Dutch: Oranjebitter, Pisang Ambon, (Kalmoes) Berenburg, etc. And Jenever, of course. All designed to warm you up after a hard day outside or on a cold boat. Advocaat is the Dutch variant of Eggnog. Apart from the world-famous pilsners, the Dutch have their own variants of beer, like Bokbier -- but that is seasonal. The only non-alcoholic Dutch drink I can think of is Anijsmelk. The Dutch mainly drink tea or coffee, and occasionally hot chocolate with cream.

Exactly there is this one cheese made in an Abbey. It smells like someone peed their pants....really really bad. But oh my God the taste. Its so worth the smell. The richness of the taste is unbelievable. Its addictive really. Those monks know what they are doing. Its worth the bus trip smelling like ya wett yourself. I vacuum pack it in my bag and still you can smell it. I end up apologising to the busdriver.....still worth the trouble. Best cheese ever.

Nice video and thanks for shopping in Gouda, my hometown. Don't forget to come back in the summer for the 750 year anniversary (with lots of cheese and beer). Now you can say "Komijnen - kaas", replace the "m" with "n" and you will have a famous Easter animal, "konijnen". Kudos to you for trying "Limburger stinkkaas". It always reminded me of Cheddar cheese, an English cheese. As for a drinking suggestion, may I offer up "kriek lambiek", a fruit beer, 2-3 % alcohol and cherry flavored. From Limburg.

Lol I feel the pain of being lefthanded, kind of difficult sometimes in a world that's made for righthanded people. Your pronunciation is really getting there, awesome job! Some suggestions: - In the category of bitters, schelvispekel and beerenburg. I could do without this category of drinks but they are things that some of us apparently appreciate. - Vieux, relatively neutral cognac like drink. - Jenever. One of the oldest drinks we make, the first versions of which were made in the middle ages. It's the precursor to gin which contains more spices. - Then we obviously have beers. Heineken though generic does export and make a shitton of beer so it should be on your list, I personally like pils from Hertog Jan more. For the special beers I'll go with brewers instead of single beers, some brewers to check out are: homeland, texelse brouwerij and brouwerij 't ij. Since I believe you are in Rotterdam check out Stadshaven Brouwerij, it's basically a must. A Hertog Jan Grand Prestige is also really interesting though technically this would fall under barley wine or "gerstewijn". I don't know if you have a fear for liquor stores, but I'd suggest finding a nice pop and mom store and staying away from the bigger chains if possible. If you manage to find a good liquor store the service will be amazing and they'll gladly help you through this process. And if the "speciaalbieren" tickle your fancy definitely check out the Belgian beers, I'm sure everyone would forgive you for hopping countries for one episode. And just for fun, here is the etymology of charcuterie. "cold cuts of pork, sausage, etc.," 1858, from French charcuterie, literally "pork-butcher's shop," from charcutier "pork-butcher" (16c.), from obsolete char (Modern French chair) cuite "cooked flesh," from chair "meat" (Old French char, from Latin carnem "flesh," originally "a piece of flesh," from PIE root *sker- (1) "to cut") + cuit, past participle of cuire "to cook," from Latin coquere "to cook" (from PIE root *pekw- "to cook, ripen"). Compare French charcutier "pork butcher; meat roaster, seller of cooked (not raw) meat."

Oh goodies, drinks! 😁People already suggested jenever and roosvicee. I agree with them. I'd like to add Advocaat - which is eaten with slagroom/whipped cream. It's on the drinks section in the supermarket though- it's somewhat like eggnogg. Also not to be missed is Schrobbler, a herbs liquor from Tilburg. That's an easy one to get tipsy on! Amsterdam has its variant Kandeel. There are several variations of this drinks , depending on which city they are created. The slijterij /liquor store can point the differences out 😋

I need a cheeseboard with a glass of port tonight after seeing this. You missed my favourite by the way; fenegriek kaas. Fenegriek is a plant and the seeds having a little nutty taste and they put that in the cheese similar to komijnekaas. But that nutty flavour of fenegriek combines perfect with cheese.

Loved the cheese tasting video! When it comes to beverages there are 2 that come to mind: nutricia chocolademelk (hot or cold) and an alcoholic beverage that is a bit hard to find: Dutch Dynamite. I's like a salty dropshot (another very Dutch alcoholic beverage) and it's best when you drink it out of the fridge as cold as possible.

Suggestion for beverages: *Nutricia chocomel. That's chocolatemilk. You can drink it cold. From the fridge or heat it. I prefer the cold version. Yellow pack in the supermarket *Droste cacao. That's traditional dutch non sweeted coco. You put 1 or 2 teaspoons in a mug. If you wanna sweeten it also a teaspoon of sugar. Then add a little bit of hot water or milk and mix it really well. So you have no lumps. Then add the rest of the water or milk. The result is hot chocolatemilk

I again enjoyed your " kaas video". Keep braving it and you will become Dutch more and more! I think Tammy did really well. They are all nice on either white or brown/ dark brown bread. Also nice on toast. If you like pickles, that's a good combination to! As for a beverage, I am thinking of "Brand bier". It's a beer brewed in Limburg the south of Holland. That goes nice with your favourite cheese. 🙃 Also a typical Dutch thing is Advocaat with whipped cream. It's a very old fashioned older lady beverage....but I like it! ( I am not that old though) In a little cristal glass whipped cream on top and then spoon it out. Mmm 🙃😊 Ofcourse there is Jenever which I never liked but is typical Dutch. Enjoy...looking forward to the outcome!!

My suggestion for a drink would be Reine Claude limonade. It is a green sirop made from plums, to which you add water. Another green drink which I have only seen in the Netherlands is Pisang Ambon (alcoholic). The real Pisang Ambon is an Indonese recipe, though the one available in the Netherlands is from a Dutch distillery with an altered recipe.
