When we moved from the US to Rotterdam Netherlands we have tried some good food and some great food, but for me it been a hit and sometimes a miss. But the Indonesian Food we had today was a very pleasant surprise. I'm not sure what I was really expecting but I was surprised in a very good way! Living in Rotterdam as an expat from the US, one of our goals was to get out of our comfort zone and try new foods to us and this fit the bill. So The following is a list of things we tried and every tasting was really good. SOOOO... Thanks for watching our little vlog about us, our food tasting and what the food is really like in the Netherlands. A big thank you to TOKO Jeanny and Irwan for helping us out of our comfort zone and taste what real Indonesian food tastes like! Moving to Rotterdam Netherlands from the US I can tell you that you really can not get food this authentic. So if you travel to Rotterdam Netherlands, get off the beaten path find an alley or side street and try some food that you will not find anywhere else! Life in Europe is great!!!

Btw, I heard from my Californian cousin that there are quite a lot of good Indonesian restaurants in SoCal. Probably because of the many Dutch-Indo families who emigrated to the USA back in the 50's and 60's (e.g., the Van Halen family 😉).

The history of Indonesian food is interesting. Before Indonesia's independence in 1949, the Dutch landowners had vast tracks of land. In the weekends, or special holidays, they would invite their neighbors. Neighbors being the next family maybe 20 kilometers away. They would send out a messenger boy with a formal invitation and both households would start cooking 3 days before. That is, the cooks would start preparations, going to the market, etc. The cooks would be Indonesian AND Chinese. One family would prepare, say, 10 dishes and the other family another 10 dishes. The day of the reunion the resulting 20 different dishes would be served. The base is always noodles (Chinese) and rice (Indonesian). In Indisch Chinees restaurants in The Netherlands rijsttafel will be on the menu for 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 people and an extra table will be put next to yours to acommodate all the different dishes and the table warmers.

I call all the food that is adapted to the Dutch people westernised. My favor is the original spicyness because I learned to eat the original food as I was in the military and a collegue was maried to a Indonesian lady. They "forced "me to eat every evening at their home and it was always Indonesian. She learned me how to prepare it the right way and if I in the mood I make several dishes and family and friends are always welcome because it is always to much.

Rice table is the Dutch fusion translation of Indonesian food.
@WhoStoleMyAlias
@WhoStoleMyAlias Жыл бұрын
uhmm, no. It's a Dutch invention all right but it's original intent was a display of wealth towards guests in the Dutch Indies. The only thing `fusion` about it is that in a smaller scale one might consider it as Indonesian tapas. Rice table has since become an Indo Dutch tradition for birthday parties - no plakjes leverworst and blokjes kaas there...

Great tasting vid! and great that you 2 finally found your way to an Indo toko! My family is from former Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and they and all others brought so many food dishes with them, when they had to come here. The many tokos are the remaining legacy of their food heritage. We are finally back in Holland (living in Canada), on vacation, and the first night back my mom and brother celebrated with a kumpulan / family gathering with rijsttafel. We always had those kumpulans when my grandparents were still alive. I really missed the flavor and the taste of "home cooked" Indisch eten. Glad you tasted the tip of the iceberg, of the Indische/Indonesian mountain of food. There is soooo much more to explore! Enjoy your voyage in the multi culti cuisine, here in The Netherlands and please take us along, with your vids.

Being partially from Indonesian decent, I grew up with Indonesian food. And just like Eric, I pass on the eggs. At the start Tammy was wondering is there was an order to eat it. From my Indonesian mother we learned you eat those dishes with either white rice or with nasi kuning (yellow rice with coconut). That way the flavour of the seperate dishes will not get dulled down by the taste of the nasi or bami. You get a bite with rice and rendang, then a bite of rice with ayam etc. (btw Tammy: the crunchy bits on the bami/nasi are fried and dried onions) Stricktly speaking the nasi goreng originated as a dish of leftovers after a 'rijsttafel'. Everything was put in the wadjang and stir fried.

For a real Indonesian atmosphere and food you should go to a Pasar Malam (Indonesian night market) that is organized in almost every city. But the biggest annual Pasar Malam is the TongTong fair in The Hague (next to central station). It has been organized since the 1960s and is the largest Indonesian food festival in the world outside of Indonesia.

A rijsttafel is not Indonesian. It's something the Dutch colonials invented. They had the means to arrange big parties with lots of food on the table, all sorts of rice and variety of vegetables, fish and meats. The meals of the average Indonesian families back then consisted of mainly rice with whatever they could afford. After WWII the Dutch colonials and the Dutch-Indie (ie. of mixed race) families had to flee the then proclaimed independent Republic of Indonesia and were repatriated to the Netherlands. Some of them never saw their motherland again. They introduced the rijsttafel in The Netherlands, which is now part of Dutch heritage.

Thank you for your enthousiast comments on Indisch/Indonesian food. Rijsttafel is a Dutch colonial invention. I myself am from colonial roots. The way to enjoy the food is to put first of all rice in the middle of your plate. Use a deep dish. All around the edges you put little bits of the various dishes so you can make various combinations. Use a spoon and fork for eating. Drink water with it or beer or a whisky soda callrd a "splitje". In september there will be the Tong Tong festival in The Hague. A major event for ten days Enjoy!

Sorry for spamming the comments section but what I learned was that traditonal Indonesian dishes, as with most dishes in the entire South East Asian region (going as far as India itself probably) these dishes were not spiced up because they tasted so well. It was just that the people found out that hot spices on any dish would mean no insects or other little critters would go anywhere near the food. So in essence, preparing food with hot spices was a rather succesful way of preserving food in the hot climate for a day or so.

You guys are awesome. Keep doing these lovely videos. I enjoyed this one, i really love indonesian food. My grandfather lived in Nederlands Indië and after WW2 he and his relatives came back to the Netherlands. My entire family loves Indonesian food. There is so much more to discover. Next time you really have to try "Rendang" this is slow cooked very tender beef with spices and coconut and many people agree this is one of the best dishes in the world. You should also try "Sajur Lodeh" these are vegetables in a mildly spiced coconut creamy sauce (my grandma's favorite) The next thing that is high on my list is "Pepesan". This is smoked mackerel in a very spicy sauce (mainly sambal) steamed in the oven. Try to mix and match your dishes a little bit. For example you take some nasi goreng and you take a piece of rendang (the beef) and a slice of sweetsour cucumber. But don't mix everything that is on your plate into one mash like one big stamppot 🤣. Also don't forget to add some extra "Sambal" to your plate. Add a little bit of it with every bite you take. There are many many varieties you should try. Some not spicy, some extremely spicy. I really like sambal brandal (medium spicy), surinaamse sambal (not indonesian, but very good combination) and sambal badjak (sweet and less spicy). Sambal also goes very well with bread and cheese for a great lunch with a kick 👍😎 Selamat Makan (eetsmakelijk)

You must mix the most things you got with the noodles, at own tast add peanut sause or sambal. For me personal i put in a lot of sambal in it but its just the taste you like and want. I love your videos and like it to follow you. Greatings from Rotterdam Zuid.

Tip for eating Japanese foods: there is an all-you-can-eat restaurant chain in the Netherlands called Sumo. They serve bite size portions. You are getting a list with about 50 different bites to choose from. You choose 3 per serving rounds, by checking them on the list. Price is around 25 euro, but you can eat as many rounds as you want. Don't know if there is a possibility to film there, but it's lots and lots of fun! p.s.: if you decide to go please try the seaweed salad! Thanks for the very nice video again. You rock!

Good morning from the german border, nice to see you again. Indonesian food is awesome and you tried some of it. Try to make combinations too, the flavours combined will kick it to the next level. 😉😋 Take the bami and the sajoer boontjes with the rendang and the cucumber together.... Greetings as always and go to a Pasar Malam 😎👍🏼🙋🏻‍♂️🇳🇱👋🏽

I loved your video. If you are ever in Leiden, there is a very good Indonesian restaurant on Noordeinde. As far as I am concerned this is the finest Indonesian restaurant I've ever been to. Most of what you had on the table is not very difficult to make for yourself. In fact, a lot of Dutch people (and not just those of Surinam or Indonesian descent) make bami or nasi dishes regularly, just because they are tasty, full of meat and vegetables and quickly made to boot! I was once told that nasi (and bami?) goreng is historically whatever's leftover from last night put into the wok and mashed together. I don't care, it's delicious! ;-). Goreng is malay for 'fried'. Ajam means 'chicken', 'babi' means pork. Seroendeng is basically coconut flakes with peanuts and spices, and the crunchy bits you had on top of your bami and nasi I would reckon was fried onions.

I think there's something lost in translation, when we call it spicy (kruidig) we think of all the different kind of spices that are used in it and not the heat level, because then we call it pittig or heet! But you should also go and eat at a Indonesian restaurant and order the rijsttafel, it's a whole different experience, it's a table full of food and the order you'll eat is from NO heat to pretty HOT! 🥵🤤😋 Have fun at the Pasar Malam! ✌🏼

Great you are trying all ! Indonesian food is very popular!! Rice-table means rice with loads of small side dishes, not indonesian at all but invented by the colonial Dutch to show all the highlights of indonesian kitchen. The idea is take some rendang with rice (nasi goreng=fried rice) etc. etc. Kroepoek crumbled and satay-saus on the gado-gado is great!! You are great trying and liking it!!

Dear Eric and Tammy, Thanks again for your great infotainment vlog! For Indonesian food you should really try Restaurant Blauw in Utrecht (or Amsterdam). This restaurant is also recommended by the New York Times and Lonely Planet. I loved the bloopers. Very funny. Last but not least, watch out for the sajoer boontjes. They will give you a morning after burn! 😉

very nice to see how you enjoy Indisch food. You were talking about Surinamese food. Surinamese can be somewhat the same because there is a Surinamese Javanese kitchen. Many Javanese used to leave for Suriname to work as contract workers in Suriname. Java is a large island in Dutch Indies/ Indonesia

For the Chinese Cuisine ...look for a Kantonese restaurant or outtake! For my understanding the Kantonese Cuisine was the cuisine for the Chinese Emperor and his entourage! We also have French cuisine kitchens, Librije in Zwolle …. a bit pricy, but people fly specially to The Netherlands for de Librije, one of the best chefs in the world, 3 Michelin stars for ever now. Try Alfa pilsner, best pilsner in the world is from The Netherlands, Alfa.
