A bent paper clip works great for checking. However, my favorite tool is a long torch tip cleaner. Just bend the tip slightly with a pair of pliers, and you can check to see if you have a ridge on the inside of the case. If I feel anything snagging the paper clip, I scrap that piece of brass. Good explanation on minimizing your shoulder bump too. I generally set up my dies, for a .002" shoulder bump, when I size my cases. Yours is .008-.010", which is way too much. Good stuff though CW. Something for everyone to keep an eye on.
@cw2aАй бұрын
@@lmbear 💥❤️🩹🙏❤️🩹💥 Thank you man!! This occurred on my watch by not resetting dies when I switched to my MEC press. Must have been close to previous press as I didn't notice. A .002 bump can be a crush/ bump fit in some guns and is far too tight in a semi. So there is variables. The idea is my minimize. .003 - .005 is generally accepted for a Bolt and .007- .010 ish for a semi as a start. But its not set in stone. I like .004-.005. Gives room as not all will size exact to this number. The 35's have small shoulders and can have these issues easier then other calibers.

Great detective work and explanation. Sometimes the exterior shiny ring above the case web is caused by just the full length sizing die prior to case trimming, as on some cartridge/calibers, my Lee dies will not extend past the case web. I make it a practice to discard all cases after the 4th to 5th reloading due to primer pocket stretch. Powder, pressure, velocity, bullet weight, number of times trimmed and cartridge/caliber used, ie high powder volumes are indicators of when one may choose to retire brass. Thanks for your analysis CW.

Pretty interesting stuff brother! I'm new at reloading.. so I always use a factory round to set my dies. Then create a dummy round.. and take time to duplicate every round. It's time consuming.. but I'm enjoying my peaceful time and learning step by step. Even weigh every load for developing a consistent test. I'm sure a lot of people do the same thing when they are beginners! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us 😁

So I'm sure you don't need me to say you are on the right track. However I'm still a bit curious as to case head diameter measurement change? One other point right, wrong, or indifferent the whelen is one cartridge I kept fired cartridges separated by specific rifle, and only neck sized. Avoiding touching the shoulder. To be fair as of today I have have enough loads on hand that my grandkids will never need to replenish. Food for thought. Mountain man

@@StevenMMan Yes more than a few Reloaders of the 35's don't touch their shoulders. They are small and can and do bring issues.

Great video! I bought a case comparator a few years back when I was having light primer strike issues with my 336 in 35 Rem. Glad I bought that great tool! I measure all my fired cases now. For decades I just spun my FL die down as instructed in the RCBS instructions and never paid attention to the shoulder measurements. I do now. What is acceptable for the “indentation” inside the case where your tool was grabbing?

When expanding neck size up on ammo like 30 to 35 you have to be care full to maintain proper head space, it is better to neck down than up, necking up makes your brass shorter as well as well as increases chances of head space issues, As the flattened primers showed {on striking the primer is pushed out of the case then high pressure flattens the primers as the head reaches the bolt face,}, necking down leaves you with the ability to use the temporary shoulder to maintain head space and have proper oal case length,
