There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

In "Chasnel" the S would be silent, so same pronunciation as the brand. It was very common for names spellings to change from generation to generation, because most poor people didn't read and write well, if they learned at all. So I think the administrations would sometimes make up the spelling based on what the person said their name was. In France school became free and mandatory in 1882 from 6 to 13 years old. So that gives a vague idea of the level of literacy in the 19th and early 20th century. As a comparison, today in France, about 7% of people who have been schooled in France are considered illiterate

The nuclear scientist he mentioned was Ettore Majorana, he disappeared in 1938.

Just FYI there were no huge hoopskirts in the early 1900s; those went out in the 1870s. Women's clothing was still fairly complicated, but it was changing, and while Chanel very deliberately marketed herself in the decades to come as the only one daring trailblazer who changed everything, she wasn't. Fashions were changing already.

Really interesting episode. I think is important to look into the story of Coco Chanel more deeply because of all the lies created around her persona thanks to personal branding (movies and books included) which helped to make this brand one of the biggest luxury brands today. However, most of the stuff presented here pertaining to her fashion is unfortunately rooted in that marketing rather than the truth. Coco Chanel didn’t „invent“ the little black dress, it was around and worn before at that time. She also didn’t revolutionize women’s fashion. She tapped into trends that were already happening or flat out copied other designers and later created this false claim of her being a trailblazer as part of her personal branding. That this claim has been reproduced and barely questioned so many times bares testimony to the power of branding versus actual historical research. She also didn’t give a f*ck about women’s rights. She also exploited her workers.

I feel like I have to point out that Coco, as good as she was at lying, eagerly took credit for creating or starting fashion trends that she categorically did not come up with herself. Things like the highly structured fashions of the 1900s and earlier being replaced by simpler, shorter, looser styles, short hair, the use of athletic fabrics, women wearing more masculine styles, even her legendary little black dress, all became associated with her brand, but all evidence shows that they all were emerging in artistic circles of Paris and other cities. She was good at finding what would define the fashions of future decades, and she was amazing at business and marketing, but she was not the creative trailblazer she would later portray herself as.

Wild to think a character from RoosterTeeth's show RWBY is named after this person.
