Hugo Boss is a luxury fashion brand associated with wealth, elegance, and status - but this fashion icon has done all it can to hide its dark business past from the public eye. This is the story of how Hugo Boss supported Hitler, made the uniforms for the Nazis, and yet somehow re-branded and built a global fashion empire. Welcome to the INSANE story of Hugo Boss & the history of Hugo Boss's luxury fashion business empire. We'll look at: How did Hugo Boss begin? Why is Hugo Boss' history controversial? Did Hugo Boss make nazi uniforms? Why did Joe Lycett change his name to Hugo Boss? Why is Hugo Boss so successful? What business and marketing lessons are there from Hugo Boss? Plus lots more in this business mini movie about the story of Hugo Boss!
The Hugo Boss story all begins when a boy named Hugo Boss was born in Germany in 1885, in Metzingen, who developed an interest in the fashion business from an early age... He wanted to create his own fashion company - and before long managed to turn a small local shop into a whole factory, Hugo Boss' apprenticeship as a merchant made him a great salesman, and before long, the company’s clothing became fairly well known around Germany. However, after World War I Germany had been ordered to pay a huge amount of money in reparations. The debt was set at 132 billion gold marks, the equivalent of about $270 billion US dollars in today’s currency. This began to cripple the German economy. As the US, UK, and France enjoyed extravagant spending on behalf of Germany’s debt, a time known in America as the Roaring 20s, Germany struggled to pay off the war. As a result, German citizens saw high inflation and business closures - and therefore even though Hugo Boss’ clothing had been pretty popular, his company began to suffer. No amount of good reputation could help the fact people were struggling to afford his work. And then, the Great Depression only made Germany’s bleak economic situation even worse - food became scarce, jobs were nowhere to be found, and some families even burnt their money to provide heat during the harsh winters. Hugo tried to save his business, but was forced to lay off most of his work force and shut down his factory. Eventually, he filed for bankruptcy, and all Hugo Boss was left with were 6 sewing machines. It seemed like the Hugo Boss clothing brand would be nothing but a short-lived dream... But of course, we all know that’s not the case - in present day Hugo Boss is a multi-billion dollar clothing empire. So, what happened?

Japan have done a lot for countries they had wrong in past decades, Mostly in aiding their economy and development via low interest and favorable loan or economic aid. They also help funding a lot of education system and infrastructure in those country. They just don't talk about it. People can interpret it as they refuse to acknowledge their past -- Or that it's just not in their culture to announce one own good deeds (or just trying to paint one in positive light in general). Personally I think it's a combination of both. But while such cultural tendency certainly shown it downsize generation later in the young population that are ignorant of their own terrible history and seem unable or disincline to learn from the past the popular sentiment that somehow emerge this past decade that "Japan has done nothing to atone for their past crime and their role in WW2" is completely fail and unjust.

They looked good, but uniforms of both the Heer and SS were tactically useless. They were too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. German troops picked the corpses of Russians and took their boots and coats to keep from freezing to death. In the summer, the Germans were known to march in jackboots and underwear because the wool or herringbone twill summer suits would make them have heatstrokes. Then Germany ran out of cotton and wool and started using Rayon and patent leather, which was even worse. So yeah, Nazi uniforms looked good while they were dying of frostbite and heatstroke, but the Allies put function first, which was why they won the war.
@christianmcbrearty
@christianmcbrearty 3 ай бұрын
@@RockandrollNegro The Allies didn't win the war because of their uniforms 😂 They won it because Hitler had failed to effectively plan long term. He did have a grand vision, but didn't know how to get there. When all his allies crumbled, he knew it was all over for Germany. Also the Nazi uniforms were actually quite comfortable at the start of the war. You're right, once they ran out of higher quality materials they did get more uncomfortable. But also it depended on where the soldiers were fighting. Many officers didn't actually serve as much on the frontlines, therefore their good looking suits functioned well enough. And nobody can argue that the Nazis didn't have style. They were definitely the most stylish (yet evil looking) uniforms in history.

I only learned this about 3 years ago, despite a life-long interest in the military, inherited by my father. You did a great job Summarizing the topic but forgot to mention a very important point. I read that he was more than just a manufacturer, but he designed the uniforms the nazis and army wore. If So, This demonstrated his skill and increase the company's popularity considerably. German army at the time had in my opinion the best- looking uniform of any army in the world. It's hard to take pride in your unit or appearance if your outfit looks like a piece of shit to start with, like most armies Were only interested in function and price and not style. His simple styling looked elegant yet sinister Like most German designs even down to the vehicles you can tell a German vehicle just by looking at it And like most things if they look good, they probably are. The problem is due to the nazis behavior they completely killed that particular design because of its close association to the nuts is they even changed their nice looking hats in the post war period, and lost that cool look.

Yeah I was thinking about that the other day. Okay so picture this, you have a business in your local country. All of a sudden the leader of the country goes mad and goes to war. So what do you do with your business in the towncentre? Wouldn’t you keep on doing your business and make a living? How many would flee their home country because a leader goes mad?

@@AM-qk5bt Yes and 3 American companies Chase bank assisted in the sale of Nazi war bonds (Rueckwanderer Marks) to German Americans. Ford motors is alleged to have helped with Vehicle and war production and Used slave/forced labor. And IBM Produced early computers utilized in the pursuit of the Holocaust by Nazi Germany. Thanks to IBM's 2,000 punch card machines, the Nazis made 1.5 billion index cards. They help in the modern and efficient management of prison, labor and extermination camps. So I wouldn't be too hard on German companies who were under extreme pressure to work and supply the Nazi party. But 3 American companies who were any ocean away didn't need to do business with the Nazi's.

Hitler didn't drive an Audi because Audi didn't exist until the 1960s. He owned a 1 of 5 Auto Union Type D built by Porsche. Porsche also built the VW Beetle that Hitler helped design. There's a big difference between brands like Auto Union which were seized under socialism and made to serve the Reich, and brands like Porsche/VW and Hugo Boss that were massive supporters of Hitler and the Reich, and joined the Wermacht willingly. Then you have brands like Mercedes and BMW that fell somewhere in between. The same situation exists in legacy Japanese brands. Some were seized by the Emperor and some served him willingly.

I didn’t know everything about HB. It was really interesting. I don’t like any of these so called designer brands. They are just overpriced rubbish, and unfortunately due to the media circus and influencers all the young want designer. Do they make his clothes in China? Are the workers looked after properly? I like to stick to as much of my products to be made in my country, which is getting harder and harder.

@@_phantomII_ I hated Kering. Kering is one of many rootless conglomerates that buys up locally-owned assets and moves the headquarters to tax havens, while having degenerates in Paris and Brussels dictate what contracted designers in Italy have to design. The brands under the portfolios of these companies, have all been gutted and made international. Just like our art, architecture, music, and demographics. Edit: I should also mention that my aunt, while trying to earn money after running from home, ended up in Spain in 1968, and was a seamstress for almost a year in Madrid for Balenciaga; look at their clothes and creative direction prior to acquisition. Look at the caliber of clothing they were making in the 1950s/1960s. It is not the same. At all.

@@sergpiewell maybe its not just Balenciaga that is screwed. Maybe its the bigger faceless brand aka The Kerings of this world that are so corrupt and force the smaller units and family brands to vilify themselves just to survive. I dont in any case sympathise with demonic brands however that has become the norm. The brands leading with a clear conscience should be cherished and supported. Speaking of which, would you say due to your experience that there are any big brands like the example?
