There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

I do think that it should be noted that racism/colorism wasn't new in Latin America when the School of the America's was founded, even specifically views darker skinned people are more suited to labor. That specifically is found in La Raza theory and Argentina specifically has been accused of committing genocide against Black and Indigenous people (its at the very least guilty of whitening/Blanqueamiento) and definitely has erased Black Argentinan history.

But don't you know...every negative thing in world history (at least since 1776) is solely the fault of the United States of America?

It's tricky and a slippery slope but you're not wrong. The SOAs excerbated and exploited that racism and hatred. Don't get me started on Argentina. Lol.

Whoa. Yeah. A lot of people now don't really know about this. My family is from El Salvador. That place created monsters.

Yeah, because El Salvador was a beacon of peace and tranquility before that place was created.

40:00 "We should cease to talk about vague and unreal objectives ..." Reading that in a history book as a 12-year-old kid in the Philippines rewired my brain

The whole idea that politics, business, diplomacy, etc are zero-sum games needs to die. Raising yourself up by stepping on others isn't the only way. Honestly, that's what pisses me off the most about the ultra-wealthy; the larger the population of well-educated and knowledgeable and healthy people, the more minds there are to work on the tough problems. Like cancer research. And curing aging. And space exploration.

Anti-aging research is an inherently bad idea, because any successes will immediately be captured by the ultrarich to ensure that we have not only a permanent aristocracy, but permanent individual aristocrats. The rest of us will stay mortal, because they will be more interested in making our future generations pay for their own training than in having better, more experienced, more skilled workers (who can negotiate with the power of expertise). Also, space exploration is an entropic boondoggle. Cancer research is good, though, so one out of three ain't bad, I guess.

No, no, no! In America step 1 with a problem is creating it, and step 2 is ignoring it for as long as possible.

Sadly, it is news for many, and too many won't even pay attention to things like that.

Sadly, when the vast majority of adult Americans were taught US history, we spent just a few pages in a textbook on the Spanish-American War, and then learned basically nothing else related to our interventions in Central and South America. Maybe a note about how we had the Panama Canal built, but definitely no grim details, or much clarity on why we somehow had so much influence on the project. Only those of us who seek out that information on our own get treated to the unsanitized version of our country's history. I hope the lessons in school are a bit more honest in the present day, but that probably heavily depends on what state they are taught in.

Oxford might have graduated more than 11 dictators - once Boris Johnson joked that Britain had a monopoly on the export of foreign dictators because of it

Living comfortably no your own is an illusion though, as even if you're rich, or even just middle class, you're still depending on the workers whose labour you exploit.

this is true even if youre poor in america lol. or anywhere. we are all interdependent. you had the start of a good thought but weirdly limited it to class, as if the u.s. and other "developed" countries dont exploit entire populations while we reap the benefits
