There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

My theory is that whole hip world was massively traumatized from 1930 to 1985, first by World War 2 and then by the omnipresent specter of atomic apocalypse, and we've been feeling the aftershocks of that unresolved psychic violence ever since.

also to be considered is that the first generation or 2 raised the subsequent two that felt the latter highly stressful atmosphere, boomers in particular but at least part of gen X too. While their parents were the ww2 generations, either young adults, many that fought as soldiers or kids that grew up in that environment and many of their parents lived through ww1.

But funny seems to be more PTSD from imagined communism than the actual fascism
@Zappygunshot
@Zappygunshot 7 ай бұрын
@@shaunsmith9013 That's part of how fascism works, there has to be some sort of grave outside threat to their 'good traditional [insert supremacism here] way of life' or nobody will follow them. Turns out that people only get real stupid if they're in a constant state of panic, the second they're able to think things over a bit it turns out that maybe we shouldn't commit war crimes on a scale so large it is physically impossible for a human mind to imagine.
@marocat4749

That might be even aplicable toa lot of history, we ust lack reliable data do make any good case there. Its like we stand on the world created by oprior generations, for better and worse. Also generational trauma might be more common tan awareness is there
@willowarkan2263
@willowarkan2263 7 ай бұрын
@@shaunsmith9013 i mean anti communist messaging has always been better funded then antifascist messaging. The rich happily fund the former and plenty of them loved the fascists, when they weren't members outright, for their anticommunist activity. More over given how many businesses had close ties to the Nazis in particular, it's no wonder that there would be a proactive desire to move on and not looking into things too closely. Reducing fascists to cartoon villains, while pulling oh so many into western governments. So it has been in every rich and powerful (capitalist) persons interest to fear monger about communism and obfuscate the extent of fascisms spread among both sides of the conflict both before and after the war.

The sad part of that: Dwight Schulz, the guy who played Barclay, became a bit of a right-wing nut job birther. I'm told he's always been a conservative, but he jumped down the rabbit hole that many right-wing celebrities who aren't Kelsey Grammer did. There's a reason why he doesn't show up at Trek cons and subsequent works, not even _Lower Decks._

When me and my brother were forced to live with my dad every Xmas he would load a deer rifle and every Easter a 12 gauge. He’d tell us he’s sad that the mag only holds 5 rounds or he’d get “all the deer and that fat bastard too” often we’d eat venison on Xmas and Hasenpfeffer on Easter. Yep quite the bastard!

On the one hand, having Paul's name in parentheses just after the description of the cult leader seems slightly unfortunate because it could be interpreted as though Paul is the cult leader. But on the other hand it does allow me to just search "behind the bastards paul f tompkins" and have it come up immediately, because sometimes I just want to re-listen to his episodes XD

This is kinda like that one story where these two kids didn't get what they wanted for Christmas one year, so the next year they murdered Santa Claus. When they go to tell their uncle what they've done, they can't find him for some strange and mysterious reason. And the narrator mentions that he never did see his uncle after that, but does not appear to grasp the connection. ... Actually, this is nothing like that. That was dark humor, this time that Paul F. Tompkins murdered Santa (awkward parenthesis joke) is just fucked up.

Gaslighting is the trusted respected individual telling you that you’re the crazy one. And changing your reality to propagate that illusion of mental dysfunction. In a cult situation it is made easier because there are other around you to bring affirmation to you about said changing reality.
