There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

1:13:00 No mention that the minute Arpaio lost the Sheriff's seat, his crappy/deadly tent prison was dismantled. It ran from 1993 to 2017, 24 straight years of misery.

To be fair though, Arpaio was only super popular in Maricopa County, and most of that popularity was with the ultra conservatives and snowbirds that, frankly, didnt need to put up with him full-time. The states other populous counties like where Tucson and Flagstaff are, he wasnt popular. He might have had issues running for a statewide election. Especially with the death in custody and frame job in his past that would most certainly be used against him in campaign ads. Admittedly still early in the podcast, but your reliance on New Times isnt an accident. It was a fairly progressive paper and they liked that they had someone as corrupt as Arpaio to follow, a gift that keeps on giving. And eventually you learn that Arpaio regularly arrested those reporters and even county supervisors if they called him on anything or opposed him in any way. This happens repeatedly...to the point that the county attorney had to say "dude, you need to stop arresting these guys, none of these charges have any foundation in reality" *correction* you did touch on it :) Worst part of the immigration sweeps is he continues them *even after he's explicitly told to stop by a federal judge* This is why he's convicted for contempt of court, then gets a pardon from Trump.

I had occasion to spend about 24 hours in Maricopa county jail this past December. I'm guessing sheriff Joe doesn't approve that all inmates are issued a tablet and spend most of their days on the internet in their cells now. The food is still the most unbelievable grotesqueness you could imagine, however.

Worse thatn most hospitalfood, that to be fair most of the time might be notthe freshest and lack seasoning cause it needs to be ok for everyone and ot toomuch, but still. , but i guess its worse :(. The tablet is nice thou, even if probably that has some parent supervision programm, its still nice for the monotony .Maybe even educational.

@@marocat4749I was pretty sure my time in there was short so I didn't eat, but the two meals I saw were both some unidentifiable mixture of what my best guess meat and beans, along with a brick masquerading as a roll. Packet of peanut butter was the only thing I could imagine putting in my mouth. Anything resembling fruit was gathered off everybody's trays and immediately put in used pop bottles to ferment between the bars in full view of the guards who gave zero shits.

As I mentioned above, I've had this misfortune to have lived in Arizona some years and I learned to not bring up Uncle Joe and his "Hotel" even jokingly, because if the person I'm having an idle conversation with at the counter in Denny's is white, chances are very good they've been there. It's a way of life!

17:23 I'm dead. Ya'll killed me with that whole bit. Tim Allen, through shenanigans moves to Kandahar, Afghanistan. If they rebuilt the "Tool Time" show in that universe, set in Afghanistan... I'd watch it! Al Borland is some dude name "Afzal 'insert last name here'." He learned his craft in the Kyber Pass workshops. Extra points if they do an "This Yankee Workshop" off of PBS in there.

@@merciless972 oh dude, they'd have to either make episodes have only men, or just have "Ladies nights." Heidi, the tool time girl would have be "Farah" now. And possibly depending on broadcasting theocratic rules, she would be made to be played by a dude name Dalsim, if a woman can't be on there.

I grew up in Arizona and used to live there for the majority of my life till a couple years ago when I moved to Oregon for a new job. I've known the name Arpaio since I was in elementary school. I don't think it's a coincidence that Arpaio finally got voted out in 2016 since that's about when my generation of high schoolers and college students hit voting age.

I lived in Arizona for some years and .... I called Joe "our guilty pleasure". There was a certain amount of humor about the tent camp, the pink underwear, the "green" baloney etc., but ... this is in light of what I can only call *Arizona culture* by which I don't mean the cultures of the actual First Nations people there, or the Mexican and other cultures of those who have come to live there from "south of the border", no what I mean is a particularly mean, vicious, willfully ignorant, crime-prone working-class (mostly) white culture. Even people whose parents had been middle-class, maybe worked for Motorola or some other large company and basically kept their noses clean, their children will embark on lives of crime and drugs. These are people who will take a "fix-it" ticket for a non-functioning tail-light and escalate that right up to a felony. They're in and out of jail like it has a revolving door, and are very proud of their (mostly quite bad) tattoos, their drug use and the amount they can drink, all the neat ways they can steal a car, etc. There's a reason the "classic rock" radio station would announce the menus at the various prisons, because that way you could hear what half your family was eating that day. There are people who *want* to be guests of Joe. They go out of their way to be guests of *Joe*. Joe Arpaio's a scumbag, but you can't say he and his "clients" don't deserve each other.
