Sea Fishing For Cod From The Beach - Winter Cod Quest Part Two
For this latest latest episode and for part two of our Cod quest we once again took the cameras down to Aldeburgh Town Beach in Suffolk with the hope of catching a few Cod/Codling from the shore. With good conditions, a big tide and some nice bait we were hopefully of a Codling or two, but did we catch one... watch the video to find out!

Hi Kerry, I bet those were the days! My Dad has told me similar stories, he used to go and fish with his friends and if they didn't catch a Cod it would be more unusual than catching one! You never know one day it might happen again... although I'm not holding my breath!

@FromTheWatersEdgeTV

Sie menotsyaing Hi mate, yeah we'll defo carry on the Cod Quest this year, I'm hopeful, after all them small fish last year, that they will return this year and be bigger!!! :-) Hopefully the video's will then be a little more fish filled!! :-) About your second question… yeah you should definitely change the bait regularly, in my opinion fresh, quality bait, is the most important thing, along with the state of tide and area you are fishing. Hope that helps! :-)

@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 9 жыл бұрын
Hi heavy246 it sounds strange, but you just learn to 'know'! Obviously after a bite is a good start! Haha. However bites differ for different fish and so would my time for striking/reeling in. A might let a small bite develop for a few minutes, where as a big pull down/slack liner would see me on the rod in a second!

Thanks Dave, glad you enjoyed the video and found it interesting. The shelter we are using is an old John Holden Beach Buddy, they used to be fairly expensive, but are cheaper now. There's a link to the tackle in the video description. There are some nice cheap ones on the market... Ron Thompson Beach Shelter, or Waterline Nerus, are two that are worth looking at. :-)

Cod are bottom feeders, so i would cut slits into the first bait you made, it looked like air was trapped in the squid as you whipped the bait elastic on, which will make it float.. just a thought.
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV

Hi Delta, interesting shout that and something I've never thought of. I think the fast tide run would keep the bait pinned to the bottom, but certainly some food for thought!

Hi +w33ksy I like the Greys GRX-s I think they are a great all round rod at a nice price, however I'm not 100% sure if they are still available. I'd have a look at anything by Greys, Daiwa or Sonik though, they all seem pretty reliable! :-) Might be worth a having a little look and handling a few in your local tackle shop, I'm sure they'd be able to point you to something similar :-) Hope that helps. @FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 7 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, I like to put fresh bait on every time, even if its not been touched. It's key to keep a nice scent trail in the water... if a bait has been out a while its probably washed out, with no smell or attraction.

I'm new to sea fishing. With that rig do they hook themselves? i.e. you don't have to strike or do you have to keep a keen eye on the bending rod? I have trouble telling if it's a bite from the waves moving the line and giving false bites. Great vids! Cheers
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron, most sea fish will hook themselves, especially the smaller one's. You don't really need a 'strike' as such, you just need to lift into them. Normally bites will be very different from waves, there'll tend to be a sharper motion. Glad you are enjoying the video's! :-)

Does the lugs stay on the hook after casting. It seems that I'm losing the lugs after every cast unless I use some elastic thread, which I think puts the fish off from biting. Any tips gratefully appreciated.
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 10 жыл бұрын
Hi karlthespark yeah the Lugworm does stay on the hook, you need to make sure you thread it on carefully though, or use a baiting needle. If you are reeling in with no bait left, it might be that small fish, or especially crabs are stripping it while it's on the sea bed. You can use elastic too, it certainly doesn't put the fish off! :-) Hope this helps. Cheers
@karlthespark
@karlthespark 10 жыл бұрын
Hi From The Waters Edge TV thanks for the reply. Yeah thanks for the help. I also noticed in your videos that you exposed the hook when baiting, I as a novice had the brainwave to disguise the hook with the lugs thinking I was being clever. Today I started exposing the hooks and reeled in fish after fish. Thanks again. Good helpful videos, keep up the good work.
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 10 жыл бұрын
No worries karlthespark Yeah leave plenty of hook point exposed! The fish are very wild and not tackle shy, especially when the water is coloured and when theres a big surf and tide running! :-) Glad you managed to convert a few bites into fish, that's whats its all about! Tight lines and good luck with your fishing. Cheers Chris.

year I live In deal (kent) and were having skate huss dabs witing pouting a few codling at night its open Sunday to Thursday till 10 pm Friday till midnight and Saturday all night. there are two shops pleasure angling bye the royal hotel and channel angling bye the pier entrance fred in there can get some fresh blacks for £5.50 a score for me as I am a junior angler and regular customer and £3 for a box of squid I could pop down to show a few places to fish bottom deack ish the best for codling but snaggy so I use 3 hook cascade rig down there. but if you fancied a dab then I can get 100 blow lug days before for you ctu the heads of and roll them then frige them for a week that will get lots of dabs. if you fancied a skate get sandell and bluey and cocktail on a pully pennel or if low on cash get a box of squis and put a whole one .

Hi Matthew, its an old John Holden beach buddy. I believe they are now made by Daiwa/Sundridge. If you click the tackle box link in the video description it should take you to the new model available. Hope that helps, cheers Chris.

Do you get sponsored with your bait? A pack of lug these days cost around £3.50, so on average I use around 1-2 lug a time. How do you bloody last for so long lol.
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 10 жыл бұрын
Hi TottHD no we don't, we don't get sponsored with anything. Normally I purchase 100 worm (around £20) and a box of squid (around £3-£5) This will last me for a session of say 6-8 hours, which I guess is quite expensive, but it's like any hobby.... I guess a round of golf, ticket to the football, few hours down the pub, would work out even more expensive and not last as long. However I must say I also enjoy all of the above, especially the latter! Haha! Tight lines, Cheers Chris.

@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 3 жыл бұрын
Did I not? If not I'm sure I have in some of our videos. The hook literally just clips on the little clip on the impact lead - it's quite straight forward, streamlines your bait/rig and always detaches on impact with the water. :-)

We use bait elastic to whip the bait to the hook, makes it tougher for the crabs to get it off and stops it exploding on the cast.

4 lug worms a cast wow you must spend some money on bait as lug are like 75p each that £3 a cast to catch whiting you dont even eat
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Janet, no Lugworm aren't that expensive. They work out around £18 for 100 worms, although thats still expensive enough! It's not too bad if there are some Cod around, but is painful when your wasting good quality bait on pin Whiting! I guess it's the same as any hobby... joining a golf course, getting a football season ticket, having a pint... are all expensive, but if you enjoy it then you don't worry about it!
