@@ddahstan6876 Really, you could use either the present or the past perfect progressive. "I've been pulling" indicates that you've just now gotten this clarification, (so you've basically been frustrated up until now), which goes well with your present perfect in "I've finally found." But, it's also perfectly fine to use "I'd been pulling," since it continued until a (very recent) past time. There are certain situations when the past perfect (progressive) is necessary, but there are other times when it is interchangeable with simple past or with present perfect progressive.

Do you have the Azar series of grammar books? The intermediate would be the black book, "Fundamentals of English Grammar," and the advanced would be the blue book, "Understanding and Using English Grammar." I used those for many years in teaching intermediate and advanced-level grammar. You can probably buy older editions more cheaply. If you get one with the Answer Key, then you can check your answers to the exercises. It's worth the extra cost to know if you are getting the correct answers or not!

The question is: when you hear this sentence: "The family had been living in the house for years when they noticed the bulge in the wall." How would you know if they moved or not ?? Or how would you know if they moved before they know about the bulge or at the moment they knew?? Are all these explanations possible with the past perfect continuous or am I wrong?? InshaAllah I will teach high school students this year, that's why I am studying Grammar in detail these days. Thank you so much in advance.

Thank you for your good question, and I'm sorry it took me a while to respond. The past progressive simply tells you that the action/situation continued all the way until the moment of the simple past. It does NOT tell you whether the action or situation changed at the moment of the simple past. So, in your sentence, we know that the family was living in the house for years before they noticed the bulge in the wall. Did they move at that moment? We have no reason to think so. In fact, it's unlikely simply because the progressive form indicates that the situation is unfinished. Did they move the next day? The next week? Never? We have no way to know that. What we DO know is that they were still living in the house when they noticed the bulge; they did not move before that time. Does that help?

Nice class. I have a doubt ma’am. What is the rule of using “being” in the middle of a sentence without any auxiliaries, not in the case of passive voice. I have seen news reports in which being is often used.

Hi Shuhaib - In English, we say "I have a question" instead of "I have a doubt." Can you give me an example of one of these sentences with 'being'? I would need to see what you are thinking of in order to try to explain it.

My question is that how we can use being instead of is, are etc. Eg: As long as we can imagine there “being” universities in which the state has an interest in seeing that their classes represent diverse viewpoints. Some say they were three, the fourth “being”the dog. Sometimes there are alternatives of use, the tendency “being” to use the form without the definite article.

Thank you for the suggestion, Abdi. It is exceptionally difficult to give general explanations about prepositions; when it is possible to give explanations, it is usually for very specific situations. There's a lot of memorization involved, I'm afraid. But, I'll keep it in mind! :)
