When teaching the basic -ed/-ing endings, I always mention the "cause" is the -ing and the "effect" is the -ed.

Thanks a lot for this amazing explanation,I would like to ask about the verbs taste and smell,is it correct when we say the cake tastes good since we are the real doer of the verb taste (the cake couldn't be tasted without us 😊) Or we can say the cake tasted good (and here tasted is used as an adjective not the past form of the verb taste 😮)I don't know if ti works without using the verb to be before the adjective 🤔... please let me know. Or the correct one is the cake is tasting good, really I'm confused 🤔

Very simple and easy to understand. Thank you. But I have a question. Using the idea that the timing is a factor (falling snow / fallen snow), why does "losing team / lost team" have such a big difference in meaning? I hope this makes sense. The snow that is falling. = "The falling snow." The snow that fell. = "The falllen snow." The team that is losing. = "The losing team." The team that lost. = "The losing team" and not "the lost team." Can you explain that a little more clearly?
@Malecot
@Malecot 6 жыл бұрын
A good way to look at the difference between “the losing team” and “the lost team” is that “losing” comes from the action “to lose”, but “lost” really has no action. It’s just a description. The team didn’t do anything to get lost, but it did do something to lose the game. Same thing with “falling snow” which is doing the action of falling, but “fallen snow” is no longer doing anything. It’s just a description of the snow and has no present action. I hope this helps.

Thanks. I teach English in Japan and I'm always looking for easier ways to explain why we use the words we do.
@Malecot
@Malecot Жыл бұрын
Yes. The term “lost" has a different meaning than the term “losing.” “Lost” in your example means the team doesn’t know where they are located, not that they didn’t win the game.

what is the difference between soaked and soaking...... both are adjective and how to use as an adjective in the sentence
@Malecot
@Malecot Жыл бұрын
“Soaked” has already happened. For example, “My clothes are soaked” means that they got wet earlier and they are not dry yet. “Soaking” is still happening. For example, " My clothes are soaking” means that they are in water right now. You can also these two forms (“soaked” and “soaking”) before a noun, and the difference is the same. For example, "My soaked clothes” got wet earlier so it already happened. “My soaking clothes” are in water right now. I hope this helps.

What about walking stick? The walking is not an emotion. Kindly explain. Thanks.
@Malecot

Think of it in terms of purpose. The purpose of the stick is to help you walk, just like in “nourishing food” the purpose of the food is to nourish.
