I worked for a GM dealership for 12 years. Upper management pushes the service manager and writers to get every last cent out of a customer. Now all the blame is pushed onto the mechanic to hurry and get the job done!!! A new mechanic becomes another angry person in the shop. When I finally left as I was hired by a local school as a automotive instructor all bitterness went away. I told my students enjoy the desire and enjoyment to be able to diagnose and repair a customers vehicle. Many customers will thank you in return. Yanni

Dude, you had me squinting and fidgeting. I've worked EMS for 4 decades. Had flashback to the 90's when a mechanic at the Ford dealership had an airbag flipped backward while working on it and it deployed. He got a LOT of dental work done, and he was lucky.

Soul crushing. Good way to put it. I'd always be on the edge of being sent to HR but I was good at my job and the customers were always calling the office telling them what a good job I did. And, everyone else always appreciated when I would say out loud what they were thinking. In all fairness, I always warned a new boss that I would say what everyone else was thinking so I feel that I gave them fair warning and therefore was exempt from incrimination. I wouldn't be disrespectful, I just liked to shine light on the ridiculous things and hypocrisy. Oh how I loved pointing out hypocrisy. I enjoy your playfulness! I can understand how a work environment can turn one bitter Ray, I worked with a technician who had a great response to the head of our HR dept years ago when during a meeting she said "he had a bad attitude" which he responded immediately " It wasn't like that before I started working here".
@farmermiyagi13385 сағат бұрын
I had a service manager accuse me of a bad attitude during a shop meeting one day, and I informed him that I came in with a fresh attitude every day then he would walk in the shop cursing, stomping, kicking boxes across the shop and such, and fuk up my good attitude. He actually thanked me after the meeting broke up for pointing out how his attitude effected the entire shop. I was managing a shop when he was still changing tires. XD

These diagnostic videos are very interesting. It shows how detailed knowledge of a proper scanner and how relating that to a good circuit diagram and then the knowledge necessary to deduce the root cause is necessary to take out the guess work in diagnosis. It’s also real world in that you’re crawling under. What I don’t understand is looking at the vehicle (no offence to the owner) and it’s mileage I’d say the cost of an ecu together with some of the other faults would render the car uneconomical to repair and so would’ve thought you’d check with the owner before continuing with the steering wheel. You could’ve had a nice cup of tea and a lie down in a darkened room instead. 😊

6:09 The Taco was doing this to me - we discovered that the cap and rotor were the original factory-installed parts with ~260K miles on them; the tab in the center of the rotor was almost totally blown away, and the carbon button in the cap was completely gone. New cap/rotor, fresh set of plugs, and it ran like it thought it was new again. (stopped playback to comment before I see what this one's problem are 🙃)

The power and grounds looks to be only for the heaters. The other two lines are the O2 detections. Those are not referenced to the heater (or to ground) at all. And I believe the heaters are only there to get the sensing element up to temp a bit quicker than if it relied just on the exhaust heat to get it hot. If you were to connect the DMM in mV mode across the sensor wires, you should see some voltage across them, when the engine is leaned out. If the sensor is working.

When you've had enough, before you hit the dash with your code scanner, learn the word that will bring relief - SMEG! "In 1989 the word “smeg” was used in the sci-fi sit com Red Dwarf as a catch all expletive that allowed the show to be broadcast before the 9PM watershed."
@hiscifi29862 сағат бұрын
On the diagram for the O2 sensor, the squiggly line is the heater, and the part with the arrow is the actual sensor element... On any diagram, something with an arrow, means it is a variable component.
@darrenwood-l5t2 сағат бұрын
Hi Ray, Merry Christmas to you and yours. Sorry to be a negative Nelly, but your diag workflow is flawed! The power and ground that you checked @ the O2 sensor connector were the heater wires and NOT the sensor wires! While you checked the continuity of the sensor wires TO the ECM you did not check for voltage FROM the O2 sensor ELEMENTS with the engine running. Now I'm not saying the ECM is NOT U/S, just that you did not complete the diag. Just because it's unlikely that both sensors would be U/S, NEVER assume!! Long time viewer, since way before you left the other shop! DOO, DOO, DOO (oh I miss that) Still doing a great job.
