My engine builder buddy tried to sell me on a big stroke 302. IMHO, the beauty of the 289 HiPo is winding it up to 8000rpm and the bigger the stroke, the more difficult/expensive rpm becomes. I'd definitely want a roller cam, roller rockers and ported k-heads, but for the sound I'm after means no stroker for me.

When I was building my 66 Fastback (a LOT like yours but Red / white stripes) 20 years ago the mantra was "no hood springs". Even the light ones. I don't run them on my 66 Fairlane with a R code hood. Just a prop rod. I also remember seeing some comment that you can "Un-bow" them to some extent. I think it was taking the springs off and placing weight (like 50 lbs) on the sides ( where it's bowed) for a couple of weeks. Might be worth searching for. Good luck, love the build.
@AndyKruseChannelАй бұрын
I too have heard this, but there was a bow in the hood when I bought it. I may pull the springs and let the hood sit over the winter with weight on it and see how that goes since I don't take it out in bad weather. :)

When I was into Shelbys in the 80s, bowing hoods were a common complaint. I bought a replacement hood from Branda and didn't have that problem. However, the hood was much much heavier than the original (which I broke after forgetting to latch the hood pins). I don't think that manufacturer is making hoods for Branda anymore. If I were to get one now I'd get the Cobra Automotive metal frame hood. Not sure if I'll ever do it.

I have a Maier Racing GT350 fiberglass hood. Granted, mine is about 35 years old, but it’s from Maier (picked it up from their shop in Hayward back in about 1988, maybe ‘89). No bow in mine - likely because I have never used hood hinge springs. I have always used a prop rod. I’d suggest you try that route. As for the rod, do not buy one - make one. Simple and cheap.
@AndyKruseChannel2 ай бұрын
Yeah, Maier does make good stuff, I'd buy from them again. But with my hood, it was bowed on day one, so those hinges aren't affecting it. Plus, I have the "lighter" hinges for fiberglass hoods. They're almost not strong enough to hold the hood up. :)

Like they told me in 1980 when I bought my hood from Maier Racing, "What do you expect for $400" They said bring it back and pick another one, I said OK, so I drove over 300 miles , from Oxnard to Hayward and the hood I picked was sitting on the old man Maiers Shelby, I said I want that one and I got that one, even it had a little problem area but what do you want for $400 dollars, right.
@jimfowler76282 ай бұрын
oh yeah, and I do not like hood pins, I forgot to put the hood pins in three different time that I remember, first time i saw the hood rise up a little and said Oh Sh-t, well the air caught it and lifted it up and f-cked the hinge plats up a little, 2nd time it ripped the hinge bolt plates right out of the hood, 3rd time it flew like a kite, My 1958 corvett had the same problem but it flew even higher, man I have had some fun.

Watts 3 link & coilovers? Just grabbed one of your master cylinder firewall braces a few days ago since I'm swapping out my MC. Figured it'd be a nice piece in there.
@AndyKruseChannel2 ай бұрын
I'm not sold on the Watts Link, but that's a bigger discussion than we can fit in this comment section. Mike Maier did a fantastic job explaining the short comings of the Watts Link in him latest "Friday Mornings at MMI, ep. 8" video. I do like the design of the Watts Link, that kind of mechanical stuff gets me excited, but I'd say the Panhard Bar does everything I need it to do, plus it's easier to install and cheaper. That MC Brace is gong to look awesome in your car! It's the sum of the parts, and this little gem is going to make braking just a little bit sweeter. On a side note, I still wonder if I should have done your paint scheme. I might be guilty of watching your videos a little more than I need to, your car just looks so good!

@@AndyKruseChannel Yep, makes sense. Regarding the paint, You've got the classic scheme and I wouldn't regret that one bit; it looks great. I think the metallic in the blue is what gives the car's lines a little more "character" over the wimbledon white. Besides, I'll likely be switching my scheme soon to the less common ivy green metallic w/ wimbledon white. Little more subtle, which I like. Look forward to seeing the rear suspension changes you make.
