My advice is to go MUCH slower in real life. It's obvious he went too fast and took a chunk out of the paper cone. I also saw no reason to cut out the dust cap (unless it was damaged). When I replaced my surrounds the cone remained very secure and didn't move at all. The spider held it in place firmly. I'd pass on the shims and use a tone generator as described elsewhere. It's a very satisfying project to do. 👍

It's good to see how relaxed you are when yo do this. I took the plunge today and am glad I did. It seems like a piece of cake. I refoamed two 8" woofers for a pair of Boston Acoustics A70s. After the first pair I'll bet it gets easier all the time. Take your time and it will come out right.

I understand everyone has their own methods of doing things . I always spray paint the cone after I remove the old surrounds with flat black to freshen them up , and I recommend applying the first layer of glue to the back side of the new surround . you will have plenty of time to do all and any adjusting . I also recommend applying the New Surrounds while playing the speaker at a low volume to make sure the sound is Not distorted . your video is well described and is very helpful . Thanks . Ray in Pa.

Modern speakers use a new formulation of foam that contains anti-fungal agents that prevent dry rot. Also, some surrounds are treated with a rubberized coating that shields the foam from humidity.
@justtheotherdave11 ай бұрын
If you are patient, you can completely remove the foam and the dust cap without cutting or scraping. Lots of reapplication of isopropyl with a cotton swab - drip it all around the basket, rub it on the cone (small amounts if the cone is absorbent, like paper), eventually the glue will soften and rub off. A craft knife blade might be needed to lift the dust cap once you have removed all visible glue - barely insert it (1/8" or a few mm) and lift slightly and work all the way around. Do not cut anything, just insert, lift, withdraw, move over, repeat. The voice coil wires will pass through the side of the cone near to where you are cutting - look at the side of the cone and you will see where the wires are. Using force to scrape the cone or tear off the dust cap as shown can crease the cone, and in my application, no matching dust caps were available (Parts Express didn't carry a kit for my speakers but I got foam surrounds and glue from a local repair shop).

Okay... I ordered the kit. I followed all your instructions perfectly. But what do you do when your neighbors start complaining because now you can finally turn your stereo up and enjoy the bass properly?

You sit back and enjoy a job well done! lol. Don't make the neighbors too mad though.

pva glue? no need to centre the cone by removing the dust cap as you can just move the cone so you cant feel it grating , i dont remove the dust cap unless its damaged
@siscili3338 жыл бұрын
+bongosrest okay... I was wondering this... would there be any harm in not doing this step even if the cone is not damaged?

I tried to refoam some B&W Drivers. Two of the Speakers have Kevlar cones and the other some type of plastic. I spread the glue and the glue dried before I could get the surround lined up. Made a real damn mess of my lovely speakers.

Looks like the next time this needs to be done...is a bit more complex. Guess using the paper dust cover might have been easier for future repairs.

Wondering how risky it is to glue to the old glue on the cone edge? I always carefully remove the old glue so I can reglue directly to the cone material itself.
@jacobmason4908 жыл бұрын
Try a little chisel next time on the basket. A lot easier than straping the tip of a utility knife
