With a final burst of speed in the last few strides, Pleasant Colony added the 106th Preakness today to his Kentucky Derby victory and needs only the Belmont Stakes to become the l2th winner of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown. Pleasant Colony surged to a one-length victory over Bold Ego, who had led from the start, as 74-1 Paristo, a supplemenatry nominee, finished third, two more lengths back. Pleasant Colony rewarded his backers in the record Pimlico crowd of 84,113 with $5 for each $2 bet. So thorough was his victory in this mile-and-three-sixteenths race that it seems unlikely that any of his 12 rivals could play spoiler in the Belmont, which is June 6.
