This was the consensus: Bob Baffert had two preternaturally talented horses, Point Given and Congaree. He already owned two victories as a trainer in the Kentucky Derby, and the 127th running of the race was his to lose. In the starting gate next to Point Given was Monarchos, a colt who most said had peaked in winning the Florida Derby in March after an electric move around the far turn.
But Monarchos, the big gray colt trained by John Ward, duplicated that move in almost Secretariat-like fashion today, ticking off the second-fastest winning time in the history of the mile-and-a-quarter Kentucky Derby, 1:59.97.
With the final quarter-mile remaining, Monarchos swept around the far turn and inhaled three, four, five, six horses, blew past Point Given, collared Congaree in midstretch and rushed off to a four-and-three-quarters-length victory over the long shot Invisible Ink. Point Given, the 9-5 favorite, was fifth.
