Paslode vs. Hitachi (Metabo HTP) Siding Nailer - Mistakes Were Made!

The TetraGrip nailer by Paslode is really a great tool for siding. Because the Hardinail's superior holding power, it does not need to hit the studs behind the sheathing to provide adequate grip. The ring shank nail fired by the Hitachi nailer, on the other hand, is longer and must hit a stud to provide adequate holding power. The downside to the longer ring shank nail is that if you miss the stud, you penetrate far into the cavity behind, and can damage air conditioning lines (like we did here) or plumbing or electrical runs.
We are using LP SmartSide which allowed us to pull off the siding in the affected area and reside without breaking the boards like we would have done with fiber cement.

A good way to remember the HPT (not HTP) part in Metabo HPT, it stands for Hitachi Power Tools

Hope the ac folks brazed it instead of solder it. I too like the tetra grip nails.

LOL... Jordan I did the exact same thing a number of years ago. Except I did it in my office with a 16ga finish nail when I was putting chair rail up. This was during the winter months, so heating season. And to boot, it was like Dec. in northern Utah. So the cooling season doesn't begin until around mid April or even May of the following year. Wife was like... What's up with the A/C? I called the A/C guy and he came out and recharged the system. The next day it still didn't work so he came out again and tested it. When we saw it was empty again he put it under pressure and it was a fairly decent leak. After thinking about a couple minutes I told him the only thing I could think of was that damn chair rail last Dec. So we went inside and I removed that one wall rail, measured the location of the line-set from a window and cut into the drywall behind where the chair rail was. Sure enough, nail hole in the line just like you showed here. My guy soldered it up and recharged the system. It worked like new again after that. We've since sold the house, but if the new owners ever remove that chair rail they will see a small rectangle hole in the drywall behind it with a repaired A/C line-set in the wall.

Well you can do that with LP siding cause of the weight issue and the length of the nail. If your siding with James Hardie then you never want to nail just into the wall sheathing. In time it will start sagging cause of the weight. In all honesty its best practice to nail into the studs even with LP siding so no issues occur later on.

Thanks for the video. It really helps to see others mistakes. I make some everyday. We learn from each other. FYI: It's still a gun. PC police can take a hike.

Doing my first ever siding job with LP smart side. Just did the far (not seen) dormer wall. Man what a pain. The main roof is 45˚ and the dormer roof is 20˚. There are no videos on how to actually side something like this. How do you start it? How to measure? Jigs to make it easier... Anyway, just an idea for a video that would be super helpful to diy'ers. I'm figuring it out before I do the "seen" side.

I don't understand your logic........There are siding nailers that use 1 1/4 or 2 1/2 nails . Has nothing to do with the name of the company?? it has to do with the nail lenght

I was going to buy one until I found out the price for a box of nails for that nailer ... approximately $350

I wonder if tetragrip would work with 1980s fiberboard sheathing or if it would get too little grip in the sheathing and be too short to provide any grip in the studs as well.

Ever try to fly somewhere with a handgun? You gotta go up to the check in counter and "declare" your firearm in a checked bag. You have to be very careful how you say it - do *not* just say "I have a gun"!

I do not like running linesets inside walls. It's a noise issue inside the house and all that insulation and you are going to run a hot liquid line and a cold suction line inside your wall. Why on earth would you think that's a good idea... Also in future when that system needs to be replaced you will be running the new lineset on the outside of the house. I don't like the look of a lineset outside but it is the practical choice. Also many times you end up with a scroll compressor that has a really annoying vibration that resonates into the lineset. There are dampers and ways to reduce it but it's best to just have it outside the building envelope for various reasons.
