That doesn't work all the time....so making that a default response is not a panacea. As a pilot, who happens to be Black, this was on the Captain to back up the cabin crew. In this case, the Captain should've reported the passenger as threatening and interfering with the crew....federal offense....and leave the douche bag to be tied up in court fighting the case. That's the best that can be done in these situations unfortunately....unless you're ready and prepared to catch a case, lose a job, or both.

Unless you've had specialized training, when there's an issue on a flight with an unruly passenger, the best thing is to stay out of the way. Allow the professionals to do their job. On ANY given flight, there are going to be military flying in civilian clothes, and air marshall, and the flight crew. Let them do what they're trained to do.

In a situation like this, all the other passengers have all the power. Even one person saying that's not okay is a hundred times more potent than the victim saying it. That's because one, it's not the person he is attacking, and two, he'll feel ganged up on. Three, solidarity teaches people right from wrong. Being reprimanded then excluded is enough to make a person think twice about their words and actions.
