Passenger falls out of car and rolls down hill during sporting trial in Gloucestershire

The unfortunate incident was captured today (December 4) during the ‘Gloucester 750 Sporting Trial’ which takes place annually on a hillside near Stroud. The passenger was uninjured. The rules of the sport state that sporting trial cars must have a driver and passenger who must remain within the seating area at all times. The objective is for the competitor to get to the top of the hill without stalling or going backwards. The event is run by the BTRDA (British Trial and Rally Drivers Association).

One unstated rule appears to be that while the driver can probably do his best job sober, this restriction does not apply to the passenger - and indeed, an entry gets extra unofficial points for style if their passenger is completely blootered.

With the sharpness of some of the turns a locked or welded diff would probably not be a good thing. It get the impression it's not supposed to be easy.😊 not like 4wd stuff where you spend megabucks modifying a 4wd to go up some steep rocks and then drive it up some steep rocks. This is budget stuff but it looks as if it takes some real skill.

That's part of the challenge. They do have back brakes that can be individually and separately applied to transfer the torque. It's very difficult at first!

Is the idea to make the cars have as little traction as possible then see who can get up the course? Like, if they wanted them to go up easily could they not put on some off road tyres or chains? Maybe they are not allowed. Could they not fit a limited slip diff? It seems they all have open diffs as most of them are "one wheeling". It's interesting. I never saw this kind of driving before.
