Drivers from across the UK took part in the annual Cotswold Clouds car trial today (February 5) - which included the notorious s-shaped ‘Crooked Mustard’ stage - a slippery, muddy, twisting uphill trail. Around 80 cars from pre-war to modern took part in the event organised by The Stroud & District Motor Club, but only a handful completed the Crooked Mustard climb. The Gloucestershire-based event has been running since 1950.

@@csdinc The tyres aren't permitted to have a tread block gap or tread depth more than 8mm (5/16 inch) and mud/snow tyres are prohibited even if they somehow meet that requirement, so choice is greatly restricted. Sporting trials cars (designed and built specifically for off road trials) usually have fiddle brakes; separate hand operated brakes for left and right driven wheels which are used as a kind of human controlled limited slip diff, but I don't think this event permits fiddle brakes. There has been for decades a little cottage industry of companies building kits and special cars for trials. I saw a couple of Trolls and the ones with a double grille are Dellows. Other than that any little sports car is worth a crack. The red 2 seater going up is a Marlin Roadster which is a kit car.

@Scott Edwards Thank you. I've been asking that for a while now, but haven't gotten more than "they're kit cars" or " I think, ". I love how they're not afraid to send cars that old with seamingly little fear over damage. Has anyone put a 2JZ in one of those trolls? Or is there a general sense of self-preservation at those?

@@afullgrownchild2402 I'd love to see a fully kitted out one try it. Imagine 750 hp through skinny tires. No amount of traction and stability control would be able to keep it stable.

Quite surprised the VW's didn't do better. This is the kind of thing they are sually quite good at, despite not being explicitly designed for it. A more agressive dirt tire and if possible a limited slip diff and I thing they'd have done better. Edit: A Mini moke also comes to mind, with four passengers. Even if it gets bogged down four guys and just lift it out and carry it.

the point of a trials car is to have the skinny road tires that it would normally drive on, adding off-road winter tires would make it took easy

So it looks like the keys to success are 1) a light car, 2) good suspension, 3) correct routing (go up the bank to the left, avoid prior skids), 4) moderation (no-one who rammed their engine got all the way up)

Not bad for such an old, "weak" car. Especially when loaded with an heavy load only on one side of the car (both persons) But i also feel bad to see such beautiful classics being destroyed and tormented so much like completely pushing the limiter. I mean beetle, MX-5, Morgan, Z4 and many other classics is hard to watch. I could not do this.
