Normally I would watch the Smithsonian channel when an Air crash investigation show was on but now I go to The FlightChannel, why, because it's just as detailed if not more with NO commercials and explains in depth exactly where it happened, why it happened and the results and changes made after the investigations and all of this in less than half the time but leaves nothing out. The Aircraft is shown with the right name, the right Aircraft, the correct weather before the incident, during and after. Thank you FlightChannel for your commitment to produce quality and informative video's and as always I want to thank you mostly for your hard work and for sharing these videos. The great thing about all of this is I can watch youtube on my 50" big screen TV and I do and in surround sound which just adds a little more to enjoyment of your video's, thank you again.👍 👍 👍 👍 👍

Had a friend booked on that flight. His car broke down on the way to Auckland and he missed the flight. Has the ticket framed on his wall. Thanks for telling the truth about this tragedy. The government and Air New Zealand not only blamed the flight crew but they also destroyed the career of the investigating judge who ruled against them and he died a broken man. A shameful and disgraceful period in the history of my country. Lost all faith and trust in politicians from that time on.

Inherent high risk. Sight seeing means flying low in a large jet: no. Mountainous area: no. that's the weirdest part of the whole thing, that someone programmed the plane to fly into Mount Erebus. was it a mistake that was meant for them to fly right over it rather than right into it? was it a training or practice programming that was never reversed due to incompetence? was it a hit on someone who was in the plane? guess we'll never know.

This crash was so awful, both for those who lost friends and family *and* for those who participated in the rescue/recovery/cleanup operations. First, the location precluded the recovery crews living anywhere but very near the crash site, so they were surrounded by this day in and day out for two months. Second, and horribly, the plane had caught fire upon impact and settled into the melt before this then refroze. They had to dig by hand into snow and ice that was polluted by the burned remains of both plane and crew. The recovery people talked about their wool gloves becoming black with "human grease". Many people who worked this crash suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress afterwards, and I can't blame them. A horrible tragedy all around.

Especially the team of police officers tasked with recovering the bodies of the dead. (go watch 'Operation Overdue' and you’ll see. I agree. Likewise when they they cartwheeled a DC8 down the runway at Auckland airport July 4 1966 1559 LT. Watching all day from a maintenance workshop when the aircraft was crew training doing touch and goes and bursting tyres. I actually saw this happening. The check pilot pulled back the throttle on takeoff to simulate an engine failure. however because of a design fault if the throttle is pulled back too fast the thrust reverse lever can be engaged. Thus there was a situation where on takeoff three engines were on takeoff power and one engine was on thrust reverse. I saw the aircraft slew around with wings vertical. One wing touched the runway and the aircraft cartwheeled down the runway ending in front of the departure lounge. It was tragic and burnt into my memory.

First the news on the radio that that contact had been lost with the flight and that it was overdue, then the announcement that it could not possibly still be in the air because it would have run out of fuel, then the discovery of that terrible black stain on the side of the mountain, then the long enquiry and the revelation of what had really happened. Phil Douglas air nz was doing regular sightseeing trips 1977-1979. If you read Wikipedia’s air NZ flight 901 . Good read. There is a good book and much discussion about this crash. It left Auckland Int 8am . On the previous flight Sir Edmund Hillary was a guide on board and he was meant to be on this flight. His good friend Peter Mulgrew went instead. An Australian airline has been doing the flights now . They use a 747-400ER since 1994. From Melb

EXCELLENT video! I am confused. I always thought that the Captain of the airplane was responsible for its navigation, no matter what. It is unimaginable that the airplane would have been operating in Antarctica without its own radar. One would think that Mount Erebus would have shown up as a giant return on the aircraft's radar, difficult to miss. And it's also difficult to imagine that a Captain would blindly follow a pre-programmed course anywhere, much less in Antarctica. It is also surprising that the airline would have assigned a pilot AND a first officer that had no experience on that route. Indeed, it sounds as though no flight crew on that aircraft had any experience in Antarctica! It is well known that operating any vehicle of any kind in an Arctic environment is hazardous at best. A lot of people died needlessly because of a series of stupid judgments.

Yeah it was really actually the airline who allowed sort of this sight seeing trip that was a niche of its. I believe they did have small regulations on it that they told thier pilots about but something on the day I believe was changed route wise and actually the planned route was altered in a way that made it dangerous. Thankfully none of this stuff happens today tho.

Gary Christenson. After the crash rescuers found the Pilots log book which they put with other things that they found. One rescuer a Policeman, noticed that after the officials had been in the tent the pages of the log book were missing. There is a fantastic Documentary on KZbin regarding those who went to the crash to get the bodies etc. The cover up was by the officials was shocking, lies after lies, luckily they did not get away with it. It was in no way the Pilots fault, it was the Companies fault. They gave the wrong coordinates which was written in the Pilots log book, thats why they took the pages.

"An orchestrated litany of lies" Justice Peter McMahon. Those words rung out across New Zealand and have been burned into the collective psyche of this nation since 1981. I was at high school when this accident happened and it changed us. We thought Air New Zealand was unstoppable, with a blemish free record. Unfortunately, it was completely owned by the NZ taxpayer so, it was in fact us that paid the costs and fines. To blame the flight crew and think they'd get away with it is beyond reprehensible. The commentator (akin to a tour guide) that is referred to was Peter Mulgrew. Peter was close friends with Sir Edmond Hillary and in fact, Sir Hillary was originally planned to be on this flight but had an overriding commitment in the states and Peter took his place. In 1974 (4 years prior to this crash), Sir Hillary's wife and 16 yr old daughter were killed in Kathmandu as passengers on a single engine Pilatus PC-6. After being told of the tragedy, Sir Hillary insisted on having a helicopter take him to the crash site, he was never the same. Ten years after NZ 901, in 1989, Sir Hillary marries June Mulgrew. She was Peter's widow.

I remember this. I was working on International HF at Sydney Radio at the time. We heard them outbound, IIRC, they were working Auckland not us, but we had strips for them, NZ901/910 (outbound/inbound) our supervisors had us calling and SELCALing them for hours, Auckland were calling on all their HF freqs as well (SP6 net same as Sydney) and everything Air NZ had in the air was calling them on company and ATC frequencies. They were still 'missing' when I went home, got home 30 min later and heard they'd officially run out of fuel, but we were pretty sure they were gone well before then. Very sad.

If you should have the time to make a revised version there would be some important corrections you might wish to make. -You might want to make it clearer that "sector whiteout" is not about snow in the air, or sand. It happens in clear air when light is refracting between cloud layer and the snow covered terrain, where they appear to blend together blotting out all surface definition -The crew's figure 8 descent was carried out entirely in clear air, as shown by the continuous photos taken by the passengers. At no point was flight 901 flying in cloud or in snow. I recommend the Gordon Vette book "Impact Erebus," where many pictures are reproduced. -The reason the commentator couldn't identify the terrain was because of cloud layer below them. Again, no snow or clouds at any time at the altitude of the plane. This satisfied the requirement of VMC conditions, where you are never allowed to enter cloud. -sector whiteout also produces the insidious illusion of a horizon line, lulling the crew into believing they had unlimited clear air for 40 miles or more ahead. -might also want to mention that the terrain over which they were flying mirrored almost exactly the terrain they were originally supposed to have been over. It's this coincidence of terrain, and the false horizon line that was the source of the crew's confidence. cheers

In 1979 the tech to know exactly where you were over Antarctica did not exist, GPS wasn't available there (and wouldn't be used by planes for another decade), the continent had no VOR beacons yet, and compasses don't work, the only way to find out your location all the way down there was to correlate your movements with your position on a map but if your flight computer had been given the wrong data to begin with then where you think you are on that map is always going to be wrong.

Nothing to see but a whole lot of ice and snow, and any possible landing places in case of an emergency, thousands of miles away. I don't know why this crazy idea was ever even thought of, let alone marketed. Then, they change the flight plan programmed, and don't tell the crew? I’m not sure if anyone has brought this up, but a heartbreaking irony here is that Antarctica is technically a desert and barely gets 2 inches of precipitation a year. Snow is infrequent. Next, I’ve seen this asked after many different videos but I’m not sure if a complete answer has ever been given: why does it take so long for the GPWS to alert? I realize there are high speeds involved, however, if there’s going to be a warning system shouldn’t it start alerting when there is still time to actually “pull up?” 😢💔

Extreme quality and precision on the information as always. It’s extremely hard to actually explain the whole incident in depth without leaving anything out whatsoever in such a short time. Also the on screen graphics are very realistic and satisfying to watch. You’re so underrated keep it up.

I was sixteen years old when this happened. I remember the "breaking news" (pretty much unheard of in NZ) saying an Air New Zealand flight was overdue from a sightseeing flight to Antarctica. This was unheard of in NZ. Air NZ was considered at that time, to be the single best airline in the world. With one stupid decision made by management (who else?) Air-NZ and the nation were changed forever. It is something I will never forget.

Excellent video, as always. What about the us navy radar? It was mentioned at the beginning and it seemed like a factor that influenced the crew decision to go lower.

I watch a lot of plane crash investigations, but I never heard of this one until now. It looked so real. Thanks.

Hey man absolutely love your videos, I’ve been recommending them to everyone I know and they love them too, I really appreciate the effort and hard work and your talent that goes into making these vids. I was wondering if you were ever going to do a video on Japan Airlines Flight 123 sometime? those pilots did an amazing job keeping the plane up in the air for as long as they did considering what went wrong. Apparently they ran several simulations of the planes malfunctions/scenario with several highly trained pilots at the wheel and none of them could keep the plane up as long as the crew of flight 123 did - True heroes!

Like many others on that day I found it hard to come to terms with. I had flown Air New Zealand before and indeed, after this terrible air crash. The flight crews on these flights were so totally down-to-earth and a joy to speak to. I hope those I met on those journeys survived but of course we mourn those that died. I hope they can Rest in Peace, with all my heart.

Damn, I’d be so down to do a sight seeing flight over Antarctica. That sounds like such an incredible experience.

If a plane is inverted and is about to crash into terrain, is it programmed to warn the crew by saying "Push down!" or is it still "Pull up!", bearing in mind the latter would mean they'd be being instructed to crash into the ground even quicker.
