The East Midlands HSTs are fitted with VP185 engines, which make a screaming sound at speed, whilst the FGW and East Coast HSTs are fitted with MTU engines, which are quieter.

There's plenty of variety on this small island so you wouldn't have to travel far to see all these different types of trains once you're over here :)
@thestargateking7 жыл бұрын
ACETrainsUK there's good variety in Australia too, I'd argue that perhaps we even have more variety, but it's spread out over MASSIVE distances, in the U.K. Just go to all the London terminus stations in one day and you'll probably see the majority of the trains that the UK has, just missing some welsh, Scottish and freight and pacers
@ACETrainsUK7 жыл бұрын
Exactly, as much as I'd like to visit Australia to see the trains over there, it is the issue that the different lines are a very long distance apart, therefore I would need to plan out an itinerary that covers the whole country lol
@thestargateking7 жыл бұрын
ACETrainsUK go to Cairns Brisbane Sydney Melbourne Adelaide and Perth and you'll see the majority of the trains staying in those cities, some trains for nsw and Queensland you'll need to venture further out, for NSW it's a particular type of railcar but you don't have to leave the train network to see it, for Queensland you have to go 6-7 hour by rail to see it as it's super long electric coal trains, there's a few other freight to see but there's no real way (with public transport) to get to them, I'm not sure what they have in Tasmania but Tasmania is often ignored by most Australians, I know they have some network but I'd probably only go for the heritage steam trains, you can get to all the cities mention by rail which would fill in the rest of the gaps for freight, I'd start in Perth, you'd only need a day there to really see the commuter network (they only have 2 types) then I'd get the train that goes as far as Kalgoorlie, as it's unique to that route, everywhere else uses a different train for long distance, also it's a good place for freight as you wait for the train to Adelaide, stop off at Adelaide, your choice if you want to go to Darwin, the train you'll get to Darwin will be the only train you'll see up there, there's a suburban network in Adelaide, wouldn't take long to see it all, then you have the choice to go throughout to NSW by waiting for the train that you got off, or go to Melbourne instead, Melbournes network is still not as large, but really you should go for the trams, then head up to Sydney, you can go to Canberra but the train that does the journey you'll see at Sydney, the only Train that you won't see you'll see if you head up to Hamilton station, then you get the train to Brisbane, the commuter network all funnels into the city so spend a day and you'll see all commuter and freight, there's a light rail network on the Gold Coast that you'll need a train to get to, there's a light rail in Sydney, but you don't need to travel far to get to it, Brisbane has a great train heritage program with at least 1 heritage tour per month, Brisbane is my local city and you can see in my channel everything Brisbane has to offer, then I'd either go straight for the train to emerald/Blackwater, or go to Rockhampton first and spend a few hours or days there first, as Denison street is very cool (it's where the north coast mainline runs down the middle of a street) i have yet to go there myself, but I definitely will, at emerald or Blackwater you can see the 2km long electric freight trains, I think Blackwater may be better but I have to check, then when the train comes back then you stop off at Rockhampton again and wait for the train to cairns, there's another train Townsville that you can look at but it's the same locomotive that you would've seen already by now with the same carriages as the train to Blackwater but just smaller, similar to the train to Toowoomba, then at cairns the rest of the trains that you haven't seen yet will come to cairns, but it would be a lot better to go on them as the train journey from cairns to Kuranda is just amazing and one I Have to do myself, there will be only 1 train left and that's the gulf lander, it's hard to get to as it's not connected to any other rail network but it's near cairns, then there's all the heritage locomotives all over the place that are hard to get to as it requires them to be running

For those trains that are *not* evidently electrically powered from overhead line or third rail, I do not see any fuel-burn exhaust otherwise generated from the locomotives....so are these still diesel powered, or gas turbine? Otherwise, a good, consistent compilation of trains here.
@ACETrainsUK3 жыл бұрын
The non-electric trains are all diesel-powered. Gas turbine technology never really took off beyond prototype models on the UK rail network, but hydrogen and battery-powered trains are actively being trialled in the UK now for a non-diesel alternative. Thanks for watching.

Impressive how fast even the non-electrics go. If I saw one of our Chicago IL USA region (diesel-powered) commuter trains going this fast, I would have to wonder if I was dreaming. Brits have ours beat by at least 25 to 30 MPH.
@ACETrainsUK3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Britain's strategy has historically preferred the development of lightweight, high-speed diesel trains instead of investing in widespread electrification, hence the fast diesel trains we have over here.

Having watched this vid and the frightening proximity of train to platform edge, I’m starting to accept that the American habit of sounding the train horn, from about 10 mins out, is a reasonable safety advance.
