To some, life can sometimes feel boring, or even depressing during the long, bone-chilling Alaskan winters. That is why it's so important to find winter hobbies to keep busy during these dark and freezing months. In this video, we show how we've been passing time this winter. We've recently started ice fishing, and in this video, Matt catches his first fish in Alaska: a 19.5 inch rainbow trout! We've also been cooking and baking more this winter, so we baked a homemade turkey pot pie, tried our hand at some poor man's caviar (trout roe), and baked up the delicious rainbow trout Matt caught.

Hi, we are Emily and Matt, and welcome to A Glimpse of Alaska! In September 2022, we (along with our puppy Aurora) made the nearly 5,000 mile drive from our home in Florida to our new home: Alaska. We created this channel to document and share our adventures in this wonderful state.
We appreciate each and every person who spent time out of their day to watch this video! If you enjoyed this video, please consider liking and subscribing to our channel. We will be continuing to document all of our Alaskan adventures including hiking, fishing, gardening, working on our homestead, traveling in our truck camper, and so much more!

Love your "free" raised beds and recycling the wood from pallets. Years ago, when my husband and I were planting an acre garden, we also planted potatoes. We cut the potatoes into smaller pieces with each piece having a couple sprouts on it. This way a potato with several sprouts on it goes further, rather than putting a whole potato in each hole.

Good morning from Godley Texas, nothing better than waking up to wildlife in the yard. Glad to see Mr. Buddy was on site. "FISH ON" love it. Great set-up for fishing. Terrific way to spend time together. You fileted the trout like a pro. Pleased to see the canned chicken stock was used. Emily is a true caviar eater 😊 Tasty looking trout 👍 Thanks for inviting us into your life. Live life to the fullest. Stay safe and happy travels 😎

Oh my how lucky were you. I follow Pescatarian diet so that fish is amazing. Hmm, so many ways to cook it, fried, baked or fill it with stuffing in bbq weather wrapped in foil and cooked that way. Delicious. Tip: Also, I solved the problem of slipping cutting board in my house by cutting a rubber bookshelf liner to slightly smaller size and then if you lay it textured side up and put board on top it will stop moving for wooden board. Way to go!

Great video guys. 2 tips though, 1st put a damp pot towel or dish cloth under the chopping board and 2nd for the amount of roe you had you used to mix ch salt and also you should have rinsed them twice to remove the excess salt. But rainbow trout roe is very nice and very healthy for you too.

Really really nice fish! That would have dang near been considered a steelhead here on the west coast. Just some tips for you guys, female salmonoids (trout being one) have short snouts/jaws and males have longer snouts/jaws......you can look it up to get a better idea, that way you can tell what you have to see if you want to keep it or not. Fish quality is much better in a male (buck) than a female (hen) because of so much of a females calories go into egg production. Also caviar is best when eggs are close to fully developed, and those were quite a ways from that on the fish you caught. Makes a lot of difference in taste. Great job, so glad u got a nice one.

if you cook the veggies after the meat, the veggies clean up the bits of turkey that are burnt and caked on the pan. (although it looks like you didn't cook the meat to that point.... but I highly recommend getting some brown (caramelization) on the meat.... really yummy flavor!).... but as the veggies cook they get up all the left over caramelized bits up (which are usually hard to clean anyway, so it works out great!) and the flavor carries through in the sauce.

Good morning from Upstate New York. After working in the Sea Food business for many years, the best way to cook and eat Salmon Roe, is to leave it in the caseing and fry it. Rinse it off with cold water, pat it dry alitte and roll it in a flour and pan fry it in a Unsalted butter about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Taste really good done that way.
