Congratulations Lachlan for being one of the first reviewers in the entire world to give us a very detailed review of this new unit from Burson. They knew you would do a nice job on the review for the Burson GT, so they sent one to you. They have a lot of confidence in you. I absolutely loved the intro! Lachlan I love your reviews and this one has become a ‘classic’. I have all but ordered the GT to pair with Yggy+ OG and Susvara all based on your thorough and thoughtful reviews. While op amp rolling may not be necessary or recommended for this amp, there is an ENORMOUS amount of posts on Head-Fi about doing so, with many claiming different sonic benefits. I don’t think it needs a review on your part focused on that, but it emphasizes the nearly- infinite flexibility of these Burson amps and the difficulty of comparing the GT to other amps on the market for which even the possibility of op amp rolling isn’t a feature. I have the opportunity to trade-in my 3XP (also bought after watching your reviews) but I love it so much I’m not sure I can bring myself to do it. Go Burson!

Wait until you get into tube rolling, switching between (for example) Electro Harmonix tubes for Mullards, or JJ's for Tung Sol's, etc. It can get to be addictive. Pretty soon you'll have a box with a couple dozen tubes in it. And that's nothing. Some tube folks have hundreds of tubes in their collection. Have fun on the tube side of things. Enjoy the music.

I have just a couple of questions if you don't mind answering them. 1. Would a Schiit Bifrost 2 DAC be a noticeably limiting factor paired with Soloist 3X GT? I can't afford "endgame" amp and DAC at the same time... 2. How do you feel the Soloist GT would match with either ZMF Atrium or Verite? I know you mentioned the Autuer, and you have listened to the others I mentioned as well. I know the Burson would have zero problem driving them of course. I would be upgrading from a Jotunheim 2, which I've greatly enjoyed. As usual an excellent and informative review, thank you Lachlan!
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
Happy to answer 🙂 The Bifrost 2 will be the limiting factor in the short term, but the upgrade will still be a big step from the Jotunheim 2 (no knock on the Jot 2 - the GT is a way more expensive amp). Don't let that stop you upgrading though. You can always upgrade the DAC later if you want to. As for the headphones, the GT would be great with either/both ZMF headphone, but I personally prefer the Verité with a tube amp because the Verité is so fast that the tube helps to give it more presence/body. The Atrium is a brilliant match with the GT though.

@@PassionforSound Last couple of questions re Soloist GT: I got one several days ago, and overall it is pretty stunning! Amazing detail, clarity, and sound stage, even with a Bifrost 2. It seems to have total control of the drivers in the headphone... I did want to ask you about the fan. Mine runs at a constant speed, fixed rate. Did the fan on yours run at a fixed speed? Since it is a computer fan I was under the impression it was variable speed. Is that incorrect? I do wish it was a bit quieter, as I am in a quiet setting when I listen... But I can't hear it at normal listening levels. Coming from several different Schiit amps (Jot 2, Lyr 3, Valhalla 2) the Burson seems to have less impactful bass. It does slam hard, and is very controlled. But it just seems like the Schiit amps have more noticeable bass dynamics. What do you think? At first I thought it was perhaps more the case with ZMF headphones since the amp is very low output impedance and they are high impedance, but the Jot 2 is also low output impedance. Plus I noticed the same phenomenon with Focal Clears on the Burson vs Schiit. I'm sure both Burson and Schiit measure absolutely flat frequency response fwiw. Any thoughts? I ask you because I trust your reviews and find them super informative. Thank you!
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
Glad you're enjoying the GT! The fan does run at a constant speed because (as I understand it) they've tuned it to run at less than full speed and there is a consistent need for cooling from the amp because it doesn't scale the heat output like a computer where processing demands can vary and therefore heat output too. As for the Schiit vs Burson comparison, my take on it (based on what I've heard across heaps of gear) is that the Schiit amps are deliberately tuned to be fun. It means the Soloist GT is technically more accurate IMO, but that doesn't mean it's a better tuning because I do also love the sound of the Schiit amps I've tried.

Good work on the vid, Lachlan! A bit shady about the “believers of the amp power myth” hahaha but I respect your take and candor.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Wasn't meaning to be shady 🙂 just saying that this has the same power output as speaker amps provide to headphones so those that feel the need for speaker amp power can comfortably buy this instead. I am, however, still trying to get that myth to end though because I see so many people spend insane amounts of money on speaker amps with no real benefit and significant challenges like limited volume range, higher noise floor, etc. For the same money (or often quite a bit less) they could buy a high quality dedicated headphone amp like a Sparkos Aries or Soloist GT and have much better usability along with equivalent or maybe better sound.
@jasonp15683 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound I think it’s also possible there’s unexplained mystery with the Susvara drivers, that many people can hear that they can squeeze more out of the Sus with more power than what Susvara’s paper specs require. Perhaps that’s why one can probably hear Susvara best out of Hifiman’s own EF1000 specifically designed for the Sus, which has more power than sensible on paper.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
It all comes back to the quality of the amplifier being used (i.e. quality, not quantity). Part of my point was that most amps actually have plenty more power than the Susvaras need. They need less than 500mW for loud listening levels so anything more than a watt is overkill (not saying that it's bad, just more than needed). I can't stress enough that every time someone says X power amp with 50W sounded better with Y headphone amp with 2W, it's no different than saying A headphone amp with 1W sounded better than B headphone amp with 1W. It's about the quality of the amp circuit, not the power output (unless grossly underpowered so the amp is running at its limits)
@jasonp15683 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound I think there just used to be a dearth of headphone amps that could drive the Susvara several years ago, and at the time the only other options are speaker amps that are capable. Folks learned that instead of spending 8k on a powerful enough headphone amp, there are very good speaker amps that cost 1k which could sound better. I know, I chose a Burson Timekeeper over a Bakoon 13R, and the Burson sounded better to me with better bass and grip at only 750usd used. But now, the younger headphone amp technology is catching up with the more established power amp tech, at better prices, and therefore it will only be a matter of time before the community naturally gravitates towards headphone amps for TC/Susvara once more.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
That's a really good point and may well be part of the genesis of that way of thinking. I agree that modern headphone amps are massively improved in power, quality and price over the offerings from not that long ago. Great point

On the subject of susvaras, i went back to watch you A90+D90 video and you didnt mention them at the time, but seeing as this has enough power for them at what problably is 6 or so W at 62ohm, would you consider or have experienced that the A90 on 4+w at same load considering you werent using this amp on more than 20% of its capacity.
@blejzerosamigos61153 жыл бұрын

I agree about the A90. It's very limiting in the sense that it creates a slightly unnatural sound and flattens the soundstage. If you really want a measurement focussed amp that's built for ultra-low distortion then it's one of the best, but the ultra-low distortion isn't the be-all and end-all

For those of us who have a DAP with a 4.4 o/p and a custom-made (very expensive) cable it would mean not having to use an interconnector. Definitely the tonality is more neutral with the GT. I pre-ordered from Bloom Audio after I saw your review, and mine came with the 5 amp Supercharger power supply and a Cool Stand. I don't seem to have the problems you described with settings menus. Maybe they modified the interface a bit. I think I'll only need to use low gain. I first set up the amp near my seated position, and the fan was audible with open-backed headphones. So I moved the amp to the limit of my arm's reach, and now I don't notice the fan. In pre-amp mode it works well with my KEF LS50 powered speakers.

@@PassionforSound My DAC is a Qutest, connected to the GT with 0.5m high quality copper interconnects, that have always sounded neutral to me. There were times when I preferred the Meze copper upgrade cable with the Soloist 3X also. I think I often preferred the silver cable with the Soloist 3X, for enhanced detail and soundstage. With the GT, that enhancement is not needed, and the silver makes the sound too bright to me.

Is there any improvement in the bass and overall musical weight as a result of more power when comparing the GT to the XP? I noticed there is only mention of improved detail and soundstage.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Bass and musical weight don't equate to power, but the GT does maybe sound a bit more solid and authoritative because of its smoother character. I.e. that slight treble overemphasis from the 3XP is gone and therefore the bass has a stronger place in the mix.

I think both are amazingly good amps. The Mainline is still the best tube headphone amp I've ever heard and it's incredibly versatile. I'm not sure it's definitively better than the Soloist, but they're definitely on the same kind of level, just different. It's not about the amount of power, Dobrin, it's about the quality of that power. It’s interesting and a bit insulting to your critical viewers like myself when in one hand the 3XP is amazing, wonderful, wow, just excellent and THEN when given the step up product from Burson, all of a sudden there is a “treble sizzle, a little to much treble in the 3XP” - which one is it kind sir? - when folks have to spend their hard earned money, months of savings to buy a product they need and require absolute clarity in statements, - just sharing what others are too afraid to bring up - thank you
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
There's no such thing as the perfect product, Majid. The 3XP is an amazing amp and one that I have no intention of selling any time soon, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. In isolation, the Soloist 3XP is an amazing amp and better than anything else I've tried at the price. When you roll op-amps or compare to some more expensive gear though, you can hear where the minor imperfections lie. This is true for every product at every price level no matter how good it is - there will always be ways that each product could be improved, but those ideas are also subjective so what personal taste and system synergy are also important factors

How much difference between 3XP with Grand Tourer ?
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
It's a significant difference - maybe 10%? (I hate putting numbers to subjective things)
@nicktan45302 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound There is nothing wrong with because at the end of the its called subjective impression. But of course I understand the need to not mislead audience. 10% is not enough to justify but if we use something like LCD or Susvara, maybe that 10% goes to 50% ? Something like that ?
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
That's where the numbers are tricky. Once you reach a certain point, the amount of improvement decreases in relation to the money spent. What I know is that the GT is absolutely worth the extra, but only if you're running flagship level headphones. Anything from say an Arya, Focal Clear MG, Empyrean, etc. and above will show significant improvement, but I wouldn't recommend it as an upgrade for say the Sundaras, HD650, DT1990, etc. They're all great headphones, but you'd get a better gain by upgrading that level of headphone with the Soloist 3XP than going to the GT. Hopefully that clarifies things.
@nicktan45302 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Yes diminishing returns and somewhat placebo effects, however hence, I mentioned if were to use something like LCD or Susvara, how much 'better' subjectively of the GT improve from the Soloist. I hope the Soloist + J2 would be a good combo. GT would make me go broke.
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
Stick with what you can afford and enjoy it, Nick. There's no point adding a GT with the J2 as the DAC. You're better off upgrading the J2 for your next purchase. Something like a Bifrost 2 would be a great upgrade.

Is this the best amp for the Susvara?
@PassionforSound Жыл бұрын
I'd say it's definitely one of the best. I know lots of people go for speaker amps, but then you've got to be so careful with volume or risk destroying your headphones and/or ears. I'd stick to the Soloist GT myself. 🙂
@olenronning5868 Жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Thanks. I'm also considering the Ferrum OOR or the Hugo TT2 with XLR adapters (?) which would save the complexity of then finding a top-tier DAC to mate up to the amp.

what about replace 6 vivid with 6 sparkos 2590dual on 3gt
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
You could potentially do that, but given the GT already outperforms the Sparkos Aries, I wouldn't expect improvements and honestly, the GT is pretty much perfect so why change anything?

@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 3602 can improve the Soloist (although I don't agree with changing all four V6 op-amps). That said, the GT is a different amp and different op-amps will suit different circuits and even different systems so there's no guarantee it will be an improvement. My sense from my comparison of the Aries and Soloist GT is that the GT is likely best left alone.

Hi, do you know if this Burson can move the Hifiman Arya Stealth in low gain with authority? (with an input of 2V from the dac)? And if is noisy in high gain with the Arya Stealth? I'm asking because the new Conductor 3X GT just have two levels of gain, and the Burson Conductor 3XR / Soloist3XP are noisy with very sensitive headphones if you use high gain, like Beyerdynamic T5.
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
You should generally match the gain and the headphone so I'd be using the gain that has your comfortable listening level at around 30-60% of max volume (tending lower if there is more than one mode available). The GT has plenty of power for use in low gain and should cause no issues with noise
@rossfletcher27243 жыл бұрын
Given that it has a substantial price tag, it's hard to understand why Burson have chosen to install such an unfriendly control knob mechanism. I can imagine for those who like to change parameters often , it would be a huge turnoff. You have to wonder why such an insane amount of unnecessary power. Less power, less heat and perhaps fewer dollars? But lesser performance? Perhaps we should ask Burson
@mfgillia76063 жыл бұрын
Likely because many complained about the prior knob and wanted a way to increase volume much quicker with less skipping. Check out Zeos video review of the Soloist for more details.

It sounds like they introduced the notchless wheel after people complained and then, based on my conversation with them, they struggled to perfect the wheel due to COVID and lockdowns making things difficult

@@PassionforSound Hopefully they can improve upon it with firmware updates slowing down the volume dial sensitivity once the menu is activated.
@rossfletcher27243 жыл бұрын
Lachlan, from your comments it appears they have a worse problem than the one of the notched control taking too much effort to go from 0 to 100. leaving the knob as a volume control alone and moving the menu selection function elsewhere seems the most sensible

My Soloist 3XP also has has the smooth volume dial with no notches and jumps easy doing the settings. Bought it 2 months ago so looks like they've gone to smooth for some reason. I do like though that I can spin the dial easily for larger volume changes, usually spin it down to change headphones then spin it back up again. It's not loose enough to spin by itself though, more I put my finger loosely on it and just roll it in circles.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, that must have been a change based on feedback from people who didn't like the notchy wheel. They've both got pros and cons
@aceofspades66673 жыл бұрын
My 3XP has a notchy wheel which works great. My only issue with the 3XP is the remote performance at say 7-8 feet away. I have to click several times for volume control to work. Yes I’ve chanced the batteries as well. I found this to be an issue with conductor 3XP as well. Either way a very minor quibble

That's a shame about the volume range and probably a fair concern for anyone using the device as a pre-amp

wow a fan in an headphone amp ... common.. cant we mod this out?
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
No, the amp would overheat because of the specialised power supply they're using. I explained pretty clearly in the video why the fan isn't an issue. Maybe take a look if you haven't already.
@lextr31103 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound than they should have an external power supply with a long extension cord to hide it far away haha. Or they could have a 140mm nexus installed with low rpm.. mostly silent.. anyway at any prices, even small fan noise is unacceptable. They could offer less powerful smaller cheaper fanless dual mono version at least..
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
The heat is generated by the internal power management, not the main power supply which is external. If you don't like it, that's fine. To me, the fan noise is VERY quiet and inaudible when listening to music. Every designer makes decisions with their own logic and reasoning so trying to redesign an amp without understanding the rationales for their design choices isn't overly productive. There are lots of other excellent amps on the market that are silent (like the Sparkos Labs Aries) so that choice is available

You should have blind tested this against cheaper amps, like entry level cheap and any others in between before you used it to see both whether you could tell them apart and which one you preferred. But of course you didn't do that because this glorified slightly enhanced volume knob is definitely all it's cracked up to be and you haven't almost certainly drank the coolaid.

He could already clearly describe differences with Soloist 3X, what’s the point of comparing a 2500usd amp vs a cheap one? Who does that? Wrong channel, you probably would enjoy Zeos’ reviews instead. Would love for you to upload a vid show him exactly how you’d do it. Good luck!
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Wesley, this idea that all amps sound the same is completely ridiculous. EVERY component in an amplifier has influence over its sound whether it's a capacitor, resistor, transistor, volume control, etc. The idea that two devices made of different components (regardless of price) will sound the same just shows that people really haven't taken the time to understand how amps are made and how the individual parts work (e.g. varying tolerances at different frequencies, slew rates, etc.)
@wesleyleigh40633 жыл бұрын
@@jasonpash No of course bc who needs empiricism and objectivity when you can have fantasy? My point isn't that there isn't a difference but that it's morally dubious to plug absurdly price items that do close to nothing - how was that not obvious?? You sound awfully defensive. Also Zeos isn't perfect either, noone is or ever will be, but Imagine this guy in his place? We'd be approaching cult status.

@@PassionforSound Yes but is the difference audible when you don't know what you're listening to, and to an extent that you care? You like everyone partake in this hobby because it brings you joy to hear something you like. You might at times wish to strip back what you consider a particular bias or taste of yours for objectivities sake, but wouldn't you care to know yourself what actually, veritably interests you, not just what you think does? Humans are very susceptible to suggestion, and people in this community aren't willing to blind test simply because it has them relinquish their most cherished ability. I'm not saying the circuitry isn't different and that we humans react to the impact of some more than others, this is cornerstone to the modern importance of Neve preamps and the famed LA2A compressor, both of which have elaborate circuitry. but the community deserves extensive, standardised blind testing.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
I've been doing this for 15+ years now (reviewing gear) and there are times where the differences are minimal or non-existent, but it's never with amps. DACs are MUCH more sonically similar and I call that out when I hear it. There is no need at all to compare amps blind because the differences between many of them are large and go way beyond the potential impact of biases.
