Americans visit the German city YOU said NEVER go to!

We had a few of you recommend to go see Erfurt as well as another city in the area, Bad Langensalza...however, we also had just as many if not more say "why would you ever go there?!" This made us even more interested to go and see who was more right, the people who said to go or the people who said, "don't go there". Oh, and we also met up with some surprise guests we are excited to show you! 😊

If you didn´t know a "Krämer" in medi eval times sold goods coming from elsewhere no matter what that were and from where those came from (the neigboring region or from overseas) and all those "foreign goods" were labeled in medi eval times as "Kram"...and as long those goods where sold in negligable amounts then the salesman was a "Krämer"..but if the salesman was a whole sale merchant selling in big amounts he was called a "Menger" derived from "Menge" meaning "quantity/amount" But very later till today the meaning of "Kram" changed into "low budged stuff or low quality stuff" and deriving from that today in private everyday´s use the expression "Kram" is used for stuff you don´t necessarily need and is therefore stored in cellars or in the attic.

Ihr MÜSST Weihnachten im Erzgebirge erleben. Die Montanregion Erzgebirge ist Weltkulturerbe. Dresden, Annaberg-Buchholz und Seiffen sind vielleicht die Speerspitze für den Tourismus, aber zwischen Plauen und Dresden gibt es zwischen Totensonntag und Silvester so viel zu sehen und zu erleben... ich versuche gar nicht das alles aufzuzählen! I can agree: the Erzgebirge (ore mountains) in Saxony are the most beautiful place in December. They have a long tradition of wood carving, warm yellow lights and decoration like Weihnachtspyramiden (Christmas pyramids) and Schwibbögen/Lichterbögen (light arches). It's so stunning to drive trough those little villages when it has snowed and it's getting dark slowly. In almost every window is some sort of decoration. The Christmas markets in old mountain towns like Schwarzenberg are so cozy.

The Christmas Market "Giebel Leuchten" in Lüneburg (Lower Saxony) is beautiful , but it is still unclear whether it will take place this year beacuse of Corona. Hamburg also has a charming Chistmas Market in front of Rathaus, but in the evening hours it is too crowed. You cannot move one metre. It is "zu ungemütlich" (as we Germans say) to have Bratwurst and Glühwein there. Better go there in the afternoon during the week .

FYI: The Erfurt Cathedral hosts the biggest free-swinging medieval bell of the world, called "Gloriosa", which happens to be one if not the most beautiful sounding church bell of the world.

If you enjoy the rather smaller German towns with medieval layout, halftimbered houses and coublestone streets, my tips would be: - plan a road trip to the Alsace, for example along the "Alsatian Wine Route" (which should be not to far from Ramstein). Nearly every town or village has beautiful halftimbered houses, often city walls or a castle nearby. - Wernigerode and Quedlinburg on the northern edge of the Harz mountains - Celle and Lüneburg in the northeastern part of Lower Saxony - Wismar and Lübeck on the Baltic shore

Krämerbrücke actually translates to "trader's bridge". Churches from the Middle Ages that were converted into protestant churches lost their decoration during something called the Bildersturm (iconoclasm) in the 16th century. They got painted in plain white instead. Erfurt was in a delicate situation during its history. It belonged to the state of the Diocese of Mainz. The Archbishop of Mainz was one of the Duke Electors of the Holy Roman Empire and thus one of the highest Fürsten in Middle Age Germany. The town itself went protestant during the Reformation, leading to constant conflict between the citizens and the representative of the catholic Archbishop. That's why in the 17th and 18th, there was a huge fortress built on top of the hill beside the Cathedral hill, the Citadel Petersberg. From there, cannons could bombard the whole city of Erfurt, and with this constant thread, subdue the town.

You should visit Deana & Phil in their (and my) hometown. It is home to one of the oldest town halls in Germany from 1303 and the city has been spared the destruction of the war.

Well, ya, it rains in Germany. But you pushed through it; Bravo. I've watched several of Deana & Phil's vids. My attention usually goes to Deana's vids since I am also an American living in Germany with a German spouse. You've already seen places I haven't been to yet - so, I'm going to use you as a pseudo travel reference for them. But after 25 years here, I've seen quite a bit. But, heh, there is so much to see, not just in Germany, but in Europe as well. It would take life-times to experience it all. Bad Langensalza is a major battle site from 1866 (when the American Civil War had just ended), that terminated the Kingdom of Hanover (which had formed a personal union with Great Britain from 1714 to 1837). Two of my great-great-grandfathers fought there for Hanover against the Prussians. The army of Hanover won, literally a Pyrrhic victory, but since they were cut off from their supplies they had to surrender to other advancing Prussian armies, that had encircled them. East Germany is beautiful and there is so much to discover, especially for West Germans. I highly recommend to visit Arnstadt as well (a Johann Seb. Bach site and the historical puppet city "Mon Plaisir" in the Neues Palais museum), Mühlhausen (where Thomas Müntzer had been executed, a former but more radical and violent fellow of Martin Luther, and where you can find a statue of the constructor of New York's Brooklyn Bridge, Roebling) and last but not least Gotha (Schloß Friedenstein, a palace of the early Baroque period, very different from the later Versailles Style, home of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the present ruling noble family of the United Kingdom). The protestant church buildings of the North are much less decorated then the overloaded southern baroque and rokokko style ones. It's the clarity and purity of their architecture, which makes their special kind of beauty. The best example is probably the 1,000 years old pre-romanesque church of Saint Michael in Hildesheim (where the Australian KZbinr Jacob from "Punting for the people" lives - in the city, not in the church).

Oh, I love Erfurt so much. Beautiful very old city and lots to see. The most friendly people of Germany live in Thüringen as I found out. Oh, you Americans missed the most important part of Erfurt 😁😉 In Erfurt there are all the figures of kika. German kids TV channel. Sendung mit der Maus. Und der blaue Elefant. Both got statues in Erfurt. Forget about those youtubers. Watch die Maus. You will learn how they manufacture all kind of things. Most famous German TV show as generations grew up with it.

It's really strange: When we were on holiday near Erfurt a few years back the locals of all people always asked us why on earth we would spend our vacataion in Thuringia! We were so confused, because it was really nice with lots of beautiful old architecture.

I live 20km away from Deana and Phil in Thüringen. :D Erfurt, yeah it's a little bit underrated, but nice city. ;) 2 things you should know about Erfurt: In the cathedral is a very old bell, the "Gloriosa". The bell with the most beautiful sound of the world. She rings only a few days in the year and then every bell in Erfurt have to be quiet. Martin Luther had heard the bell ... The christmas market in Erfurt is in the top 3 of europe, you should really go there. ;) And there is a joke about the cathedral and the church on the hill. People always ask, why are there 2 of them so close to each other on the hill. And the people in Erfurt answer, because there is no place left for a third. ;)

Not sure if you have visited Einbeck. It has beautiful medieval buildings. Center of town is gorgeous and very colourful. Also has part of a roman wall and tower left. Was spared during the ww.

That Church looks different to other Churches, becaus it is a "Hallenkirche" hall church in englich i think. They do not have the typical elevated central nave like the ones with a crosslike floorplan which are called Basilika. If you liked the Erfurt cathedrals on top of the hill, i highly recommend you to visit Limburg an der Lahn. A small mediaval town with germanies most beautifull cathedral on top a cliff above the river Lahn. And its only a 1,5 hours drive ;)

I have been following your postings for almost a year now and really like them. I love Germany and the German people. You are living my fantasy of living there. Over the past few years I have made an annual visit and meet up with a German couple who I have become very close friends with. We usually do a several day hike through different sections of Germany. Last year we did a hike through Thuringia and Saxony along the Saale and Unstrutt Rivers. Prior meeting them I stayed in Eisenach for a couple days and whie there did a day trip th Erfurt. I really loved the city and loved seeing some of it again. I visited about the same time last year that you visited this year. My weather was better and they were setting up the fair that was going on when you were there. I did a brief visit to the monatery, just checking into the church. However, I did get to visit the synagogue which was fascinating (there is a charge there too). I also visited the art museum which was very interesting as well as the fortress which gave some great views of the city. I would also recommend Eisenach. This has the distinction of being J S Bach's birthplace and they have an excellent museum devoted to Bach. However, the big site is the Wartburg which is a fortress that overlooks the city. This is where Luther stayed in hiding after the Diet of Worms and was where he did his translation of the Bible into German. In addition to the historical interest the views over the Thuringian countryside is speactacular. I have couple other recommendations for you. One is Bamberg. This is really a jewel of a city. Wurzburg is great particularly for the bishop's palace. Naumburg is also a favorite of mine. This is in the east and the old town is very well preserved and the cathedral ist am tollestan. Weimar is also well worth a visit. Sorry for the long comment but I really do enjoy watcheing you and your observations are really spot on. Although I do not live in Germany when I visit since I usually do so with my friends and stay with them I feel that I am seeing more that just the tourist Germany. Keep on posting. :)

Somewhat rainy day to explore Erfurt, but I liked the video notwithstanding because of the location: Erfurt is the city my father has grown up but since there are no family members left in Erfurt I visited it only twice so far. Some hints: Erfurt was also named "Blumenstadt" (city of flowers) - before WW II it had a very big share in the market for flower seeds throughout Germany (after the division only in East Germany, needless to say), so it should still be a big recommendation in spring and summer. Erfurt does have a famous Christmas market also. It's planned to take place from 2020-11-24 to 2020-12-22 (even if it is to be expected Corona measures will impair the experience a little bit this year) for the 170. time - so it's also one of the very few really traditional Christmas markets (most others did not start before the 1960s). After WW II Thuringia was in fact occupied by US Troops, but since they liked to have a share in the capital of Berlin, they bartered Thuringia in exchange for West Berlin. (Prior to that however they moved the prisoners of war they made in Thuringia to the prisoner-of-war camps at the Rhine (search for: Rheinwiesenlager) to avoid to have to transfer them in Russian custody.) So Thuringia became part of former GDR.

Köln and Düsseldorf are a must to. Duisburg has it's charm too. Zons in Dormagen it's magical. But you'll need more than a weekend to see all of those places. Düsseldorf has the Schloß benrath with it's gardens an interesting story and awsome inside. If you need a guide i'm here . 🙋‍♀️

Love your views, insights and comments on the places that you visit! Plus, I come in peace! Might be interesting to know that "Bad" ("bath" in English, not "bad" ;)) is not just a part of a name but a rating for spa towns that is given (and taken) by the government. Thus, any "Bad" will have something special like water or air treatments, plus it will show provisions for (spa) tourists. Uninteresting mainly for young people... Concerning that single bomb, in WWII, the plane crews used to get rid of excess bombs on their flights home to England, so this one may have been dropped after attacking Dresden or Leipzig.

Maybe next time you are in Thuringia, go to the south, where river Saale makes a long curve to the west till its flows tp the north. There the three small towns of Bad Blankenburg, Rudolstadt and Saalfeld are located. In Bad Blankenburg the kindergarten was invented by Friedrich Fröbel and there is one of the biggest castle grounds from the middle ages. In Rudolstadt is a mighty and beautiful barroque castle named Heidecksburg, the odelst open air museum in Germany (Thüringer Bauernhäuser) and the house where Schiller lived during his yearlong stay in Rudolstadt. Here he also met Goethe for the first time. There are two big festivals in Rudolstadt: The Rudolstadtfestival, a music festival, where you can hear music from all over the world, and the Rudolstädter Vogelschießen, a very big fair. Saalfeld has one of the best preserved late medieval inner towns with gorgeous town gates. There are beautiful buildings from each architectural epoch since the romanesque. There are also the famous Feengrotten, a former alum mine, where many beautiful and colourful dripping stones could grow, after the mine was closed. On mountain Kulmberg is an observation tower, from which you can see the beautiful valley of river Saale and all the tree towns at once. When you are there you can als make a trip to the lovely valley Schwarzatal and up to the Berg- and Schieferstadt Lehesten im Thüringer Wald with its enormous slade mines.

To anyone interested in agricultural history: There's also another open air museum near Erfurt (Freilichtmuseum Hohenfelden). I've actually given some old farm stuff to them from my 300 year old farm. And I think we gave our old threshing machine to the museum in Rudolstadt, but I'm not so sure about that because I was a child back then.

If you're there. Don't miss Löbau and of course Görlitz. One of the few cities that didn't face any destruction in WW2. Lausitz in general is a very beautifull area. It works well with a one week holiday trip together with Leipzig, Dresden and Meißen. And don't forget to visit Eisenach and Wartburg ;)

I don’t think anyone has recommended it yet, but you should visit Aachen. It has a beautiful “Altstadt” with a cathedral that was started to be built around the year 800 by Charlemagne. It’s also at the border to the Netherlands and Belgium and there’s the “Dreiländereck” where you can be in the three countries at once. Aachen also has a beautiful Christmas Market!

I visited Erfurt this summer. It was interesting, but I liked Weimar even more! And it's just the next town over. I'd love your take on Pullman City, Passau. It's a "Wild West" park, one of several in Germany, but perhaps one of the few open because of the pandemic. It's, well, an experience. Probably no stranger than Americans who take part in medieval festivals, but I find myself at a loss for words about this place.

The next time you drive on the A5 between Gießen and the Hattenbacher Dreieck, you should visit Alsfeld and it‘s beautiful old town. It‘s an almost forgotten gem in the north of the Vogelsberg, a giant former volcano at the center of Hesse. It‘s almost forgotten, because when Germany was still divided into East- and West-Germany, the mentioned part of the A5 was some of the smaller Autobahns which wasn’t that frequented back in those days. But since the reunion of Germany, the A5 was reconstructed to one of the more important East-West connections. But also now it‘s more like a transit route and still „nobody“ stops in Alsfeld if they don‘t need to. And for the Christmas Markets I recommend Marburg which has a strong connection to the Wartburg in Eisenach because of Elisabeth from Thuringa. In Marburg there is also the oldest University in Hesse. And they habe a very beautiful old town beneath the old castle and above the river Lahn.

You often mention the former East and West Germanies in your videos, but have you ever been to any part of what formed the actual Inner German Border between the two? Apparently there are a number of place where sections of the old walls and fences, and subsequent watchtowers are still standing. There are also Information Centres at some of these locations telling the story of the 40 history of the Divide between the two. They're on my bucket list for a future trip to Germany.

Did you know that despite the distance Erfurt was a part of Mainz till the French Revolution? Unfortunately you missed to show the Synagogue and its treasure in Erfurt and the beautiful Asian parks in Bad Langensalza. Next time :-) By the way, the chances to find a orchestra probing in a church in Thuringia are quit high, since Thuringia once was the country wich had the highest density of symphonic orchestras in the world and not all were dissolved after reunification.

This thing with the music happened to me too when I visited the beautiful Canterbury Cathedral (in England). Whilst I visited, somebody practised at the organ and it was really amazing. Besides that: It's definitely a place worth visiting and far less crowded than the tourist hotspots in London.

(Geschichte / Terra X) , you will learn a lot about Germany from the past 2000 years plus some specific videos about Martin Luther (who apparently was an antisemite), a video about how the famous german virtues developed (Friedrich Preußen etc)....something he was missing out on in his Freemason video though was that his home town has the most obvious geometric features to be founded by a Freemason (I don't think that video is up any longer for some reason).

It's a beautiful city with great museums and really nice parks - so come when it's nice out! And since you're into church history, of course you *need* to make a stop at the Wartburg of course!

That town was right behind the border, and the Wartburg there is a historical Martin Luther place, as he hid there, and it is connected to the car "Wartburg", too, of course. In the area, you can also find the biggest beech forest in Germany. We went to the Baumwipfelpfad there, that was really amazing!

This is great guys. I had mentioned before about how much I love church history and then you had mentioned how much Aubrey loves church history as well. I love this, I have been through Efurt but I could not spend much time there due to time constraints. I will surely make Efurt a must for my future plans of when I could stay longer. That would be very cool to stay in the very monastery that Luther lived/worked. I also love to visit small towns and would surely like to visit Bad Langensalza. Erfurt is my hometown, living in Norway now. So it was nice seeing a glimpse from home :) The Christmas market in Erfurt is really nice and I also used to go to a medieval christmas market at Burg Ronneburg as well and loved it. Its not gonna happen this year though :( But there is so many nice Christmas markets everywhere in Germany. Erfurt, Dresden, Frankfurt/Main, Nürnberg and Köln are probably my favorites out of the ones that I have been to.

Wow, my hometown on your travel list. Nice. But a bit short about it. Next time try to find out more about it. It is small but packed with a lot of culture, history and fun stuff. So you went to Bad Langensalza and only go to the centre? Oops Well, if you like flowers and parks you are at the right place. Bad Langensalza has a lot of parks (roses, ZenGarden, Baumherbar (don't know the englisch translation) and so on). AND it is one of the doors to the Hainich Nationalpark. The oldest and biggest european hornbeam forest in world. I am sorry but you missed a lot of interesting and beautiful things there.

I have stayed in the cloister in Erfurt in and with a seminar that we brought to the retreat house. It was a great experience - but that was not only due to the old cloister. Having a concrete reason to stay there intensifies your experience enormously. So if you do stay there, do it in the framework of some seminar with a purpose, maybe one of their in-house seminars - or bring your own seminar and book it in. They do have a house seminar program, although COVID has caused them to adapt to circumstances. They themselves tend to do more leadership training (instead of religious training); here is as close as they get to the monastic past, from what I can tell: teambenedikt.de/?page_id=213 To Langensalza I have to add (as an expat in greater Hannover): This was the place, where the Kingdom of Hannover lost its sovereignty AND its low German language! So for Hannoverians, it was an important place (even if about 99.9% of present-day Hannoverians have NO CLUE regarding that fact). "In 1866 it was again the site of a battle between Prussia and Hanover during the Austro-Prussian War.

Never been to Erfurt but visited Eisenach and the Wartburg, where Martin Luther translated the New Testament in.. 11 weeks I think? And where he supposedly saw the devil. Also a really cool place to visit if you're interested in this topic. :) And if you ever come to the north you could check out Schwerin and the Schweriner Schloss and Schlossgarten or Rostock and Warnemünde right at the Baltic Sea. :) Nice video as always guys and loved the collab with Deana & Phil

I visited Ehrfurt a few years ago. Beautiful city. Germans are very good at reconstructing all the medieval buildings that were destroyed during WW2. I can recommend the beautiful medieval city of Quedlinburg. See Wikipedia to read how special this city is. The big cathedral in Ehrfurt could have been a Catholic Church that has been converted then to a Protestant one. I think that because the altar was beautifully decorated with a lot of gold.

Can you imagine how expensive it is to preserve all that half-timbered houses? They are protected by law and if you want to update them you need to do a proper restauration and involve the authorities to get your planes approved. On the other hands we are quit proud on our old cities, today more than 50 years ago, when a lot of thouse housed were destroyed. It is not only the USAF and RAF to blame for ugly city centers like Hannover and Stuttgart.

Nice video! It's a shame, the weather situation didn't work out. To add a little bit of history for you: Thuringia was originally liberated by US forces at the end of WW2, so it was planned to become a part of the American sector. But after growing differences between western powers and the Soviets, they had to trade the whole state of Thuringia for half of the German capital Berlin. Soviet forces liberated the capital and the surrounding state of Brandenburg almost at the same time and refused to share parts of the city with their western Allies afterwards. At first, Stalin wasn't in favor of this deal. But American forces also liberated the North-Thuringian town of Nordhausen, with it's nearby concentration camp. This camp was attached to an underground factory, where the fabrication of the rocket A4 (V2) took place. US forces took all major scientists and the remaining rockets, shipped them to the USA and started their rocket programm, which would lead to the beginning of the space race and finally the moon. Soviets wanted to get access to this technology too, so they agreed to this deal. Soviets took the second class scientists and leading workers, all of the scrap material and spare parts and started their own rocket programm.
