Dragons' Den

2 жыл бұрын

Next into the Den is Maxim Gelmann, an eco-friendly entrepreneur who is looking for £40,000 in exchange for a 5% equity stake in 'Stroodles', but Maxim will have to suck up the feedback on his innovative straw alternative.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Having businesses make products and calling them 'sustainable' simply because they're not plastic is an environmental issue in itself. The fact that this guy has the balls to make the spiel on plastic and not look into the full supply chain of his 'sustainable' product is mental. Green wash. Fair play to Deborah for properly calling him out.

Pasta straws are better for the environment than plastic. They are better to use than paper straws (they don’t get soggy). That’s it. I can say with 100% confidence, if he truly cared about the environmental impacts of his product he would have had answers to Deborah's questions and more, he would have led with them. I invented a 15mm copper pipe straw . It's great . When you've finished you can either weigh it in for recycling or keep it for repairs if you have a burst pipe at home in winter . . Winner , winner chicken dinner .

Do you both drink water with straws? Psychopaths! And secondly, you can make a product but not like to use it yourself.

@@athanasiosp. I do not generally drink water with a straw, no, however he was pitching a product to replace straws but he was not using his own product to drink with. Consciously or subconsciously that is going to communicate to the Dragons a lack of faith in his own product.
@athanasiosp.
@athanasiosp. 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrgrimm98 1) I can name a million products and scenarios where someone creates something but literally does not use it. 2) Even if the straws COULD be used to drink his water this makes no sense. Most people in the world do not drink water with a straw, especially with a glass like that, and if you do not use your product, even if you could do it like the straws here, does not pass any negative non-faithful in the idea messages to the dragons. Yeah I make gin with a flavor and I give you some shots to try it while I am drinking water, does that mean that I do not like my gin enough and trust it to succeed and this is then seen and felt by the dragons? Of course not. btw this example is an actual episode
@mrgrimm98
@mrgrimm98 2 жыл бұрын
@@athanasiosp. Re Point 1) I get and fully accept that there are many people out there who do not use their own products, however, if my first thought (and from the sound of it @HummDrumm as well) when seeing him drink the water during his pitch for the straws was "Why is he not using one of his own straws?" then we are not going to be the only 2 people who thought that and Re Point 2) your Gin example is a (no pun intended) strawman argument at best as it would be seen as unprofessional to drink alcohol whilst giving a pitch and as such is a completely different scenario to which you could not compare this one.

1. He should’ve used his “pasta la vista” line in the den (maybe he did and it was edited out). 2. As Deborah said, he needed to check the supply chain for his product, even if that increased costs. 3. Retailers would have just passed on the cost to their consumer. People would just pay even an extra 10p without thought. 4. If you can convince high end cafes/restaurants that paper straws are an inferior product, they would’ve adopted this especially closer to the deadline, out of simplicity.
