I wish you did more work with color pencils (in color). Then i would be a patreon member. I know that Bonnie Snowden is excellent with color pencils, but i have nothing with dogs, cats and horses. I like to color wildlife.

Working dark to light. And blending bit by bit...you have the most interesting vids! You have wonderful reference photos too. Besides pastelmat, is there a less expensive choice for non-professionals? Something toothy and archival?(I don't care for the lightweight papers cuz i can't layer much on them.)

in all honesty only pastelmat acts like pastelmat. I do have a video to make your own SIMILAR version with pastel grounds, but its not as good - nothing is

Nothing is like pastelmat. Most others either have to much tooth or too Little tooth.

This is very helpful. I have a question: If you press too hard with the stump, it is possible to flatten the paper so you lose the tooth? If I am understanding correctly, you are applying layers using light pressure followed by "LIGHT" blending with the stump. (?) I agree that there is nothing at all like Pastelmat. Whether you are a professional or drawing for your own pleasure, it is worth the extra cost. Nothing comes close to it for layering. :)

You dont need to press hard. Only lightly. If you press to hard then yes you will lose some tooth.

Hi Sheila, only light pressure is required, but in the past I have used a soft paper stump and pushed real hard, it did not affect the paper. Some stumps are very hard, almost like wood and you can even press them hard and the paper is hardly affected, but there is never a need to press anywhere near that hardness, ever :o)
