Here is a list of Caran d ache rich pastel pencils colours I usually use: numbers...
Primary colours...
Reds... 788-060, 080
Yellows... 788- 240, 530, 035
Blue... 788- 145
Orange 788-052
Purple 788-099
Green 788-719
Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as some of the lightfastness is poor. so I use Conti a Paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it I would recommend buying the sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

Dear Dave, i enjoy your videos so much. I have question about pastelmat paper. If you have only assorted colour of pastelmat and going to draw skin, would you make a layer of Gray as a basic layer and then work on it as with your system. thank you . Eva
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt Жыл бұрын
Hi Eva, I would try mixing white and ivory black acrylic to make a grey and try that, as a think wash so not to loose the tooth of the paper.. I haven't personally done this, but I have seen other artist use acrylic. If you are thinking of using pastels, be care not to lose the tooth of the paper. Search on KZbin to see what videos from other artists that explain how to apply the tone. All the very best

Gosh, you make it look so easy, but I know it’s many hours of practice as well as natural talent. Fantastic! Can you tell me, are the any rules about forming a false background to a subject? e.g. darker next to the subject, lighter further away or vice versa. Complementary colour to the subject?
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt Жыл бұрын
Hi, It all comes easier with practice... it has took about 7 hours at the easel at this stage. Backgrounds are a personal thing, I sometimes add an image that has a relationship to the subject, or a colour that brings out the colour of the skin tones... like a complementary colour. dark against light, light against dark. With this one I will just leave the background as the colour of the pastelmat, as my sister like arty loose portraits... so the clothes will be blended and misted off. All the best. 🙏😊

Just curious. Can you use the same technique just using coloured pencils like prisma colour. Thank you. Just joined your Patreon page and can’t wait to follow your instruction.
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt Жыл бұрын
Hi Jan, you can use the same principle because you can layer using coloured pencils and they work well on pastel matt, perhaps light grey might work better. Not sure if you could put white over dark as clean as pastel... not had much experience with coloured pencils tbh. I use the same colour combinations in watercolour and in oils. It is just a difference approach as pastels are more looser and flow more than coloured pencils. Welcome to the Patreon community, I see you joined the Oil painting Tier. Thank you. 😊🙏

Hi there, I prefer to use pencils to start the portrait and build up texture as I draw. I like the carbOthello pencils for the under drawing as they are chalky and move around easy. 🙏
